Did Antebellum Illinois Free Banks Take Undue Risk With Their Bond Portfolios?: An Analysis Of Decision-Making Prior To The Civil War, Scott N. Clayman
Business and Economics Honors Papers
Free banks in Illinois could issue bank notes backed by state or U.S. bond collateral. A decline in bond prices as the Civil War approached resulted in banks being unable to redeem their noteholders in gold specie and subsequently resulted in bank failures. Previously economic historians believed that failures of free banks were due to wildcat banking rather than the portfolio allocation of free banks. Over time, other researchers have found that banks that took greater ex ante risk prior to the failure were more likely to fail. There were other price declines during the 1850s, in particular the Panic …

Treasury Inflation Protected Securities, or TIPS, offer investors a lower coupon rate; however, in exchange, investors receive protection against the negative impact of inflation. Higher inflation leads to a loss in purchasing power, as well as higher interest rates, which reduce bond prices. The inflation protection offered by TIPS offsets these impacts by increasing the face value (called the accrued principal) in line with inflation, meaning that periodic coupon payments rise with inflation, as does the return of principal at maturity. See this Bloomberg article for a discussion of why TIPS are back in favor.
An Assessment Of Affirmative Action In Business, 2015 University of Connecticut - Storrs
An Assessment Of Affirmative Action In Business, Jordan A. Kennedy
Honors Scholar Theses
Affirmative action has become an inevitable aspect of the employment hiring process. It has been put into place to assist in eradicating the institutionalized discrimination that inherently exists in such practices. On the surface, affirmative action may appear to be something that is beneficial to both the hiring institution and the individual; it seems to be a win-win situation because the business is creating a more diverse workplace and the individual is getting a job that they desired. However, the way that affirmative action is practiced may prevent its overall effectiveness. For example, there are several fundamental flaws with this …

Many professional athletes across a wide variety of sport have obtained celebrity status and as a result, have become human brands much greater than themselves (Carlson and Donavan, 2013). Previous research analyzed specific cases, individual strategies, and consumer behaviors. However, this study has furthered new knowledge by obtaining a comprehensive description of the differing approaches set in place by the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League with regard to branding of individual athletes on Twitter. The purpose of this study was to determine in which ways do different sport leagues contrast in how they brand athletes on Twitter. …

The Affect Of Utilizing Social Media Marketing In The Publishing Industry, Lauren V. Kretzschmar
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
In the publishing industry, marketers have found it difficult in the past to market directly to consumers, so they were mainly focused on marketing to other businesses and retailers. Recently, there has been a shift in the way publishers market, and they are now utilizing social media to market directly to potential customers. Implementing social media marketing allows publishers to establish a relationship with their readers. It also provides a platform for companies to promote content marketing, and for readers to converse and share testimonials about the books. Delivering content marketing is becoming an essential part of marketing in the …

The Left Bank Brasseries: The Evolution Of A French-Inspired Restaurant, John A. Sansone
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Due to the high failure rates of restaurants in the United States, many studies have come up with various reasons to explain the underlying causes of such a phenomenon. One key study by Parsa (2005) suggests, “Restaurant failures have been attributed to economic and social factors […]” and “Restaurant failures can be studied from economic, marketing, and managerial perspectives.” In particular, lack of capital is a major contributing factor for restaurants failure and researchers agree that a restaurant without a sufficient amount of capital will not survive because of three major expenses: overhead, labor, and food cost. Today’s service industry …

What Does It Take? Deciphering Performance Indicators Of Nfl Running Backs Through The Examination Of Collegiate Performance And Nfl Combine Results, Colin W. Weaver, Kevin L. Hindenach, Zach A. Vos, Antonio De Moss Jr.
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
This research uses a linear regression model to investigate the relationship between prospective NFL running backs’ NCAA FBS football statistics, NFL Combine measureables, and realized performance in the NFL as evaluated by Pro Football Focus. We observe 435 player-seasons from 2007-2014. The model suggests that collegiate conference affiliation, collegiate touchdowns, and NFL team passing strength are positively associated with NFL running back performance at statistically significant levels. Conference affiliation has the most substantial effect. NFL talent evaluators must appreciate that context is king when evaluating potential, and that pure stats are only a small piece of the puzzle.

Analytic Versus Non-Analytic Decision Makers And Their Effect On Win Percentage After In-Season Player Acquisitions, Kenneth Adam Siemers, Xin Gao Mr., Tyler Armijo, Brandon Lovette
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
This paper examines whether teams with winning records that employ analytic decision makers see a higher increase in win percentage after in-season player acquisitions versus teams that employ non-analytic decision makers. This was accomplished through analyzing the in-season player acquisition data from the MLB and NBA over the last four completed seasons through descriptive and inferential statistics. There was not a significant difference between the two groups in average win percentage after total acquisitions, trades, or signings. Using inferential tests we found no statistical significance between the type of decision maker, and the difference in win percentage after an acquisition.

Injury in college athletics are a very common occurrence, and can affect the participants very severely. Football has been one such sport that has shown a lot of public health concerns at the elite levels. With this being said research has lacked at the lower levels of collegiate football, even though this is where the vast majority of NCAA football players participate. Many scholarly sources have either focused on the elite levels of football or the youth levels, no research had been specifically done on the Division III level of football in regards to injury. Ultimately this paper hoped to …

Incorporating Google Glass With Emergency Medical Services, Davis Cho
Honors Capstone Projects - All
Technology's integration into the Emergency Medical Field has been lifesaving. Quicker response time, treatment, and transport to the hospital have been possible through the help of new technology. Telemedicine is not new, but the way it is communicated is evolving. What is unique about using Google Glass for EMS is it would not restrict the user's mobility or function, which is incredibly important for First Responders who might need two hands to do compressions for CPR. My Capstone Project will give First Responders, such as Paramedics and EMTs, an extra set of hands through utilizing Google Glass.

Residential Property Values And Historic Districts: A Kalamazoo Case Study, Curtis John Aardema
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
Often cited by proponents as a productive tool for preserving the cultural and physical elements of the American built environment, historic districts are alternatively branded as burdensome and regressive to future development by critics. In order to provide a quantitative assessment of the economic impact of historic districts, this project compares property values from 1990, 2000 and 2010 in both a historically designated and a non- designated neighborhood in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Through tedious sampling techniques and statistical analysis, the results of the project indicated a link between historic districts and higher property values.
