Lengua Y Violencias En Colombia: Discursos Sobre Patrimonio Lingüístico (1991-2010), Carolina Chaves-O'Flynn

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study explores the forms of invisible violence that inhabit contemporary representations of the Spanish language in Colombia and which, under institutional protection, manage to intervene in its social order. The general hypothesis proposed in this work is that, language representations in Colombia are discursively naturalized and reproduce categories oriented towards the nation’s social, political and cultural order. Once normalized in that sense, these beliefs produce invisible forms of violence that tend to be reproduced through language discourses in which the main ideological power lies in their apparently apolitical nature. These discourses are thus not read critically, but they ...

Juan Pablo Duarte, revered as a founding father of the Dominican Republic,2 recently found his nationalist message featured in a video on YouTube titled “ex Dominican@ os que juraron por la bandera de Haiti,” or “ex-Dominicans who swore on Haiti’s flag.” The short clip, about seven minutes in total, features a slideshow containing photos and names of Dominicans who, according to the nationalist, anti-Haitian producers of the video, have “betrayed their Dominican citizenship,” as the title slide suggests, and sworn allegiance to Haiti.3 What sparked the production of this video? The answer is muddled by centuries of ...

A New Test For Exemplar Theory: Varying Versus Non-Varying Words In Spanish, Anne Pycha 2017 University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

A New Test For Exemplar Theory: Varying Versus Non-Varying Words In Spanish, Anne Pycha

Linguistics Faculty Articles

We used a Deese-Roediger-McDermott false memory paradigm to compare Spanish words in which the phonetic realization of /s/ can vary (word-medial positions: bu[s]to ~ bu[h]to ‘chest’, word-final positions: remo[s] ~ remo[h] ‘oars’) to words in which it cannot (word-initial positions: [s]opa ~ *[h]opa ‘soup’). At study, participants listened to lists of nine words that were phonological neighbors of an unheard critical item (e.g., popa, sepa, soja, etc. for the critical item sopa). At test, participants performed free recall and yes/no recognition tasks. Replicating previous work in this paradigm, results showed robust false memory ...

Evaluative Reactions To Nonnative Spanish, Nyssa Knarvik, Cecily Corbett 2017 University at Albany, State University of New York

Evaluative Reactions To Nonnative Spanish, Nyssa Knarvik, Cecily Corbett

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Other Graduate Student Scholarship

This study investigates whether there is a relationship between the native Spanish “Rater” evaluative reactions of Spanish spoken by second-language learners, called “Talkers,” based on the distance of their first language from Spanish. The Talkers’ first languages are grouped by distance from Spanish: close (Brazilian Portuguese and French), mid (Serbian and Polish), and far (Korean and Chinese). The Raters (n=50) are played recordings of the six Talkers reading the same story in Spanish and they are asked to rate each Talker on a 7-point Likert scale in 15 different categories (e.g. unintelligent/intelligent, easy/difficult to understand, and ...

Meeting Student Needs: Integrating Spanish Heritage Language Learners Into The Second Language Classroom, Clara Burgo 2017 Loyola University Chicago

Meeting Student Needs: Integrating Spanish Heritage Language Learners Into The Second Language Classroom, Clara Burgo

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Despite the increase of Spanish heritage language (HL) courses in response to the linguistic needs of HL learners, these courses often combine this student population with advanced second language (L2) learners. This common scenario presents a challenge to many instructors who lack the training to negotiate intercultural and linguistic issues in the classroom so that all students can benefit. This essay presents key intercultural concerns (e.g., embarrassment and intimidation) and suggests strategies for instructors. Twenty-first-century students will work in collaborative contexts, so they must learn how to benefit from their classmates’ strengths and work on their weaknesses through peer ...

This article calls attention to the recent appearance of Don Quixote in the "real world" of economics, business management, and leadership development as a new, but mostly unnoticed chapter in the reading history of Cervantes's work. Providing an overview of this relatively new phenomenon, the article focuses on the pervasive influence of an unlikely defender of the "romantic approach": Stanford Graduate School of Business professor James March, an acclaimed intellectual and founding member of the revolutionary School of Behavioral Economics, whose original use of Don Quixote in leadership studies was ironically meant to provide a humanist antidote to the ...

A Minority's Minority: An Ethnographic Study Of Sephardic Jewish Community In Atlanta, Zachary J. Dooley 2017 Georgia State University

A Minority's Minority: An Ethnographic Study Of Sephardic Jewish Community In Atlanta, Zachary J. Dooley

DISCOVERY: Georgia State Honors College Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper explores the Sephardic Community in Atlanta through the lens of an ethnographic study of a micro-culture. The methodology that was employed in order to complete this research was that of a standard ethnography, i.e. interviews, observations, and comparison with current research on the community. Throughout the paper, the Sephardic culture is contrasted with its larger Eastern European counterparts, the Ashekenazim. Their cultures, as they exist internationally as well as the Atlanta area, are a focal point of the paper so as to have a well established point of reference to which to compare the Sephardic Atlanta culture ...

La Instrucción Explícita De La Pronunciación: Los Efectos A La Adquisición De Los Sonidos De Una Segunda Lengua, Samantha Steier

Honors Theses at the University of Iowa

Los Beneficios De La Educación Bilingüe En Los Estados Unidos Y Sus Implicaciones Para El Futuro De La Sociedad Estadounidense, Madeline Osborne 2017 University of Colorado, Boulder

Los Beneficios De La Educación Bilingüe En Los Estados Unidos Y Sus Implicaciones Para El Futuro De La Sociedad Estadounidense, Madeline Osborne

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the current context of globalization, bilingualism is not only becoming more frequent but more necessary for professional success. This fact inspired the present research on the benefits of bilingual education for primary and secondary school students and the future of US society.

To develop this study, I will first explore the history of bilingual education in the United States and the effects that history has had on what we now consider bilingual education programs. I will then discuss the controversy over bilingual education in the United States and how the controversy has shaped and, at the same time, created ...

Narrar Lo Inenarrable: Trauma, Memoria Y Dictadura En Argentina, Gloria Yaneth Losada 2017 University of South Carolina

Narrar Lo Inenarrable: Trauma, Memoria Y Dictadura En Argentina, Gloria Yaneth Losada

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines new ways to think about postdictatorial memory, subjectivity, and cultural production. I explore memory discourses after the most recent military dictatorship in Argentina, compiled in three novels: El fin de la historia by Liliana Heker, La casa de los conejos by Laura Alcoba, and Diario de una princesa Montonera -110% verdad- by Mariana Eva Perez. My research concentrates on the possibility of postdictatorial cultural production being a constantly transforming space, in which the meaning of the dictatorial past is actively produced. Drawing from interdisciplinary theoretical considerations, I examine the relationship between memory and cultural production in postdictatorship ...

The Order Of Explicit Information In Processing Instruction, Erin Mcnulty Diaz

Faculty and Staff Publications By Year

The two main components of Processing Instruction (PI) are Explicit Information (EI) and Structured Input (SI). Most researchers have concluded that the SI is more responsible for learner gains than the EI (Benati, 2004a, 2004b; VanPatten & Oikennon, 1996; Wong, 2004). However, some researchers have found that EI does significantly impact learner gains (Cox & Sanz, 2015; Farley, 2004b; Farley & McCollam, 2004; Fernandez, 2008; Henry, Culman, & VanPatten, 2009). The conventional order of PI is EI followed by SI. The present study seeks to ascertain if the order of EI and SI affects learner gains as measured by interpretation and production scores on four assessments tasks. Two instructional interventions ...

Individual Developmental Trajectories In The L2 Acquisition Of Spanish Spirantization, Charles Nagle 2017 Iowa State University

Individual Developmental Trajectories In The L2 Acquisition Of Spanish Spirantization, Charles Nagle

In Spanish, voiced stops weaken to approximants and display variables degrees of lenition according to the context in which the stop occurs, making them a complex pronunciation feature. Accumulated findings from cross-sectional research on second language (L2) speakers suggests that many L2 learners struggle to produce the approximants even at the most advanced levels of study. The present study offers a new perspective on the approximants by studying individual learners’ production of Spanish [β] over time and across phonetic contexts. Twenty-six English speaking learners of L2 Spanish recorded two speaking tasks five times over a yearlong period corresponding to their ...

The North American Academy of the Spanish Language (henceforth ANLE, from the Spanish Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española), and more specifically, the discourses about Spanish in the US that emerge in certain moments of this institution’s history, will constitute the object of this study. ANLE was founded in 1973 and in 1980, after some controversial episodes, was finally accepted into the network of academies known as Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española (henceforth ASALE), led by the main normative institution for Spanish, the Spanish Royal Academy (henceforth RAE, from the Spanish Real Academia Española). Through an analysis ...

Input Y Fonf En La Adquisición De La Doble Negación En Español Por Angloparlantes, Yolanda Pangtay Chang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
