Re-Formando Cuerpos: Las Identidades Femeninas En Escritoras Cubanas Durante El PeríOdo Especial, Amanda M. Montenegro

Honors Projects

Acoustic Epistemologies And Aurality In Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Sarah E. Finley 2014 University of Kentucky

Acoustic Epistemologies And Aurality In Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Sarah E. Finley

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation considers the intersection of aurality and visuality in seventeenth-century New Spanish poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s (1648/1651-95) acoustico-poetic discourse. Prior scholarship has focused either on the author’s engagement with Western music theory and compositional practices or else the role of musical references in her works. This has resulted in the marginalization of Sor Juana’s engagement with sound through disciplines that are not strictly musical or poetic, including: acoustics, cognitive theory and visual art. I address these lacunae by considering such concepts as echo, reflection, Ear, Voice, musica poetica (links between music and rhetoric) and musical pathos …

Posthumous Voices In The Antología De La Literatura Fantástica: Santiago Dabove, Horacio Quiroga, And Edgar Allan Poe, Jose J. Alvarez 2014 South Dakota State University

Posthumous Voices In The Antología De La Literatura Fantástica: Santiago Dabove, Horacio Quiroga, And Edgar Allan Poe, Jose J. Alvarez

School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on Modern Languages and Global Studies

CLCWeb Library

Authors in the collected volume Mapping the World, Culture, and Border-crossing — edited by Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and I-Chun Wang and published by National Sun Yat-sen University Press in 2010— begin with exploring theoretical premises about the processes and ramifications of cultural crossings to establish a clearly defined theoretical context for the case studies which follow. The case studies range from the creation of identity through patriotic songs in Taiwan under martial law, to nationality and Japanese identity, cultural autonomy in contemporary North America, Asian migration to Latin America, ethnic identity in the writings of Tan, Naipaul, Eliot, and …

Literatura Sobre La Frontera Norte Mexicana: Comparación Y Análisis Del Discurso Pragmático, Emily Celeste Vázquez Enríquez 2014 University of Texas at El Paso

Literatura Sobre La Frontera Norte Mexicana: Comparación Y Análisis Del Discurso Pragmático, Emily Celeste Vázquez Enríquez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This work presents a study of the characteristics of the Theatre of the Absurd in Latin America and in particular Ecuador, through the study of the work of the Ecuadorian author Cristian Cortez. We review the origins of the genre from the original works of its founders -such as Samuel Beckett and Eugene Ionesco in Europe- and base our analysis in the classification made by Martin Esslin in his book Theatre of the Absurd. This study pays particular attention to the conditions in which this genre developed in Latin America, the cultural, political, social and economic aspects, and the main …

Huaso Romance As Neoliberal Reform In Sebastián Silva's La Nana, Stephen Buttes 2013 Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne

Huaso Romance As Neoliberal Reform In Sebastián Silva's La Nana, Stephen Buttes

Stephen M Buttes

Building on the work of recent critics, this essay asserts that the narrative of illness and recovery at the center of Sebastián Silva's film La nana (2009) can be understood as allegorically working through the contradictions between economy and culture in contemporary Chile. Diverging from these critics, however, the essay argues that the film operates its critique by mobilizing the narrative structures that characterized Chilean criollista novels, and in particular the huaso romance narrative. Far from arguing that the film represents a nationalist or folkloric take on contemporary Chile, the essay asserts that Silva reconfigures the huaso romance to construct …
