For investigative research, the internet is a helpful tool, but it is not a perfect or a complete toolkit. For a variety of reasons, not all types of questions can be found, and not all people or businesses have significant digital footprints. Social media sites, public databases, and search engines facilitate the kinds and success of research possible online. However, it remains important to know which tools offer what types of information and any limitations in accuracy and currency.

Communication Through Social Technologies: A Study Of Israeli Women, Jeretta Horn Nord 405-747-0320, Dafni Biran Achituv, Joanna Paliszkiewicz

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Social technologies have changed the way we communicate allowing users to interact, share knowledge, reach out to friends and family, keep up with the news, and even promote and support a business. A study of Israeli women was conducted to determine how social technologies platforms — Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Google+ — are used and the benefits realized. Women worldwide face challenges including economic, educational, health, and political. Israel women, like women in every other country in the world, are challenged with gender inequity. Do women who use social technologies believe that these platforms provide empowerment leading to greater success? This ...

Multi-Attribute Loss Aversion And Reference Dependence: Evidence From The Performing Arts Industry, Necati Tereyağoğlu, Peter S. Fader, Senthil K. Veeraraghavan 2017 University of Pennsylvania

Multi-Attribute Loss Aversion And Reference Dependence: Evidence From The Performing Arts Industry, Necati Tereyağoğlu, Peter S. Fader, Senthil K. Veeraraghavan

Marketing Papers

We study the prevalence of multiattribute loss aversion and reference effects in a revenue management setting based on data of individual-level purchases over a series of concert performances. The reference dependence that drives consumer choice is not only based on the price but also on observed sales (as a fraction of the seating capacity) during their past visits. We find that consumers suffer from loss aversion on both prices and seats sold: consumers incur significant utility loss when prices are above their references or when the actual seat sales are lower than their references. We suggest pricing policies that can ...

Is Advance Selling Desirable With Competition?, Gérard P. Cachon, Pnina Feldman 2017 University of Pennsylvania

Is Advance Selling Desirable With Competition?, Gérard P. Cachon, Pnina Feldman

Marketing Papers

It has been shown that a monopolist can use advance selling to increase profits. This paper documents that this may not hold when a firm faces competition. With advance selling a firm offers its service in an advance period, before consumers know their valuations for the firms’ services, or later on in a spot period, when consumers know their valuations. We identify two ways in which competition limits the effectiveness of advance selling. First, while a monopolist can sell to consumers with homogeneous preferences at a high price, this homogeneity intensifies price competition, which lowers profits. However, the firms may ...

A Cross-Cohort Changepoint Model For Customer-Base Analysis, Arun Gopalakrishnan, Eric T. Bradlow, Peter S. Fader 2017 University of Pennsylvania

A Cross-Cohort Changepoint Model For Customer-Base Analysis, Arun Gopalakrishnan, Eric T. Bradlow, Peter S. Fader

Marketing Papers

We introduce a new methodology that can capture and explain differences across a series of cohorts of new customers in a repeat-transaction setting. More specifically, this new framework, which we call a vector changepoint model, exploits the underlying regime structure in a sequence of acquired customer cohorts to make predictive statements about new cohorts for which the firm has little or no longitudinal transaction data. To accomplish this, we develop our model within a hierarchical Bayesian framework to uncover evidence of (latent) regime changes for each cohort-level parameter separately, while disentangling cross-cohort changes from calendar-time changes. Calibrating the model using ...

How Do The Trans-Pacific Economies Affect The Usa? An Industrial Sector Approach, Takeshi Yagihashi, David D. Selover 2017 Old Dominion University

How Do The Trans-Pacific Economies Affect The Usa? An Industrial Sector Approach, Takeshi Yagihashi, David D. Selover

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper studies how the Trans-Pacific region affects the US economy in terms of business cycle transmission. We use a large data set consisting of disaggregated sectoral industrial production indexes from selected countries in the region and employ a factor-augmented vector autoregression (FAVAR) approach to analyze the transmission of shocks in different industries. We find that a positive output shock in the entire Trans-Pacific region has positive effects on the majority of US manufacturing sectors. We also find that sectoral shocks in five sectors of the Trans-Pacific region have a large impact on the overall US economy. Three of the ...

Cyber Security, Threat Intelligence: Defending The Digital Platform, Emmnauel U. Opara Dr, Mohammed T. Hussein Dr

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Network breaches are happening at a phenomenal scale. The unabated exponential level is forcing enterprise systems to scramble for solutions since the world is so interconnected and digitized and the internet knows no boundaries. Due to big data explosion, the platform for attackers to work continues to grow. Most breached entities are not aware that they have been compromised for weeks but finds out after an external audit or a third party notifies the organizations. Since most networks will be breached at some point, it is proper to note that legacy platforms will no longer stand a chance to defend ...

Conclusion: The Moral Responsibility Of Firms: Past, Present, And Future, Eric W. Orts 2017 University of Pennsylvania

Conclusion: The Moral Responsibility Of Firms: Past, Present, And Future, Eric W. Orts

Legal Studies and Business Ethics Papers

In 2009, my family bought a new Volkswagen Jetta diesel relying on high scores this model received for its environmental characteristics. I don't recall the rating service we used, but the top-rated passenger car along this dimension was the Toyota Prius, and the VW Jetta came in a close second. We preferred the performance and "pick up" in driving the Jetta. In 2015, however, we learned along with millions of other owners of VW automobiles one reason for the difference in performance: VW had lied. Our Jetta did not deserve the high ratings it received for its environmental characteristics ...

Finding The Balance Between Price And Protection: Establishing A Surface-To-Air Fire Risk-Reduction Training Policy For Air-Carrier Pilots, Earl W. Burress Jr., Ph.D. 2017 United States Air Force

Finding The Balance Between Price And Protection: Establishing A Surface-To-Air Fire Risk-Reduction Training Policy For Air-Carrier Pilots, Earl W. Burress Jr., Ph.D.

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Currently, U.S. air carriers do not provide equipment or training necessary to mitigate the risk posed by surface-to-air fire (SAFIRE) threats. These threats consist of self-guided weapons (infrared shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles), manually-aimed threats (small arms, recoilless grenade launchers, rockets, and light anti-aircraft artillery), and hand-held lasers. Technological solutions to counter infrared shoulder-fired missiles have been explored, but were rejected due to prohibitive equipment and maintenance costs. A lower cost option, providing air-carrier pilots with SAFIRE risk-reduction training, has not been formally addressed by the air-carrier industry or the U.S. federal government. This effort will use a business concept ...

An Adaptive Supplier Selection Mechanism In E-Procurement Marketplace, Liangjun You, Dong-Qing Yao, Riyaz T. Sikora, Barin Nag 2017 Department of Management and MIS, Coppin State University, Baltimore, MD, United States.

An Adaptive Supplier Selection Mechanism In E-Procurement Marketplace, Liangjun You, Dong-Qing Yao, Riyaz T. Sikora, Barin Nag

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

B2B e-commerce has fundamentally changed the way in which an organization purchases goods/service. Nowadays, the adoption of e-procurement, which means the electronic acquisition of goods/service, has been prevalent in supply chain management. A variety of supplier selection models have been developed in supply chain management literature. In this research, an adaptive supplier selection mechanism is proposed to help buyers evaluate suppliers in an e-marketplace. A Multi-Agent System simulation package of Repast is used to create a realistic environment where different kinds of suppliers and buyers equipped with the proposed selection model can interact so as to study the ...

Portfolio Risk-Return Analysis: The Case Of The Automotive Industry In The Czech Republic, Florin Aliu, Drahomira Pavelkova, Bruce Dehning

Accounting Faculty Articles and Research

Risk has always been the concern of managers and shareholders as a part of decision-making processes. Managers tend to control unsystematic risk mostly while trying to minimize the exposure to systematic (market) risk. The paper aims to assess the risk level and risk-return tradeoffs for the companies operating in Czech automotive industry. A diversification formula and calculation of returns using return-on-equity were employed on the yearly basis from 2005 till 2014. The returns and risk calculations were conducted on the portfolio of auto manufacturers, followed by the portfolio of auto suppliers, while the third one was performed for suppliers and ...

Predicting Yelp Food Establishment Ratings Based On Business Attributes, Peter Mark Shellenberger Jr. 2017 University of New Hampshire, Durham

Predicting Yelp Food Establishment Ratings Based On Business Attributes, Peter Mark Shellenberger Jr.

Honors Theses and Capstones

Social networking and business review sites play an integral role in the buying behavior of the modern consumer. An individual with access to the internet may observe millions of reviews on almost every type of product and service on the market. Websites such as Angie’s List, Facebook, Yellow Pages, and Yelp all facilitate this process, acting as crowd-sourced hubs for review data. This has major implications for the modern business, as past research shows that reviews and ratings play a direct role on the demand a business receives. With the vast dissemination of review data to the potential buyer ...

Myomlab As An Enabling E-Learning Technology: Bridging The Gap Between Student- And Instructor-Centered Learning, Mahesh Gupta 8524783

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Technology is continually allowing educators to combine didactic and democratic approaches to facilitate learning and producing successful managers. This paper discusses how one such technology, myOMlab—integrated within a learning management system, Blackboard—can deliver core operations management course, catered primarily to working students i.e., interns and future managers. To confront the bias against online education and engage in serious research on online education, we share our experiences of teaching one semester-long online course. Although robust research evidence is yet to be gathered to convince educators about its benefits, we propose a set of successful myOMlab activities (including manual ...
