Teatro, Ciencia Ficción Y Distopía En La España Tardofranquista: Sodomáquina (1970), De Carlo Frabetti, Miguel Carrera Garrido

Alambique.

An April Anarchy: Non-Realist Dramaturgical Approaches To Christopher Fry’S The Lady’S Not For Burning, Molly S. McLean 2019 University of Puget Sound

An April Anarchy: Non-Realist Dramaturgical Approaches To Christopher Fry’S The Lady’S Not For Burning, Molly S. Mclean

Honors Program Theses

The author uncovers historical approaches and contexts of Christopher Fry's The Lady's Not for Burning to justify recommendations for future productions. She argues that this play can be successful through non-realist dramaturgy, as the rise of absurdism and kitchen-sink dramas in England in the years following the play's debut prioritized realism and image over language. Language is the key to The Lady's Not for Burning and only through using image, collective ownership of the text, and unified aesthetics will an audience today be able to enjoy The Lady's Not for Burning. The author posits these ...

Dmt And “The Man Box:” Provoking Change And Encouraging Authentic Living, An Arts-Based Project, Steven Reynolds

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis explores the mind-body experience through an arts-based research approach to examine, and redefine the emotional capacity and usefulness of males through societal determinants that limits and hinders men from living their authentic selves. Through the lens of a metaphoric “Man Box” 112 men participated in a workshop recreating their personal narratives of socialization through, style of dress, coping mechanisms, belief systems and who they should be as men through society's standards. In the “Man Box,” male bonding, and emotional feelings are discouraged, while the objectification of women, material property and physical/emotional strength are encouraged. This research ...

Decolonizing Playwriting Through Indigenous Ceremonial Performances, Jay B. Muskett 2019 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Decolonizing Playwriting Through Indigenous Ceremonial Performances, Jay B. Muskett

Theatre & Dance ETDs

This dissertation attempts to express the importance of storytelling within the Indigenous Theater framework. It does so by first analyzing the progression of the writer’s unique upbringing and analyzing the influences of story upon an indigenous identity. I will also attempt to describe the aesthetics of Native Theater along two lines of methodology which includes praxis described and developed by Hanay Geiogamah and Rolland Meinholtz. I will also explain how the script 1n2ian tries to follow those concepts of Native Theater to create a ceremonial performance that uses a blending of both methodologies.

"Playhouse Creatures:" A Study Of Restoration Actresses, Emily LaPlante 2019 James Madison University

"Playhouse Creatures:" A Study Of Restoration Actresses, Emily Laplante

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Creatures. Women. Actresses. We are here because of women like Mary Betterton, Doll Common, Nell Gwyn, Elizabeth Farley, and Rebecca Marshall. Theatre is about telling stories. Their story is a timeless one: of suffering, resilience, dedication, love, and comradery. Actresses were first permitted by royal decree to act upon the stage in 1669 by King Charles II of England. This decree created a spark within the playhouses to see actresses in the flesh perform. With this came a ripple effect of a host of expectations and suppression. This Honors Capstone is a comprehensive look into the themes of April De ...

Mixed Reality’S Ability To Craft And Establish An Experience Of Space, Corey Jones 2019 Kennesaw State University

Mixed Reality’S Ability To Craft And Establish An Experience Of Space, Corey Jones

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Mixed Reality, when integrated into architecture, will enable open spaces and the perception of the built environment to change rapidly with little physical fabrication.

As architects, we design with a desired experience of space in mind and don’t typically design with a rapidly changing built environment to meet a fluctuating programmatic demand. Theater Program however, often requires such rapid changes to the perceived environment, that is the stage, and is an activator of social interaction based on a shared experience of the performances.

What would be the architectural implications if we were to integrate mixed reality as a factor ...

Embodied Nostalgia: Early Twentieth Century Social Dance And U.S. Musical Theatre, Phoebe Rumsey 2019 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Embodied Nostalgia: Early Twentieth Century Social Dance And U.S. Musical Theatre, Phoebe Rumsey

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this dissertation, I claim the collective emotional connections and historical explorations characteristic of musical theatre constitute a nostalgic impulse dramaturgically inherent in the form. In my intervention in the link between nostalgia and musical theatre, I look to an area underrepresented in musical theatre scholarship: social dance. Through case studies that focus specifically on how social dance in musical theatre brings forth the dancer on stage as a site of embodied history, cultural memory, and nostalgia, I ask what social dance is doing in musical theatre and how the dancing body functions as a catalyst for nostalgic thinking for ...

Reclaiming The Musical Burlesque: A Reconstruction Of The 1855 Musical Score To John Brougham’S Po-Ca-Hon-Tas: Or, The Gentle Savage, Christopher Drobny 2019 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Reclaiming The Musical Burlesque: A Reconstruction Of The 1855 Musical Score To John Brougham’S Po-Ca-Hon-Tas: Or, The Gentle Savage, Christopher Drobny

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Most historians begin their musical theatre chronologies with the 1866 premiere of The Black Crook. However, a few respected scholars cite Po-Ca-Hon-Tas: or, The Gentle Savage, John Brougham’s 1855 musical burlesque, as an important development in the art form’s earlier evolution. The neglect of Brougham’s work is often justified for two reasons. First, his practice of creating lyrics to pre-existing melodies reduces his work to second-tier status. Second, because none of Brougham’s musical scores are extant, it is impossible to recreate a performance of his work and access its qualities. I offer two responses. First, as ...

Dance Of Exile: The Sakharoffs’ Visual Performances In Montevideo (1935–1948), Pablo Munoz Ponzo 2019 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Dance Of Exile: The Sakharoffs’ Visual Performances In Montevideo (1935–1948), Pablo Munoz Ponzo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis explores the life-work chronology of the dancers and choreographers Clotilde von Derp (whose surname then was Sakharoff) and Alexander Sakharoff, who were exiled in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 1941 and 1948. During their stay in the Rio de la Plata region, the Sakharoffs stirred up the art scene by performing extremely detailed dances with great attention to costume design. This thesis begins with a review of the reception of the dancers’ performances by the artistic and cultural circles in Montevideo, arguing that the Sakharoffs’ “queer” trajectory resonated with the Uruguayan artistic community, influencing the creation ...

Just A Buncha Clowns: Comedic-Anarchy And Racialized Performance In Black Vaudeville, The Chop Suey Circuit, And Las Carpas, Michael Shane Breaux 2019 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Just A Buncha Clowns: Comedic-Anarchy And Racialized Performance In Black Vaudeville, The Chop Suey Circuit, And Las Carpas, Michael Shane Breaux

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

While the practice of white musical variety clowns embodying stereotypes of African, Chinese, and Mexican Americans has been widely documented and theorized in scholarship on US American popular performance, it has been done largely in segregated studies that maintain the idea that racial impersonations in musical variety is a privilege of white performers. For instance, no study exists that focuses on more than one stereotype at a time, and the performer’s body is always either white or of the same “color” as the type being played. In addition, very little has been written about the tours and circuits run ...

Accidentally Pioneering A Movement: How The Pioneer Players Sparked Political Reform, Sami Hansen

Belmont Undergraduate Research Symposium (BURS)

Theatre in the twenty-first century has been largely based on political and social reform, mirroring such movements as Black Lives Matter and Me Too. New topics and ideas are brought to life on various stages across the globe, as many artists challenge cultural and constitutional structures in their society. But how did protest theatre get started? As specifically the feminist movement, political theatre on the topic of women’s rights can be traced back to an acting society called the Pioneer Players, which was made up of British men and women suffragettes in the early twentieth century. The passion and ...

Throughout his career,he has composed for opera and theatre in his trance-inducing, distinctive style. He has also earned major accolades for his film scores, earning Academy Award nominations for Martin Scorsese’s Kundun (1997)as well as The Hours(2002) and Notes on a Scandal(2006). Adolphe Appia: Unifying Acting Through Sets And Lighting, Zachary Payne

Belmont Undergraduate Research Symposium (BURS)

Adolphe Appia was not only one of the most important turn-of-the-century innovators of theatrical lighting,he also envisioned fundamental changes in the use of the stage setting and attempted to redefine theatrical art itself. He was both theorist and practitioner, the latter in the areas of scenography and lighting design. Although most of his writings address the relationship between light and music, he also envisioned a completely new approach to acting. For Appia, the stage space was dynamic and inclusive –he wished to encourage interaction between actor and spectator. His designs show his desire to unify theatrical production in a ...

Atlanta's Curtain Call: Aids Activism On The Southern Stage, Matthew Kowal 2019 William & Mary

Atlanta's Curtain Call: Aids Activism On The Southern Stage, Matthew Kowal

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Throughout the 1980s, gay theatre changed profoundly as this relatively new genre morphed to grapple with the continuing destruction wrought by the AIDS Crisis and its subsequent gentrification. First generation AIDS plays memorialize deceased AIDS victims and provide education or exposure to the grief and gravity of AIDS. Second generation AIDS plays shifted focus to provide accessible avenues into AIDS activism intended to remedy communal heartache. The most recognizable iterations of both subgenres – As Is (1985) and Angels in America (1991), for instance – portray the epidemic from a discernably northern perspective. Before white gay men assumed center stage, Rebecca Ranson ...
