Bridging Academic And Practice: Benefits, Challenges And Lessons Learnt From Establishing A University Wide Experiential Learning Initiative, Gary Pan, Poh Sun Seow, Grace Koh

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The scale and complexity of challenges facing the world today are unprecedented. It is paramount that universities identify and equip students with relevant skills to meet the needs of the changing economy. Recognizing this need, Singapore Management University launched a new initiative, SMUX. In this paper we will describe SMU-X which is a paradigm shift focusing on experiential learning as opposed to teaching, characterized by 4 principles: (i) inter-disciplinary content and activities, (ii) project-based learning via an actual problem/issue faced by an organization, (iii) active student mentoring by faculty and industry, and (iv) creating a tripartite learning loop between faculty, …

Thinking financially results in the best possible outcome and establishes a secure foundation for the future as an independent man. In contrast, thinking emotionally leads to short-sighted financial decisions and usually, deep regrets. However, thinking financially is not pleasant for the people around us. This comic book presents a guy, whose dream is to become an accountant. When he finally succeeds in this, he realizes that thinking financially may be effective for his boss but it is irritating for everyone else, even for his family.

Revisiting M&M With Taxes: An Alternative Equilibrating Process, Zhichuan Li, Kenneth J. Kopecky, Timothy F. Sugrue, Alan Tucker 2018 Western University

Revisiting M&M With Taxes: An Alternative Equilibrating Process, Zhichuan Li, Kenneth J. Kopecky, Timothy F. Sugrue, Alan Tucker

Business Publications

Modigliani and Miller present an equity-quantity shifting equilibrating process to achieve an optimal firm value in the presence of corporate taxes. However, in the era in which they derived their various propositions regarding the relation between a firm’s value and its capital structure, well-capitalized takeover specialists including private equity firms and sovereign funds did not exist, at least by today’s standards. In this paper we develop a simple arbitrage strategy, made viable by the presence of takeover firms, which presents an alternative equilibrating process to achieve the same optimal firm value. This alternative process is markedly different from that of …

Voluntary Disclosure With Multiple Channels And Investor Sophistication, Richard M. CROWLEY 2018 Singapore Management University

Voluntary Disclosure With Multiple Channels And Investor Sophistication, Richard M. Crowley

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

An analytical model of voluntary disclosure in which a manager can disclose through two channels with different ease of processing, and with two types of investors. The model shows that in the presence of a second channel, managers have an incentive to decrease disclosures that will be quickly processed by unsophisticated investors and to increase the disclosures that will be quickly processed by sophisticated investors. The model has implications for post Reg-FD market efficiency, as well as the efficiency of firms having multiple disclosure venues.

The Emerging International Taxation Problems, James G. Yang, Victor N.A. Metallo

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The problems of tax evasion and tax avoidance are as old as taxes themselves. Between 2015 and 2016 alone, many U.S. multinational corporations were involved in tax disputes with the European Commission. From a historical perspective, these disputes are unprecedented as they have resulted in tremendous amount of tax penalties. The most notable case was Apple for €13 billion of unpaid tax. This article discusses what tax strategies these corporations used that caused such disputes. It specifically investigates seven corporations: Apple Inc., McDonald’s, Starbucks, Fiat, Amazon, Google, and Ikea, and elaborates on the following tax strategies: high royalties, intercompany transfer …

Cryptocurrencies Are Taxable And Not Free From Fraud, Joseph Wall, D. Larry Crumbley, Lewis B. Kilbourne, Caleb Blair 2018 Marquette University

Cryptocurrencies Are Taxable And Not Free From Fraud, Joseph Wall, D. Larry Crumbley, Lewis B. Kilbourne, Caleb Blair

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

In this report, the authors discuss cryptocurrencies — especially bitcoin — and argue that because the IRS lists them as property, they are taxable, and because they are not as anonymous as once thought, they are not free from fraud.

Cryptocurrencies are digital assets used as a medium of exchange, but they are not really coins. They can be sent electronically from one entity to another almost anywhere in the world with an internet connection. There are many cryptocurrencies in the market, including bitcoin, ethereum, ethereum classic, litecoin, nem, dash, iota, bitshares, monero, neo, and ripple. Many of the cryptocurrency …

Three Studies Examining The Potential For Relational Reasoning To Enhance Expertise In Complex Audit Domains, Matthew Holt 2018 University of Central Florida

Three Studies Examining The Potential For Relational Reasoning To Enhance Expertise In Complex Audit Domains, Matthew Holt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three studies that explore the potential for relational reasoning to advance research on the facilitation of expertise in complex audit domains. Study One seeks to explicate the potential that theory and methods from relational reasoning and associated research have to advance the audit expertise research stream. The implications for future research on facilitating auditing expertise are discussed in synchrony with future research questions, including whether or not such strategies will be effective in domains with more than minor relational complexity. Studies Two and Three experimentally examine the use of metacognitive skills intended to enhance relational knowledge, …

Three Studies Examining Auditors' Use Of Data Analytics, Jared Koreff 2018 University of Central Florida

Three Studies Examining Auditors' Use Of Data Analytics, Jared Koreff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation comprises three studies, one qualitative and two experimental, that center on auditor's use of data analytics. Data analytics hold the potential for auditors to reallocate time spent on labor intensive tasks to judgment intensive tasks (Brown-Liburd et al. 2015), ultimately improving audit quality (Raphael 2017). Yet the availability of these tools does not guarantee that auditors will incorporate the data analytics into their judgments (Davis et al. 1989; Venkatesh et al. 2003). The first study investigates implications of using data analytics to structure the audit process for nonprofessionalized auditors. As the public accounting profession continues down a path …

Effects Of Bonds & Fed Funds On The Stock Market, Josh Nelson, Mason Koch 2018 George Fox University

Effects Of Bonds & Fed Funds On The Stock Market, Josh Nelson, Mason Koch

Student Scholarship - College of Business

This paper is to investigate the relationship that Treasury bonds and Fed Funds have with the stock market. This research is valuable because the stock market is a major aspect of America’s economy, although many consider it unpredictable and difficult to understand. The goal of our research is to lessen this unpredictability, as well as to assess the inverse relationship that hypothetically exists between the stock market, bonds and Fed Funds. By employing an OLS regression model, this study finds the effect of Fed Funds is statistically and economically significant with regard to the stock market, also having the predicted …

The Effect Of Regulation On The Timeliness And Perceived Reliability Of Earnings Announcements, Robert Pawlewicz 2018 University of North Dakota

The Effect Of Regulation On The Timeliness And Perceived Reliability Of Earnings Announcements, Robert Pawlewicz

Accountancy Faculty Publications

This paper examines the effect of regulations (i.e., the Sarbanes‐Oxley Act and Regulation G) on both the timing of earnings announcements and their relative informational role. I find that after the regulation of earnings announcements was instituted, firms began issuing less timely earnings announcements, and those announcements have become more important for shareholders. Ceteris paribus, after the regulations, firms have disclosed their fiscal year‐end announcements more than four days later than they had prior to regulatory changes. My results are robust to sensitivity analyses that control for concurrent earnings announcement disclosures and other changes instituted by the Sarbanes‐Oxley Act. Further, …
