Research shows that “empathy” is an important quality in a leader and improves one’s ability to resolve group needs, obtain followers, perform prosocial behaviors, and get positive results. However, many business students do not recognize the value of empathy. Business schools can help improve this by teaching the importance of empathy and giving students the opportunity to develop it.

Why Are Corporations Willing To Take On Public Csr? An Organizational Traits Approach, Yun Liu, Greg G. Wang, Yu Chen
Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
Corporation social responsibility includes the relational responsibility for the contractual stakeholders (relational CSR) and the public responsibility for the whole society (public CSR). In this paper, we examined the effect of organizational virtuousness on a corporation's public CSR behavior and the moderating effect of organizational identity orientation between them. To test our hypothesis, we collected and analyzed a sample from 88 corporations and 742 respondents through questionnaires. Our results show that organizational virtuousness is positively associated with a corporation's public CSR behavior, and this positive effect is moderated by organizational identity orientation. Among them, individualistic and collectivistic identity orientation positively …

Abuses And Penalties Of A Corporate Tax Inversion, James G.S. Yang, Leonard J. Lauricella Professor, Frank J. Aquilino
Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
There is a serious problem in international taxation today. Many United States (U.S.) multinational corporations have moved abroad to take advantage of a lower tax rate in a foreign country. As a consequence, the tax base in the U.S. has been seriously eroded. This practice is known as “corporate tax inversion”. This paper discusses the abuses and penalties of this phenomenon. It is rooted in some deficiencies in the U.S. tax law. This paper points out that the U.S. has the highest corporate tax rate in the world. It imposes tax on worldwide income. Prosocial Rule-Breaking To Help Coworker: Nature, Causes, And Effect On Service Performance, 2019 University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Prosocial Rule-Breaking To Help Coworker: Nature, Causes, And Effect On Service Performance, Cass Shum, Ankita Ghosh, Anthony R. Gatling
Hospitality Faculty Research
We examine the nature, antecedents, and service performance consequence of employees’ prosocial rule-breaking behaviors with a motive to help coworkers (PSBC) in two studies. Using a qualitative exploratory study with a sample of 80 hospitality workers, we showed the prevalence of PSBC in the hospitality industry, which includes four unique forms. Next, we examined the causes and effect of PSBC by drawing on the social cognitive theory. We proposed that coworkers PSBC and employees’ moral courage interactively predict employee PSBC, which has a negative effect on service performance. We tested the hypotheses using a time-lagged survey study with a sample …
The Way Of The Servant Citizen: Building, Mindfulness And Reverence For Work (Bmw): A Thematic Synthesis Of Servant Attributes From Servant Leadership, Organizational Citizenship Behavior And The Servanthood Of Jesus, 2019 University of Santo Tomas
The Way Of The Servant Citizen: Building, Mindfulness And Reverence For Work (Bmw): A Thematic Synthesis Of Servant Attributes From Servant Leadership, Organizational Citizenship Behavior And The Servanthood Of Jesus, Ramon Ma. Nicolas V. Molano
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The servant-first is central in writings on servant leadership and the biblical Jesus on becoming servants. A servant-first on its own volition seeks to serve, and to serve first the welfare of others before their own, and it does not necessarily hold a formal leadership position. The study introduces the term servant citizen to refer to one who is servant-first and an ordinary member of community. The study aimed to provide leaders, educators and trainers with teachable content that aids in the formation of servant citizens ─ more than nominal service-providers ─ from organization members. The study’s starting reference was …

External And Internal Networks And Access To Hrd Resources In Small Professional Service Firms, Ciara Nolan Dr, Thomas Garavan
Articles
A key challenge facing small professional service firms (PSFs) in the context of implementing human resource development (HRD) is access to resources. The use of external and internal networks represents an important means of identifying and acquiring needed resources. We utilize resource dependency and network theories to explore the types of networks used by owner-managers to acquire HRD resources and the types of resources that are acquired. We investigate these issues utilizing three case study organizations located in the Republic of Ireland and interview data from owner-managers and employees. We found that small PSFs derived resources from both coercive and …

Investment In Human Capital And Labor Mobility: Evidence From A Shock To Property Rights, Christopher P. Clifford, William C. Gerken
Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers
We show that the assignment of property rights to client relationships affects employee behavior in the industry for financial advice. Our identification comes from staggered firm-level entry into the Protocol for Broker Recruiting. The protocol effectively transfers the ownership of the client relationship from the firm to the employee. We document that entering into the protocol increases employee labor mobility among member firms. Further, we find that upon protocol inclusion, employees are less likely to generate customer complaints and more likely to invest in their own general human capital, but less likely to invest in firm-specific human capital. We use …

Evaluating Kentucky State Pension Plans In The 2000s And Best Practices Moving Forward, Sarah Alegria
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
The Commonwealth of Kentucky sponsors three different pension retirement systems. This includes Kentucky Employee Retirement System, Teacher’s Retirement System, and Kentucky’s Judicial Form of Retirement System. Kentucky has one of the worst funded pension retirement plans and is currently facing shortfalls of about $43 billion (PEW, 2013). Between 1998-2008, Commonwealth of Kentucky’s legislators made many detrimental policy decisions that negatively affected its Pension Retirement System. The most impacting includes:
- Enhancements of Benefits in the Nineties
- Changing Final Compensation from the average of five-years to the average of three-years
- Mandated Yearly Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA)
- Not requiring the State to …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Equal employment opportunity (EEO) is a key chapter in any human resources management books. Unequal employment treatment is prevalent. In 2018, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission received 554,000 calls and emails concerning potential discrimination claims. Since most students do not have unequal employment experience, it is critical to find some ways to allow students to see how others suffered from unequal employment treatment and think about how to avoid such behaviors. The team project encourages students to find EEO related cases and discuss the implications to the business in a presentation.
