Islamic Revivalism And Democracy In Malaysia, Ashton Word, Ahmed Abd Rabou 2020 University of Denver

Islamic Revivalism And Democracy In Malaysia, Ashton Word, Ahmed Abd Rabou

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

The paper examines democracy and secularism in Malaysia, a state rooted in Islam, and how it has been implemented in a country with a majority Muslim population. It briefly outlines how Islam was brought to the region and how British colonialism was able to implement secularism and democratic practices in such a way that religion was not wholeheartedly erased. Indeed, peaceful decolonization combined with a history of accommodating elites served to promote a newly independent Malaysia, to create a constitutional democracy which declares Islam as the religion of the Federation, and simultaneously religious freedom. Despite the constitution, the United Malays …

Mysticism And Syncretism On The Island Of Java, Ryan Smith 2020 SIT Study Abroad

Mysticism And Syncretism On The Island Of Java, Ryan Smith

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

On the Indonesian island of Java, there is a religious tradition referred to as Kebatinan, which can be seen as the mystical branch of the indigenous religion of Java called Kejawen. However, unlike the mystical traditions of other religions, mysticism is critical to the entire popular practice of Kejawen and is not simply reserved for a select few. There are, on the other hand, a select number of people who fully understand the philosophical notions associated with Kebatinan and so can still be considered the “mystics” of the Kejawen faith. What these principles of mysticism have ultimately manifested as in …

The Others (2001) By Alejandro Amenábar In The Light Of Valentinian Thought, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski 2020 Jagiellonian University, Cracow and the University of Groningen

The Others (2001) By Alejandro Amenábar In The Light Of Valentinian Thought, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The article offers a Valentinian interpretation of the Hollywood film The Others (2001). A particular attention is paid to the ways in which cinematic motifs and narrative elements of the film draw on myths, ideas and symbolic imagery present in Valentinian works, especially in the Gospel of Truth (NHC I, 3) and the Gospel of Philip (NHC II, 3). In the course of the heuristic analysis, the paper argues that although the film employs Valentinian ideas, it depicts different understanding of the world. This issue is addressed in the last part of the article by situating the film within broader …

Gomyō And Kūkai In Early-Heian Intra-Buddhist Conversations, Ronald S. Green 2020 Coastal Carolina University

Gomyō And Kūkai In Early-Heian Intra-Buddhist Conversations, Ronald S. Green

Philosophy and Religious Studies

This paper is about the relationship between the famous Japanese esoteric Buddhist Kūkai and the less-famous Gomyō, who you've probably never heard of but maybe should have. My paper responds to the work of two recent scholars, Fujii Jun, who says that Kūkai was a Sanron (Japanese Mādhyamika) priest, and Matsumoto Gyoyu, who speculates about the origins of and thinking behind certain passages in Kūkai's Jūjūshinron. The paper points to the intellectual significance for Kūkai of his close relationship with Gomyō and other Yogācāra scholars of his day, and how this is reflected in the Jūjūshinron and Kūkai's thought broadly. …

Adam And The Early Mesopotamian Creation Mythology, Saad D. Abulhab 2020 CUNY Office of Library Services

Adam And The Early Mesopotamian Creation Mythology, Saad D. Abulhab

Publications and Research

The first monotheist human, Adam, was likely a god, in the Mesopotamian mythology, just as the Hebrew Genesis reluctantly revealed, and the assertive Quran slightly hinted. Specifically, he was the pre-monotheist, Sumerian god, Idim, who was also called GodEa and many other nicknames over the millenniums. The names Idim and Adam are even linguistically related, according to early Arabic root words analysis. As a Mesopotamian god, Idim was the creator of the first human, and the father of his immediate generations, as he was sometimes referred to in the ancient literature. He was the preserver of life on earth, and …

The Eschatological Worldview Of Hungarian Jewish Ultra-Orthodoxy As Possible Background Of Influnce On Leopold Cohn, Motti Inbari 2020 University of North Carolina, Pembroke

The Eschatological Worldview Of Hungarian Jewish Ultra-Orthodoxy As Possible Background Of Influnce On Leopold Cohn, Motti Inbari

Journal of Messianic Jewish Studies

This paper explains the eschatological concepts that were held by Hungarian Jewish ultra-Orthodox rabbis in the late 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th century. Understanding this messianic worldview might offer an intellectual background to comprehend the Hungarian-born Leopold Cohn, founder of Chosen People Ministries, an evangelistic mission to the Jewish people. At the end of the paper I would argue that there is commonality between the ideology of Hungarian ultra-Orthodoxy and pre-millennial dispensationalism, the ideology Cohn adopted after his conversion. Thus, there might have been some intellectual continuity between the different phases of his life.

Repatriating The Canaanite Woman In The Gospel Of Matthew, Cedric Vine 2020 Andrews University

Repatriating The Canaanite Woman In The Gospel Of Matthew, Cedric Vine

Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)

This study argues that Matthew’s replacement of Mark’s “Gentile of Syrophoenician origin” with a “Canaanite woman” (Mark 7:26; Matt 15:22) is part of a wider narrative strategy to portray the land of Israel and its cities as a new Sodom, a new Canaan, a new Egypt, and a new Babylon. The study employs Dale Allison’s six intertextual devices (explicit statement, inexplicit citation or borrowing, similar circumstances, key words or phrases, similar narrative structure, and word order, syllabic sequence, and poetic resonance) to demonstrate a consistent authorial intention while identifying contemporary or near contemporary sources that would affirm the likelihood that …
