Impacts Of Covid-19 On The U.S. Restaurant Industry From The Global Perspective, Seoki Lee, Hyoungju Song, Michael S. Lin, Amit Sharma
Journal of Hospitality Financial Management
The current study explores the impact of COVID-19 on the U.S. restaurant industry in terms of its stock performance, and further incorporates a global perspective into this examination by testing both the main and moderating effects of non-U.S. COVID-19 and also the moderating effect of the internationalization strategy of the U.S. restaurant industry. Findings of this study confirm that U.S. COVID-19 had a negative influence on U.S. restaurant firms' stock returns while non-U.S. COVID-19 had a positive impact. Further, the non-U.S. COVID-19 had a positive moderating effect on the relationship between U.S. COVID-19 and restaurant firms' stock returns. Unexpectedly, the …
Cost-Benefit Analysis Rules For The Foodservice System, 2021 Pennsylvania State University
Cost-Benefit Analysis Rules For The Foodservice System, Amit Sharma
Journal of Hospitality Financial Management
Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is an established approach to help make informed decisions. The practical technique has been used extensively in several areas of study, and there is a robust literature on numerous aspects of CBA. While the functional characteristics have been well expounded, the incorporation of CBA into varied disciplinary contexts remains scanty. Foodservice systems can be viewed as an extension of the broader food system. Within food system economics literature, a critical gap remains in the study of behavioral decision-making through the lens of microeconomic approaches. CBA provides a theoretical approach to conduct such inquiries. Two rules in the …

This study aims to examine the factors that impact FAFH from a macroeconomic perspective. Macroeconomic and FAFH spending data from January 1997 to February 2020 were obtained from the various databases. The results reveal that the unemployment rate, Consumer Price Index (CPI), stock index, and oil price had a significant negative influence on both nominal and constant FAFH spending percentage, and oil price had a significant positive influence on constant FAFH spending percentage. What Happens Here? Educating Las Vegas’S Guests During Covid-19, Marta Soligo
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
When, in 2003, the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority (LVCVA) launched the tag line “What happens here, stays here,” it reinforced the idea, already supported by the media, that in Sin City everything is allowed. Looking at the COVID-19 crisis, one might wonder how, after being seen for years as a place without restrictions, Las Vegas could convince its tourists to respect some rigid safety guidelines. This paper tries to answer that question starting from the framework of the host-guest relationship, which is widely used in anthropology and sociology of tourism. On the one hand, I state that short-time …

COVID-19 exposes structural inequalities within American society which can no longer be ignored. Here, we highlight the structural inequalities women and women of color face that are glaringly apparent or exacerbated in the pandemic. Inequalities that play a role in the unemployment, insufficient workplace protection, and increased work-life demands of women and women of color in the gaming industry. Instead of returning to “normal” business post-pandemic, we urge gaming leaders to reflect on these inequities within their workplaces. We offer that guaranteed paid leave and permanent flexible work arrangements could improve the life of gaming women employees and their families.

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
During the COVID-19 pandemic, esports and its associated betting markets grew – and in some cases, continue to grow – exponentially as consumer entertainment filled the gap left by a sport shut down around the world. What does this mean for gambling-focused organizations seeking to enter the esports and gaming space? What lessons from gambling should gaming and esports organizations be aware of as they embark on the hunt for gambling-related partners? What potential consumer impacts exist as brands, both endemic and non-endemic to esports and gaming, peddle their gambling wares?

Internationally, Internet gambling is increasingly permitted under regulated licensing conditions; however, the specific products that are legal varies between jurisdictions. Online sports and race wagering are now legal in many jurisdictions, but in-play betting (also referred to as "live action" or "in-the-run" betting) is often restricted. In-play betting enables bets to be placed on an event after it has commenced. Prohibitionist policies often cite the potential for this type of betting to increase risk of gambling problems. This study aimed to identify which online bettors are most likely to engage in in-play betting, and to investigate the relationship between in-play …

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated countless research questions for academics in every conceivable field. Chief among those are the biomedical questions, particularly those related to diagnosis, prevention and treatment (National Institutes of Health, 2020), as this public health crisis relentlessly spreads across the globe. Meanwhile, virtually every other research field finds itself exploring the intersections of those biomedical questions with more specific queries on a range of everyday impacts. Sweden’s approach to COVID-19 has captured the imaginations of critical thinkers worldwide. Sweden has resisted the tendency of governments to shut down society, instead electing for a more sustainable approach. Our …

After Howard, Before The Mirage: The Early Corporate Era Of Nevada Casinos And The Shifting Visual Landscape Of Las Vegas, David Schwartz

Las Vegas casino history is often divided into the “classic” or “Rat Pack” era and the “corporate” or “megaresort era.” Classic Vegas starts in the early 1950s as the burgeoning gaming industry established itself on the Strip and can be said to end in 1967, when Howard Hughes’ purchase of five casinos signaled the start of a new regime. The megaresort era started in 1989 with the opening of The Mirage, and the time between Hughes’ arrival and Steve Wynn’s game-changer is typically brushed over as a mere precursor to the massive changes of the 1990s.

The casino closures that swept through the United States were entirely unprecedented. Never before had an entire hospitality industry been shut down overnight. While we don’t know when Americans will be free to gamble in casinos once more—or, indeed, what casino operations will look like when casinos reopen—the simple fact that casinos are closed gives us plenty to think about.

Tribal casinos operate for the economic development and self-sufficiency of their members so additional profit generated directly benefits their communities. Gender diversity has been shown to increase firm performance across different types of business so if tribal casinos have gender diversity in management they may be able to increase their profits. This study evaluates casino management positions in 405 tribal and 567 non-tribal casinos in the United States. Results indicate that women in tribal gaming only make up 37.8% of all management positions and while they represent about half of managers, the percentage decreases as the position increases. When compared …

Why Change In The Gaming Industry Should Never Surprise Anyone, David Schwartz

There has been a great deal of change in the news lately for the gaming world. After more than a decade as head of MGM Resorts, Jim Murren is stepping down. The Chinese coronavirus outbreak has sent Macau gaming revenues into a tailspin. On a happier note, a big brand name is returning to a Las Vegas casino, with the announcement that Hilton will be operating three hotels as part of the Genting Group’s Resorts World development. Change is in the air. But that’s nothing new, and nothing the industry shouldn’t be expecting.

Does Geographic Focus Reduce Systematic Risk In Hotel Reits?, Brigitte Silvia Frutig, Prashant Das
Journal of Hospitality Financial Management
This paper examines how the systematic risk of large commercial real estate owners is associated with geographic diversification. It analyzed time-varying equity betas and geographic exposure of publicly traded pure-play lodging REITs. Contrary to popular expectation, results of this study showed that stock investors perceive smaller risk in geographic focus rather than diversification. Further, regional focus becomes insignificant in reducing the risk if the focus expands beyond two or three regions. The findings were robust to multiple measures of geographic diversification. As such, the study reaffirmed the impact of geographic focus in the context of commercial real estate as a …

Human Capital And Hotel Operating Performance, Nan Hua
Journal of Hospitality Financial Management
Human capital plays an essential role in firm sucess in the hospitality industry (Baum, 2015; Tracey, 2014); however, how the mechanism through which human capital contributes to a hotel's performance remains unclear (Bagri et al., 2010; Domínguez-Falcón et al., 2016; Ooi et al., 2015). By extending Hua et al. (2015) and O’Neill et al. (2008), this study systematically examined the impacts of human capital, proxied by Total Labor Expenses at different lagged time points, on hotel operating performance, while controlling for a comprehensive array of potential confounding variables. This study offers a more holistic view of whether human capital influences …
