La tumba del buque perdido es una novela que toma como punto de partida el viaje que hiciera Mark Twain a Nicaragua en 1866, cuando entonces funcionaba la antigua Ruta del Tránsito. En esta novela una serie de personajes van en busca de las huellas de ese viaje y de la utopía perdida de un país condenado a una verdad a medias. Asimismo, los personajes van en busca de la identidad perdida en un viaje que mezcla naturaleza, memoria e historia. Hechos reales mezclados con hechos ficticios. Una novela en constante construcción cuyos autores son los mismos protagonistas.

This article presents results of auto-ethnography, literary analysis, and fieldwork research to answer an underlying, perhaps unresolved, concern, relevant to this dossier: how can we produce an ethical dialogue as transnational Black Feminists, among Black Brazilian women, and North American Black women, in an ethical manner, while realizing that one may (not ever) be a part of the “carnival without you in it.” Fertile Earth/ Terra Fertil tells a long overdue epic story to an audience within the poetry: Black women, family members, other times a Black man, Brazil, white women, or “you,” undefined. Memory, Metatheater, And Intertextuality In "La Madrugada" By Juan Tovar, Brian T. Chandler

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

This work explores the concepts of temporality, memory and history in the play La madrugada by Juan Tovar presented through the use of metatheatricality and intertextuality with works such as Pedro Páramo and various historical corridos. The processes through which official history is constructed are shown in contrast with collective memory that endures in the corrido, the “authentic” voice of the people, suggesting that the only possibility for redemption is found in memory, a space where one can learn from history to rectify the mistakes of the past whose impact in politics and society is felt to this …

Se concluye que, en sus distintas acciones, los textos de Lemebel funcionan como herramientas de un operador de la historia cultural chilena a través de la manipulación de los signos del cuerpo homosexual.

Working-class literature has never had a wide audience in Mexico, always overshadowed by other types of literature, such as the novel of the Mexican Revolution, the regionalist novel, and the indigenous novel. Nevertheless, there is no better place, as this chapter will suggest, to consider the status of literature and its relationship to history and ideology than from the genre of work and the worker. It is no surprise that a work of the stature of Don Quixote continues to engender debate among scholars more than four centuries after its publication. Neo-Stoicism and Skepticism in Part One of “Don Quijote” by Daniel Lorca enters the fray by addressing Cervantes’s intention in writing the novel and the strategy he used to achieve his goal. As Cervantes himself tells us in the prologue to Don Quixote, his aim in writing the novel is to do away with the popularity of chivalric romances. In the last decades, with an increased rhythm and greater intensity, the so-called neoliberal violence has come to play a relevant role within the history of world societies. The Latin American institutional, political, social, and economic changes of the 1970’s and 1980’s, especially those produced under dictatorships, contributed to create the conditions for the implementation of the processes of economic liberalization and global market as part of the concept of institutional modernization and cultural globalization that gave rise to the neoliberal mentality. Para Donde Miran Los Ojos: Confluencias Entre Locura, (Des)Identidad Y Violencia En La Obra De João Guimarães Rosa, Silvina Ocampo Y Luis Martín-Santos, Giseli C. Tordin

This dissertation studies the representation of madness in the literary works of three twentieth-century authors, namely, João Guimarães Rosa (from Brazil), Silvina Ocampo (from Argentina), and Luis Martín-Santos (from Spain). The first chapter argues that madness in Ocampo’s “El castigo”, Rosa’s “Buriti”, and Martín-Santos, Tiempo de silencio, reveals a series of conflicts between tradition and modernity, rather than the alleged symptoms of an individual suffering from a mental illness. After comparing the three works, it is evident that the decisions of their characters reproduce certain values idealized by authoritarian cultures. The trope of locus amoenus, or the idyllic representation of heaven on earth, and its counterpart locus horribilis, or the mundane incarnation of hell, was first critically defined by Ernst Robert Curtius in 1953 and identified in religiously influenced literature as early as Latin and medieval European works. Since then, the locus theory has appeared in numerous secular texts and films, such as Marcelo Ferrari’s Sub Terra (2004), as a means of distinguishing the once-pristine ‘purity’ of provincial spaces from the physically and metaphorically cramped mines and buildings produced by an urbanized modernity. La Nación Está En Otra Parte: Cultura Y Neoliberalismo En México (1977-1996), Rafael Lemus

This dissertation studies a series of cultural products and practices that, between 1977 and 1996, either contributed to the formation and propagation of a neoliberal rationality in Mexico or opposed it. By analyzing objects as diverse as cultural magazines, art exhibitions, literary polemics and social movements, it addresses the reconfiguration of the Mexican cultural field triggered by the neoliberal turn in the 1980s as well as the construction of a new national narrative intended to displace the old revolutionary tale and to rationalize and facilitate the insertion of the country into the global economy.

Against Representation: A Note On Jorge Luis Borges’ Aleph, Ilan Stavans

Faced with the need to represent Jorge Luis Borges’s classic tale “The Aleph,” which also gives name to his 1949 collection of stories, for decades publishers have resorted to a variety of dependable images, including works by Borges’s friend Xul Solar. Yet the argument of the tale is that no human language, either verbal or visual, is capable of summing up the fullness of the object Borges’s narrator discovers in a dark Buenos Aires basement. That object—the universe itself—is unrepresentable.

Since the 1990s, Latin America has undergone important economic, social, political, and cultural transformations marked by the consolidation of neoliberal policies that swept through the region and helped define its contemporary societies. This essay explores comic books and cartoons produced by Latin American artists during this period, interrogating the various ways in which the graphic narrative medium has both reflected and reacted against neoliberalism’s impact throughout the continent.
