The Pr Of Csr For The Casino Industry: A Review Of Challenging Corporate Social Responsibility: Lessons For Public Relations From The Casino Industry, Andrew B. Gustafson

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This is a review of Jessalynn Strauss' recent book, Challenging Corporate Social Responsibility: Lessons for Public Relations from the Casino Industry. Through an analysis of Casino’s CSR practices, Strauss raises some serious concerns about this alignment between CSR and PR, and provides reasons to doubt whether SCR done for strategic bottom line interests rather than purely ethical reasons will consistently accomplish what the casinos set out to achieve.

Exploring The Puzzle Of Functional Homophily In New Venture Founding Teams, Steven Michael Gray 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

Exploring The Puzzle Of Functional Homophily In New Venture Founding Teams, Steven Michael Gray

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the long-term benefits of establishing a founding team with diverse functional knowledge, many entrepreneurs assemble a team of cofounders who are homogenous with respect to functional background. I examine this phenomenon in two empirical settings. First, in a university incubator program that brings together faculty, students, and outside community members, I use survey and audio data to examine the team formation process. I found that entrepreneurs initiate contact with a range of potential cofounders: some of whom possess functional knowledge that is different from the entrepreneur and others who share the same functional background as the entrepreneur. However, conditional …

Retaining Professional Female Millennials Through Mentoring, Emily Schutte 2017 St. Norbert College

Retaining Professional Female Millennials Through Mentoring, Emily Schutte

Works by Masters of Business Administration Students

Organizational leaders seek educated, confident and ambitious employees. Therefore, the above description begs the question: How can one attract and retain such valuable talent?

Female professionals born between 1980 and 2000 are considered the Millennial Generation. Organizations that wish to attract and retain these women should facilitate effective mentoring relationships, since mentoring is proven to positively impact the careers of both millennials and women in the workplace (Leck & Orser, 2013; Tschantz, 2016).

A review of retention literature reveals a number of strategies that have been proven to keep good employees at a company for the maximum amount of time. …

Operational Challenges In Servicizing The Transportation Industry, Kelly Cavanagh 2017 University of South Carolina

Operational Challenges In Servicizing The Transportation Industry, Kelly Cavanagh

Senior Theses

As a result of declining consumer spending, more companies have been “servicizing” their business models, moving away from the typical product-centric model and offering their goods as services. This trend has been especially popular in the transportation industry, with cars and scooters now being rented by the minute, with no transfer of ownership. Apps like Uber and Lyft have disrupted the taxi service industry, effectively side-stepping expensive regulations due to their “car-sharing” business model. While this money-saving distinction has led to their success, it can also lead to their downfall, as they face many legal battles specific to ride-sharing services. …

Consumers are now bombarded with marketing messages in relation to food choice and consumption, but modern day consumers are very concerned with the food chain and have become discerning about their food choices.

This research examines “Local and Artisan” food choices and finds that consumers in general would like to have easy access to such products. While traditionally found at farmers’ markets, now everyday access is sought through Supermarkets. The researchers were fortunate in having access to a large supermarket rewards programme database where 14,646 supermarket shoppers responded. The study finds that Local and Artisan food products are desired by …

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon 2017 New Mexico State University

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The purpose of this conceptual essay is to challenge the inevitability of living with the destructive beast of speculative market economics in the 4th epoch of global capitalism. We are facing an existential socio-ecological threat from the short-term excesses of financial capitalism, a socially irresponsible form that consumes without producing value and without bearing entrepreneurial risk, benefitting only the few. The fate of roughly 90% of humanity hangs in the balance. The primary contribution of this paper proposes a 5th epoch of capitalism, inspired by Savall and Zardet’s socio-economic and sustainable approach that restores human potential and value …

Cultural Influences On Nonprofit Servant Leadership, Sungil Chung 2017 James Madison University

Cultural Influences On Nonprofit Servant Leadership, Sungil Chung

Dissertations, 2014-2019

This research explores national and cultural differences in nonprofit leadership. Despite the global expansion of nonprofit organizations, limited research is found in the literature that studies national and cultural differences in nonprofit leadership specifically. This research is designed in two phases to address the overall research question of whether national cultures influence servant leadership in nonprofits. The first phase is a comparison study between U.S. nonprofit employees and South Korean nonprofit employees to examine if there are national differences on people’s preferences for nonprofit leadership. The second phase explores the relationship between Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions (i.e. power distance, individualism …

Parkview Pet Hospital: Veterinary Practice Management System Development, Ian T. Wiedenman 2017 Loyola Marymount University

Parkview Pet Hospital: Veterinary Practice Management System Development, Ian T. Wiedenman

Honors Thesis

Parkview Pet Hospital is continuously searching for new deployments in their information technology architecture. As such, the organization needs a centralized system for recording and tracking key business processes and the data/metadata they create, as well as storing data regarding the company's inventory, employees, clients, client’s pets, and critical organizational actions. The problem, as it stands, is that the hospital lacks a robust system for storage of data, as well as templates for data entry, and reporting services that reliably produce the properly formatted data that serves both employees and clients alike. Parkview Pet Hospital has used many practice management …

Migrating Behavior Search’S User Interface From Swing To Javafx, An Nguyen Dang

Celebration of Learning

Agent-based models (ABMs) is a genre of computer modeling that simulates actions and interactions between individual entities (agents). ABM is widely used to simulate behavior in many fields, including biology, ecology, chemistry, physics, economics, and social science. NetLogo is a well-known agent-based programming language that provides a powerful platform to build and examine ABMs. However, to fully analyze a model one must run the model many times with different parameters, which can be a very daunting task. Therefore, Dr. Forrest Stonedahl developed BehaviorSearch, a software tool to help with automating the exploration of ABMs. The software interfaces with the NetLogo …

Individual And Organizational Celebrity: Two Essays On Media Attributions And Organizational Agency, Laura D'Oria 2017 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Individual And Organizational Celebrity: Two Essays On Media Attributions And Organizational Agency, Laura D'Oria

Doctoral Dissertations

Organizational researchers are increasingly interested in how organizations are perceived by their constituents, because such perceptions have important implications for strategy formulation, strategy implementation and organizational outcomes. In this two-essay dissertation, I focus on a specific type of social approval asset, celebrity – the extent to which a social actor attains high levels of public attention and elicits positive emotional responses. Specifically, I examine how celebrity emerges at different organizational levels.

In Essay 1, I first develop a theoretical multilevel framework of business celebrity, building on agenda setting theory and framing theory. Second, I propose a typology of business celebrity …

Religious Commitment, Job Satisfaction, And Social Acceptability Among Religious Groups, Kathryn E. Dozier 2017 University of Southern Mississippi

Religious Commitment, Job Satisfaction, And Social Acceptability Among Religious Groups, Kathryn E. Dozier

Honors Theses

This study seeks to develop a better understanding of the relationships between religious commitment, social support, and job satisfaction. This research specifically investigated the correlations between religious commitment and social support, religious commitment and job satisfaction, and social support and job satisfaction. After surveying undergraduate students from a southern university, there was no statistical evidence supporting the idea that the indicated combinations contributed to job satisfaction. The research did demonstrate, however, a correlation between religious commitment and social support. In addition, groups were tested for significant differences in levels of religious commitment, social support, and job satisfaction; the groups based …

Leadership And Performance In Various Group Dynamics, Jonathan Fedczuk

This thesis will begin by providing a summary of the differences between flat and tall organizations. The bulk of the research will aim to explore leadership styles and demands that are effective in flatter organizations. More specifically, it will examine several aspects of autocratic and participative leadership in relation to managerial success. It will also assess certain need satisfactions of managers in flat organizations and the extent to which they have achieved success. The second portion of this thesis is intended to explore whether structural differences influence performance. A number of laboratory studies are evaluated to measure performance in tall …
