These images were taken by Cave City, Kentucky resident William R. Reynolds, Jr. He photographed Cave City scenes and it residents in the early 1900s. This image shows the J. T. Gerald Funeral Home at the time of the funeral of Floyd Collins. The men are carrying the casket of Floyd Collins. One of the men as a arm band marked "Sand Cave."

Symbolism is an artistic style frequently used in the arts. Through the course of art history, it was its own artistic movement as well. The incorporation of specific symbols, shapes, colors, or identifiable images communicates to the viewer an intended message or statement. Frequently, symbolism appears to be hidden or initially unperceived by the intended audience. In some works, symbolism is so abstract that it needs explanation or clarification to be understood completely by the viewer. Beyond Light, Medium, And Dark: Diversity And Inclusivity In The Makeup And Beauty Industries, Adrienne Werle

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The goal of this project is to promote diversity within beauty and continue the push for representation and inclusivity. I conducted research on the history of makeup in America during the 1900s and studied how the makeup industry has evolved into what it is today. Rihanna’s launch of Fenty Beauty in 2017 was seen as the start of a new era, challenging beauty brands to be more inclusive. As Fenty created a new industry standard of 40 shades, many other brands followed suit. I then compared my findings with the experiences of real women in my community. I interviewed 10 …

Artist Statement

I began exploring manipulation and fabrication in the darkroom after a workshop in Alexander Diaz’s Introduction to Photography course. I have always had an affinity for nature, especially trees. I was especially moved by the barren trees seen during a cold North Florida winter. Growing up in Florida, I’m used to seeing the vast greenery brought by these trees, but there was just something about their emptiness during winter that really struck me.
