Latin American Identities And The American Demonym, 2021 Otterbein University
Latin American Identities And The American Demonym, Maia S. Schofield
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
Current literature addresses the question of Latin American identity largely in terms of assimilation, language proficiency, generation of immigrant, and political participation, while the American demonym remains an understudied topic. ‘America’ has been popularized in its usage to refer only to the United States and ‘American’ to its nationals. Although Latin Americans are natives of the Americas, they are rarely considered ‘American’. This study examines factors that influence the identity of Latin Americans living in the United States and focuses primarily on the connection between identity and the understanding of ‘America’. To examine this relationship, a questionnaire, offered in Spanish …

Las Almanegras: Trazando Caminos De Territorialidad En La Poética Afrofemenina Colombiana, Maria Catalina Rojas Blanco
Doctoral Dissertations
Within the panorama of black women’s writings in Latin America and the Caribbean, the literary production associated with Colombia has blossomed and currently stands as out as an important artistic expression and literary movement. This literature has an immense aesthetic, vital, social, and political value since it is through such poetics that Afro-descendant women are increasingly prominent globally. My study focuses on the development and trajectory of this writing and seeks to contribute to this process by analyzing the writings of María Teresa Ramírez Nieva, Mary Grueso Romero, and María Elcina Valencia Cordoba, three poets from Cauca recognized as the …

Marina Y Cleopatra En El Escenario Teatral, Jon Paul Lawton
World Languages and Cultures Student Papers and Posters
Cleopatra and Doña Marina come from distinct time periods in world history— respectively, the declining Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt and the age of the Spanish conquest. Literature has been inspired by these historical figures, creating various interpretations of this Egyptian queen and Aztec translator. Fundamentally, these two personalities share similarities: both women fall in love with foreign invaders and harness influence in the political arena of their times. For this, they must rectify their romantic desires with loyalty for their home countries. The plays Todos los gatos son pardos by Carlos Fuentes and Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare reveal …

Listening To Voices Of Latinx Immigrants In Rural America, Jacqueline Smith
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to capture and gain an understanding of Latinx immigrants’ lived experiences during their transitions from their native countries to rural Arkansas. Using purposeful criterion-based sampling, the population of interest was five Latinx immigrant students and families who migrated from their native countries to the state of Arkansas. The analytic strategy included a single-case model of each family’s transcription, two-case model, cluster analysis to identify likeness, document portrait, and subtheme development. The structural descriptions that formed the essence of the experience resulted in three themes: education, migration, and emotional experiences. The three overall …
Power, Policy, Profit: The Spanish Language In The United States, 2021 Binghamton University
Power, Policy, Profit: The Spanish Language In The United States, Eva C. Vazquez
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
Over the past several decades, the Spanish language has been considered secondary to English, specifically in the United States. However, this paper argues that Spanish is one of the primary languages in the country because it is the second most spoken language, despite efforts to maintain a monolingual nation. Due to the impact of capitalism, if one’s first language is not English, they are separated and viewed as inferior in society. After providing background on the history of Spanish in the United States, this paper explores the impact of power, Americanization, education and cheap work on the Spanish language with …

Repensando A San Simón, El Sincretismo Y La Autoridad Antropológica, C. James Mackenzie
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
The tradition of San Simón in Guatemala has long garnered considerable interest among foreign and national academics, tourists, and Guatemalans in general from a range of backgrounds. Many, though not all, are drawn to the ambiguity and multiple identities often attributed to this deity, including associations with Pedro de Alvarado and Judas Iscariot as well as autochthonous figures such as the Maya deity Mam or other figures from Indigenous history and culture. In this article, based primarily on ethnographic research conducted since 1994, I trace opinions and assessments concerning San Simón, from a range of interlocutors, and consider how these …

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
This study reveals trends in the choice of Kaqchikel Maya, Spanish, or both languages for household activities and by the generations, that is, the children, parents, and grandparents, in a village and a town in the central highlands of Guatemala. Similarities and differences between the village and town are described in both cases. The study also highlights the direct relationship between the language choice of parents and the acquisition of Kaqchikel by children. A total of 171 indigenous residents in the town and the village participated in the study. Findings are based on responses to a sociolinguistic questionnaire that also …

“Why Would Anyone Leave?”: Development, Overindebtedness, And Migration In Guatemala, Lauren Heidbrink, Giovanni Batz, Celeste Sánchez
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
Over the past two decades, policymakers have expressed considerable optimism about the capacity of international development to curb transnational migration, yet there is a dearth of research examining how and under what conditions development interventions impact migration decisions. Enlisting a case study approach in the Maya-K’iche’ community of Almolonga, this article examines divergent meanings and practices of “development” and its impact on the migratory aspirations and outcomes of Indigenous families in Guatemala. Government authorities and international development experts exalt Almolonga as a prosperous example of a globalized, agrarian-based economy. Key to its ‘success’ is the growing microcredit industry which advertises …

La Tenencia De Tierra En La Región Ixil, Elena Elliott
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Buscando Eela Chil Vatz En El Tiichajil Tenam: El Concepto Del Buen Vivir En El Pensamiento Maya Ixil, Monika Banach, Elena Brito Herrera
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
A History Of Land Tenure In The Ixil Region, 2021 Kennesaw State University
A History Of Land Tenure In The Ixil Region, Elaine Elliott
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
After the Spanish conquest, the IxilMayainitially remained less affected than more centrally located groups. However, dramatic changes occurred due to Guatemalan national government laws in the late 1800s which allowed claims on “vacant land”. Maya on those lands quickly adapted, claiming the areas where they had lived for over a millennium. The government favored large landowners who contributed to the national economy with export crops, particularly coffee. In the 1950s era of land reform, small farmers briefly obtained land, something quicklyreversed with the overthrow of the national government, accused of communism for these reforms. Conflict escalated when a leftist guerrilla …

Son For Everybody: Exploring Afro Cuban And African American Relations Through Langston Hughes’ Translations Of Nicolas Guillén’S Poetry, Hayley R. Fernandez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the translation decisions made in Cuba Libre, Translated from the Spanish By Langston Hughes and Ben Frederic Carruthers, and to explore the contemporary image of Nicolás Guillén as expressed in recent projects regarding his work and legacy. Particular attention was paid to the historical and social frameworks Guillén employed in his own work and the same frameworks he and his poetry have been associated with in recent years. The larger importance of this piece was to take a look at how international Blackness existed and was worked with in literature at the …
