Multiple Identities In Sport Fandom: Balance, Conflict, & Negotiation, Aaron Mansfield 2021 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Multiple Identities In Sport Fandom: Balance, Conflict, & Negotiation, Aaron Mansfield

Doctoral Dissertations

Simultaneous to the sport industry’s ascent, obesity has become an issue of growing societal concern. Scholars have explored the role of social-psychological identification in both fandom and physical health, but have not yet explored the intersection of the two. Throughout life, individuals must negotiate all of their identities, including their attachment to sport teams, yet understanding of role identity within sport management is limited. Likewise, scholars have noted the need for greater illumination of the relationship between fandom and physical well-being.

I address these gaps through three studies. In Study One, I completed semi-structured interviews with individuals who consider ...

Will Vcs Invest At A Distance During And After A Crisis? Evidence From The 2008 Financial Crisis, Samuel Wilson, Christopher Willis, Jing Zhang 2021 Old Dominion University

Will Vcs Invest At A Distance During And After A Crisis? Evidence From The 2008 Financial Crisis, Samuel Wilson, Christopher Willis, Jing Zhang

College of Business (Strome) Posters

We will explore how large-scale exogenous crises impact venture capital firms’ investment scope decisions during and after a crisis. We will analyze a population of 11,564 funding rounds announced between 2005Q1 until 2012Q4 in the US. Analysis shows that the 2008 Financial Crisis caused a short-term change in the geographical areas where VCs invest, and after the crisis firms tend to look further afield to locate viable investment targets. This study will contribute to entrepreneurial finance research by offering theoretical and empirical insights on how major crises affect venture capital investment and entrepreneurial activities.

Senior Theses

Using Industria de Diseño Textil, S.A. Resilient Leadership In Chicago Hotels: Case Study In A Global Pandemic, Deborah Popely Dba, Michael Krause Cha, Chia, Msed

Kendall College Research

The impact of COVID-19 on the hotel industry has been catastrophic and like elsewhere, the Chicago hotel market has faced steep declines in occupancy, revenues and profitability, resulting in severe staff cuts and drastic operating changes. Yet many hotels continued operating, albeit at a reduced level. What factors made it possible for hotels to adapt to these conditions? To answer this question, a case study was developed from in-depth surveys with 16 Chicago hotels combined with interviews with 7 leaders from these hotels, providing a snapshot of resilient leadership in the Chicago hotel market before and after the COVID-19 pandemic ...

When The Weak Are Mighty: A Two‐Sided Matching Approach To Alliance Performance, Darcy Fudge Kamal, Florence Honoré, Cristina Nistor 2021 California State University, Sacramento

When The Weak Are Mighty: A Two‐Sided Matching Approach To Alliance Performance, Darcy Fudge Kamal, Florence Honoré, Cristina Nistor

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Research Summary

Network centrality is an important determinant of alliance performance. However, estimating how each alliance member's centrality affects alliance performance is challenging because the end market might value each partner's contribution differently. We solve this empirical question with a two‐sided matching model that accounts for the partners' endogenous selection and estimates the effect of each side's centrality and input quality on performance. We implement the method in the novel context of the Thoroughbred horse industry, in foal‐sharing alliances between buyers and suppliers. We find that buyer centrality has a larger marginal effect on the ...

Corporate Parenting Advantage: Conceptual, Methodological, And Empirical Considerations, Pairoj Piyawongwathana, Sak Onkvisit 2021 Phetchaburi Rajabhat University

Corporate Parenting Advantage: Conceptual, Methodological, And Empirical Considerations, Pairoj Piyawongwathana, Sak Onkvisit

Journal of Global Business Insights

The pioneering work of Campbell et al. (1995a) presented four ways a corporate parent either creates or destroys value for the companies it owns. They are (a) stand alone, (b) linkage, (c) central functions and services, and (d) corporate development. Despite widespread acceptance of the concept of parenting advantage, empirical research remains scarce. Examining the methodological issues, this research describes the development of an instrument to measure the four strategies. An exploratory factor analysis yielded six distinct factors, accounting for 74.11% of the variance. The results partially validated the a priori classification scheme. A few factors partly reflected the ...

Swot Analysis Applications: An Integrative Literature Review, Mostafa Ali Benzaghta, Abdulaziz Elwalda, Mousa Mohamed Mousa, Ismail Erkan, Mushfiqur Rahman

Journal of Global Business Insights

A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis has become a key tool used by businesses for strategic planning. Scholars have conducted SWOT research for over six decades. However, a collective understanding of SWOT analysis remains vague. This study accessed, analyzed, and synthesized the SWOT literature, allowing for new theoretical perspectives and frameworks to emerge. Using an integrative literature review, this study reviewed SWOT studies historically, providing a greater understanding of the SWOT analysis in different sectors and the different approaches used in SWOT studies. Furthermore, it fills the knowledge gap in the strategic planning context and indicates meaningful implications ...
