The Methodology Of Resistance In Contemporary Neopaganism, Rebecca Short 2012 University of Puget Sound

The Methodology Of Resistance In Contemporary Neopaganism, Rebecca Short

Summer Research

This paper seeks to evaluate the generalizations made by scholars about the inherent attitudes and identification of counter-culturalism in NeoPaganism. By critiquing and expanding the ritual theory of Catherine Bell and employing the language of ritualization, this paper demonstrates that broad statements about a wildly individualistic and mufti-faceted culture cannot encapsulate the myriad of ways NeoPagans do and do not confront dominant culture.

One State Or Two In Israel/Palestine: The Stress On Gender And Citizenship, Gordon Babst, Nicole M. Tellier 2012 Chapman University

One State Or Two In Israel/Palestine: The Stress On Gender And Citizenship, Gordon Babst, Nicole M. Tellier

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

As is the case with any of the three great Abrahamic religions, there is considerable ambiguity regarding the status and role of women both within doctrinal interpretations, and between religious and other cultural traditions in the community. These ambiguities are reflected in political practice and condition women's aspirations regarding what is possible for them to achieve. Nowhere is it more true that understandings of religious imperatives permeate politics and work to make other lines of division all the more intractable than in Israel/Palestine. The proclivity to violence between the two peoples not only victimizes women, but foreshortens attention to their …

Issues Of Law And Religion In The News -- Hutterites, Lorin Geitner

Lorin C. Geitner

The Hutterites are an Anabaptist group who live communally. This lifestyle has allowed them to compete against private construction firms in Montana. A new law requires the Hutterites to carry workers compensation for their members who work in construction. The Hutterites counter that they already have provisions in their society that provide all the coverage provided by workers compensation. The legislator who sponsored this bill says this bill is needed to provide an even playing field. What are the Hutterites history, beliefs and practices which lead them to believe this is redundant? What are the legal principles involved? Who is …

Issues Of Law And Religion In The News -- Mennonites, Lorin Geitner

Lorin C. Geitner

An ordinance in Mitchell county, Iowa, forbade the use of tractors with steel-rim tires on county roads, for the sake of road preservation. The Groffdale Old Order Mennonites, however, require their members to use just such tires, for religious reasons. When a Mennonite youth received a citation for driving such a tractor on the road, it set off a nearly prototypical Church/State conflict. What do steel-rim tires have to do with religion? And does the county's concern with preserving roads trump this religious practice, or vice versa?

The Lure Of Pan(En)Theism: Difference And Desire In _Divine Enticement_, Mary-Jane V. Rubenstein 2011 Wesleyan University

The Lure Of Pan(En)Theism: Difference And Desire In _Divine Enticement_, Mary-Jane V. Rubenstein

Mary-Jane Rubenstein

This response to Karmen MacKendrick’s work follows the thematic trail of desire through Divine Enticement (2012), seeking to clarify the relationship in MacKendrick’s work between God and creation. While MacKendrick expresses an initial desire for an "immanent divine," especially in relation to the work of St. Augustine, she later feels more drawn to "a world that in its beauty calls out the name of its creator" than to a world "in which the creator is simply present." This brief engagement explores MacKendrick’s logic of seduction in relation to the panentheist and pantheist theologies of Cusa and Bruno, ultimately suggesting that …
