Recently, China has announced plans for reciprocal tariffs on $50 billions of 106 products that imported from the United States as the second response to President Donald Trump’s increasing tariffs on Chinese exports. Only in a few months, the two influential countries have consecutively announced punishment policies on each other’s exports in order to protect their advantages. The economic war between the two most powerful economies have great impact not only on currencies of themselves but also on those of other countries. After each policy was announced, different countries have their currencies fluctuated differently. The change in exchange rate is …

Previous research supports what employees intuitively sense: peers make the place (Chiaburu & Harrison, 2008; Schneider, 1987). Extant research suggests coworker relationships have critical influence on outcomes ranging from turnover (Felps, Mitchell, Hekman, Lee, Holtom, & Harman, 2009) to creativity (Homan, Buengeler, Eckhoff, van Ginkel, & Voelpel, 2015) to organizational commitment (Viswesvaran & Ones, 2002) to employee health and well-being (Heaphy & Dutton, 2008). Despite the increase of Intercultural COworker Relationships (ICORs), particularly in multinational firms in the technology industry, research has yet to examine what defines coworker relationship quality in the presence of national cultural differences. In other words, …

Negotiating Development: Valuation Of A Guesthouse Project In Southern Guinea-Bissau1, Brandon D. Lundy
Brandon D. Lundy
This paper provides a case study illustrating the crossroads between the agendas of international/national economic development with that of the development objectives of local communities. It shows how a community development project connects villagers to the larger world – both practically and imaginatively. This study takes a single case, the process of developing a guesthouse building project among the Nalú of southern Guinea-Bissau, to illustrate how a local attempt to connect to the outside world is intersected by community relations, NGOs, and development discourse. Through a community study using ethnographic methodology including participant observation, interviews, and focus groups, the village …

How Do Financial Institutions In China Mitigate Risks In Securitization Markets?, Tiantian Lyu
Honors College Theses
Asset securitization as the essential financial tool has increased the liquidity of underlying assets and promoted rapid economic development. In 2008, the outbreak of Subprime Mortgage Crisis that brought by the collapse of securitization triggered the U.S. securitization market to realize the risks involved in structured financial products, and thus facilitated the development of risk controlling tools. Through the analysis of securitization process, drivers, and credit rating agencies, the study concentrates on the formation of risks and modeling evaluation with evidence in both China and the U.S. markets. Statistical analysis was conducted on Chinese securitized products combining with risk management …

Foreign Direct Investment In Global Cities And Co-Ethnic Clusters: Characteristics, Performance, And Survival, Dwarka Chakravarty
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation examines the characteristics, profitability, and survival of multinational enterprise (MNE) foreign direct investment (FDI) in North American “global” cities (GCs), such as Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto. Across GCs and their metropolitan areas (Metros), MNEs often co-locate with their home country and co-industry peers in “co-ethnic” and “co-ethnic, co-industry” (CECI) clusters. Despite their substantial influence on the world economy GCs are relatively underexplored as location units of analysis in International Business (IB) research. Accordingly, I address three research questions. First, how do subsidiary and MNE characteristics differ between GCs, Metros, and other locations? Second, how does subsidiary …

How Do Emerging Multinationals Configure Political Connections Across Institutional Contexts?, 2018 Singapore Management University
How Do Emerging Multinationals Configure Political Connections Across Institutional Contexts?, Liang Chen, Yi Li, Di Fan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Research Summary: Forming informal ties with political agents is viewed as a viable strategy for multinational enterprises seeking to enter emerging countries. Less is known about the conditions under which political connection is most helpful for firms dealing with cross-border institutional distance. We discuss the distinctive mechanisms through which emerging multinationals may benefit from both home and host political connections. Based on the strategy tripod perspective, we postulate that the importance of different types of connections depends on the overall configurations of a firm's resources and industry characteristics, and these may change with institutional distance. Our analysis of a sample …

Place, Space, And Foreign Direct Investment Into Peripheral Cities, Conor Mcdonald, Peter J. Buckley, Hinrich Voss, Adam R. Cross, Liang Chen
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Perspectives drawn from the economic geography literature are increasingly used to generate insights into locational issues in international business. In this paper, we seek to integrate these literatures further by investigating the locational determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) into peripheral cities within an emerging economy. Peripheral cities in emerging economies are attracting a growing proportion of global FDI flows, but the international business literature lacks a framework for understanding subnational determinants of FDI, particularly into non-core locations. We draw on the core-periphery model to build and test theory on how spatial interdependencies between subnational locations impact on the distribution …
Buying Behaviors Of Generation X Women On Fast Fashion Products: A Mixed Methods Study, 2018 University of Nebraska - Lincoln
Buying Behaviors Of Generation X Women On Fast Fashion Products: A Mixed Methods Study, Yiyue Fan
Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Fast fashion has changed the world’s fashion industry and consumer behavior extensively. Not only has the fast fashion provided “hot” products that capture the latest fashion trends from the catwalk, but has also allowed consumers purchase products with affordable prices (Su et al., 2016). Generation X is an important age group to study since it “bridged pre-digital and digital cultures, liberal and neo-conservative political swings, material abundance and economic hardship, social engagement” and has an important role in bridging baby boomers and the Millennials (Katz, 2017). A lot of literature is available about Millennials consumer buying behavior, but very little …
Corporate Governance & Sustainability Of The Global Value Chain: Bangladesh Ready-Made Garment Industry Post-Rana Plaza Investigation Into Fairness Of Value Appropriation By Global Apparel Brands, Manufacturers And Labour, Yoshiteru Uramoto, Lilac Nachum Prof
Publications and Research
On 24 April 2013 more than 1,100 people died in the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh. TV cameras focused on the victims of this horror – the garment workers, their unsafe and pitifully low incomes. Improvements were promised, by the factory owners, their international buyer customers, Bangladesh Government and civil society groups. This study sought to examine to what extent these promises had been delivered upon. Bangladesh is the world’s second largest exporter of ready-made garments. The industry has played a central role in the country’s economic development and poverty alleviation. It is widely agreed that labor safety …

United States Withdrawal From Nafta: Potential Effects On The Domestic Agriculture Sector And In-Market Consumers, Karen Ospina
Honors College Theses
A United States withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement – a tenant of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign – could significantly reduce job creation and consumer spending in a number of sectors within the U.S. economy. While it remains to be seen whether this proposed exit will occur, economists predict the main industries that will be affected are the automotive, farming, and petrochemical industries. The United States’ current political climate could potentially, negatively impact the farming industry – thus causing the unemployment rate to possibly skyrocket as well as adversely affecting consumer spending. This paper examines the potential …

How Has Nafta Affected The Business Relationship Between The United States And Mexico?, Julia Molinaro
Honors College Theses
This paper researches the effects NAFTA has had on the relationship between Mexico and the United States. It positions the question of why Mexico chose to enter the agreement within a larger historical context, debating the economic and social effects on the country as a whole. This study shows how economic trends have changed prior to and since Mexico joined NAFTA. It elaborates on the specific dynamics of what it means for the two countries to interact with each other on a cultural level, under the framework explained by Geert Hofstede's cultural dimensions. Then, it poses recommendations for ways that …
