Leveraging Railroad Land Grants And The Benefits Accruing In The New Economic Landscape, Brian Gurney, Joshua P. Hill 2019 Montana State University Billings

Leveraging Railroad Land Grants And The Benefits Accruing In The New Economic Landscape, Brian Gurney, Joshua P. Hill

Journal of Transportation Management

Unlike most companies, the major railroads in the United States have proven highly resilient to the vicissi- tudes of the market. We argue that this is due neither to the unique nature of rail haulage nor to superior management acumen. Rather this solidity is due to an immense wealth transfer to the railroads in the nine- teenth century that has dramatic impacts in the present. Moreover, the government protection and encouragement that rail grants represent did not end in the nineteenth century. It continues and represents an intangible asset that, while not on railroads’ balance sheet, is very real indeed.

U.S. Federal Regulations And Motor Carrier Profitability, Ahren Johnston

Journal of Transportation Management

This study explores the impact of recent federal regulations, such as Comprehensive Safety Analysis (CSA) 2010, Hours of Service Changes, Environmental Regulations, and electronic logbooks on motor carrier profitability. Quarterly data from 2004–2015 from U.S. publicly traded motor carriers isused to estimate the temporal trends on various financial ratios after controlling for general economic and carrier specific characteristics. Results of the analysis reveal that motor carrier profitability was declining between 2004 and 2009 but has been improving since that time.

An Exploratory Study Of Airline Passenger Technology Use: A Customer Experience Perspective, Steven Leon

Journal of Transportation Management

Airline passengers have many choices and preferences in the way they interact with airlines. This creates numerous challenges for airlines. This research examines technology preferences by Millennials when interacting with airlines. Seven common airline interaction scenarios were evaluated using repeated measures Analysis of Variance with data collected from an online survey. The results show that Millennial generation airline passengers vary their preferences for technology when interacting with airlines. One intriguing finding of this study is that using mobile devices does not rank high as one of their preferred choices.

Keep 'Em Fighting: Chris-Craft's Contribution To Wwii, Geoffrey D. Reynolds 2019 Hope College

Keep 'Em Fighting: Chris-Craft's Contribution To Wwii, Geoffrey D. Reynolds

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces clamored over the sides of large troop ships into 4126 landing craft, many of those LCVPs (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel), and prepared to storm several beaches of northern France in Operation Overlord, better known as D-Day. Preparation for this day started in the early 1942 as companies throughout the United States converted their factories from peacetime to wartime production. In Michigan, all three Chris-Craft Corporation plants quickly converted from pleasure boat building to building boats for the war effort full time. Together, the three plants would become part of the America’s arsenal of democracy …

Modeling Newsvendor Behavior: A Prospect Theory Approach, Bhavani Shanker UPPARI, Sameer HASIJA 2019 Singapore Management University

Modeling Newsvendor Behavior: A Prospect Theory Approach, Bhavani Shanker Uppari, Sameer Hasija

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Problem definition: Studies have shown that the behavior of subjects in newsvendor experiments is not consistent with expected profit maximization - an assumption that is often made in operations management literature. Although prospect theory has been established as a popular model of behavioral decision making under uncertainty, it was considered to be inconsistent with observed newsvendor behavior (in particular, the pull-to-center effect) until a recent study proposed a prospect theory model that is consistent with the pull-to-center effect; however, this model's ability in representing newsvendor behavior compared to other plausible prospect theory models is unexplored in the literature. This paper …

A Meticulous Food Safety Plan Today Avoids Handcuffs Tomorrow, Kim Bousquet 2019 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

A Meticulous Food Safety Plan Today Avoids Handcuffs Tomorrow, Kim Bousquet

Journal of Food Law & Policy

In August 2010, thousands of people across the United States were poisoned by eating eggs unknowingly tainted with Salmonella enteritidis bacteria. Following a lengthy investigation, the owners of the facility where the outbreak began were sentenced to three months in prison. This is not a one-off case; poor food safety practices are responsible for several outbreaks and often end in incarceration. Filthy hen houses, diseased fruit storage, and negligent food processing may be the last thing we want to imagine, but these practices have much to teach today's food producers. This article first examines how poor food production practices can …

The Role Of Prior Sales Experience Of Buyers And Duration In Buyer-Seller Relationships, Scott C. Ambrose, Nwamaka A. Anaza, Brian N. Rutherford 2019 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

The Role Of Prior Sales Experience Of Buyers And Duration In Buyer-Seller Relationships, Scott C. Ambrose, Nwamaka A. Anaza, Brian N. Rutherford

Scott C. Ambrose

This paper examines the impact that a buyer’s prior sales experience and the duration of the buyer-salesperson relationship has on the satisfaction and commitment linkages established within the literature. First, two key facets of satisfaction (social and economic) are linked to buyer’s commitment to the salesperson. Next, buyer-salesperson relationship duration is examined as an influencer between the satisfaction and commitment linkages. Following this, the study shifts its focus to examine if and how buyers with prior sales experience view the buyer-salesperson relationship different than buyers without prior sales experience. Findings of the study highlight the importance of developing our understanding …

Strategic Location And Dispatch Management Of Assets In A Military Medical Evacuation Enterprise, Phillip R. Jenkins 2019 Air Force Institute of Technology

Strategic Location And Dispatch Management Of Assets In A Military Medical Evacuation Enterprise, Phillip R. Jenkins

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation considers the importance of optimizing deployed military medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) systems and utilizes operations research techniques to develop models that allow military medical planners to analyze different strategies regarding the management of MEDEVAC assets in a deployed environment. For optimization models relating to selected subproblems of the MEDEVAC enterprise, the work herein leverages integer programming, multi-objective optimization, Markov decision processes, approximate dynamic programming, and machine learning, as appropriate, to identify relevant insights for aerial MEDEVAC operations.

Trends In The Study Of Indirect Procurement, Daniel Israel 2019 Western Michigan University

Trends In The Study Of Indirect Procurement, Daniel Israel

Honors Theses

Indirect procurement has largely been ignored in scholarly research due to only representing a small portion of a firm’s expenditures, and suffers from a confusing nomenclature that makes drawing conclusions difficult. However, indirect procurement is a diverse and crucial component of purchasing that allows for sustainable competitive advantages and reduced costs, if managed properly. By performing a keyword search in the ABI/INFORM database, we analyzed, consolidated, and summarized the current areas of research as it pertains to indirect procurement. We also identified suggested further areas of research, as educated by our previous analysis. We find that the majority of the …

Impact Of Supply Chain Design On The Relationships Between Strategy Type, Firm Performance, And Supply Chain Outcomes, Kyle Pudenz

College of Business Theses and Dissertations

While the impacts of corporate strategy and supply chain design on firm performance have been independently studied, the role of supply chain design as an integrated element of corporate strategy is not well understood. This study aims to understand whether alignment between an organization’s strategy type and supply chain design positively impacts financial performance and supply chain outcomes. The study design involved a quantitative survey of 95 management professionals knowledgeable about their corporate strategy, supply chain design, and firm performance. Firm performance was measured in financial terms of perceived profitability and market share gains as well as through use of …

Port Supply Network Strategies: An Erbv Perspective, Nikolaos Valantasis Kanellos, Nigel Caldwell 2019 Technological University Dublin

Port Supply Network Strategies: An Erbv Perspective, Nikolaos Valantasis Kanellos, Nigel Caldwell

Conference Papers

Increasingly supply networks are recognised as the most meaningful level of analysis in many industries. Yet few studies examine the additional capabilities and revenue options generated by such alliancing. ERBV is one perspective that addresses how these alliancing related opportunities can create competitive advantage. The ERBV perspective and notion of relational rents is used empirically to understand three distinct port supply network strategies. Whilst this study is confirmatory regarding the basic tents of ERBV, beyond studying ERBV in a new context the study contributes to theory by reporting that, paradoxically, temporary relational rents can be generated without close partnerships.

Re-Examining The Unified Theory Of Acceptance And Use Of Technology (Utaut): Towards A Revised Theoretical Model, Anand Jeyaraj, Yogesh K. Dwivedi, Nripendra P. Rana, Marc Clement, Michael D. Williams 2019 Wright State University - Main Campus

Re-Examining The Unified Theory Of Acceptance And Use Of Technology (Utaut): Towards A Revised Theoretical Model, Anand Jeyaraj, Yogesh K. Dwivedi, Nripendra P. Rana, Marc Clement, Michael D. Williams

ISSCM Faculty Publications

Based on a critical review of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study first formalized an alternative theoretical model for explaining the acceptance and use of information system (IS) and information technology (IT) innovations. The revised theoretical model was then empirically examined using a combination of meta-analysis and structural equation modelling (MASEM) techniques. The meta-analysis was based on 1600 observations on 21 relationships coded from 162 prior studies on IS/IT acceptance and use. The SEM analysis showed that attitude: was central to behavioural intentions and usage behaviours, partially mediated the effects of exogenous constructs on …

Global Value Chains And The Cptpp, Pao-Li CHANG, Tran Bao Phuong NGUYEN 2019 Singapore Management University

Global Value Chains And The Cptpp, Pao-Li Chang, Tran Bao Phuong Nguyen

SMU Economics and Statistics Working Paper Series

The CPTPP, or the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, is an example of a “mega-regional” free trade agreement, whose provisions on the rules of origin and trade facilitation can have potentially large impacts on the CPTPP-wide supply chains. In this paper, we investigate whether the CPTPP members are key upstream and downstream trade partners to each other in the global value chains. We develop formulas of bilateral upstreamness and downstreamness, based on the gross-export decomposition framework of Koopman, Wang and Wei (2014) and Borin and Mancini (2017). We demonstrate how the decomposition of gross exports can be used …

Executive Leadership Challenges In Today’S Environment, Herbert J. DeGraffe Jr. 2019 Walden University

Executive Leadership Challenges In Today’S Environment, Herbert J. Degraffe Jr.

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Abstract

Individuals in top management positions often have conflicting interpretations concerning the authoritative qualities that align with the intrinsic and external relations of an organization. Although, researchers may still debate about the extent to which athletic development personality factors are important internal components of an individual. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if athletic development personality factors correlate with decision making at the executive leadership level. The research questions focused on determining if there was a relationship between athletic development personality factors and decision making. Social exchange theory, social representations theory, and leadership theories comprised the theoretical …
