Space, Time And The Constitution Of Subjectivity: Comparing Elias And Foucault, Paddy Dolan 2010 Technological University Dublin

Space, Time And The Constitution Of Subjectivity: Comparing Elias And Foucault, Paddy Dolan

Articles

The work of Foucault and Elias has been compared before in the social sciences and humanities, but here I argue that the main distinction between their approaches to the construction of subjectivity is the relative importance of space and time in their accounts. This is not just a matter of the “history of ideas,” as providing for the temporal dimension more fully in theories of subjectivity and the habitus allows for a greater understanding of how ways of being, acting and feeling in different spaces are related but largely unintended. Here I argue that discursive practices, governmental operations and technologies ...

Forty Years Of Movie Hacking: Considering The Potential Implications Of The Popular Media Representation Of Computer Hackers From 1968 To 2008, Damian Gordon 2010 Technological University Dublin

Forty Years Of Movie Hacking: Considering The Potential Implications Of The Popular Media Representation Of Computer Hackers From 1968 To 2008, Damian Gordon

Articles

Increasingly movies are being produced which feature plots that incorporate elements of computer security and hacking, and cumulatively these movies are creating a public perception as to the nature of computer security. This research examines movies that feature hackers (and hacking) to identify if any common themes emerge from these movies in their representation of these issues. To achieve this, first a corpus of hacking movies is created, and then using a qualitative data analysis technique, guidelines are developed which distinguish those movies that actually have the potential to create a perception with the general public. The resultant dataset is ...

Effectiveness Of Catalog Printing On Online Consumers, Sarah Chan 2010 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Effectiveness Of Catalog Printing On Online Consumers, Sarah Chan

Graphic Communication

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate how catalog printing could still have a significant impact on the behavior of online shoppers. It is a common trend in companies to use print catalog as more of a branding vehicle than a selling tool. Often, print catalogs are an essential tool in reinforcing a company’s brand image. Using catalog printing could potentially enhance company brand image and extend services and products being offered to consumers and prospective clients.

Dickinson And Smith: Years Apart But Not So Different, Nicole Day 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Dickinson And Smith: Years Apart But Not So Different, Nicole Day

English

Even though there were sixteen years separating them, Stevie Smith and Emily Dickinson had much in common. They both use death as a theme to explore and mock life. Their small poems have a lot to say about life and death.

Towards A Literary Criticism: Lowry, Durrell, Dolores, And The Alchemical Balance Between Critical And Creative Writing, Mark Burlingame 2010 Eastern Michigan University

Towards A Literary Criticism: Lowry, Durrell, Dolores, And The Alchemical Balance Between Critical And Creative Writing, Mark Burlingame

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

I begin this study with the formalistic essays of Michael Oakeshott and Susan Sontag, observing the precarious position of aesthetics in contemporary literary discourse. Rather than fit the novels Under the Volcano and the Alexandria Quartet into normative Kantian or New Critical frameworks, I follow the course of alchemical allusions in Lowry’s novel and relate them to the troubled theme of modern love in Durrell’s, writing in an experiential, plot-driven manner towards a narrative describing the effects of these texts upon my fiction. After I discuss the traces of Sade in Durrell, the metafictional novelette “Dolor” concludes the ...

The King At Kaamelott, Ahmed S. Bashi 2010 Eastern Michigan University

The King At Kaamelott, Ahmed S. Bashi

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

French TV‘s M6 aired a ground-breaking television advance, known as Kaamelott, from 2005 to 2009, derived from a long tradition of Arthurian narrative form and a long tradition of that form‘s modernization. Spanning the split, therefore, between the Modern and the Medieval, Alexandre Astier‘s experimental Adventure-Comedy, adapting no single model, this Frankenstein, brought to life through canny theatrical bricolage, provokes the following concrete question: how have the dimensions of the exemplary human life of the King been updated by this installment of an eight centuries (and more) old tradition? Using the frame-work of Berne‘s Games People ...

“Lost In Translation?”: Women’S Issues In The Struggle For National Liberation In South Africa (1910-1985), Carly F. Bower 2010 Eastern Michigan University

“Lost In Translation?”: Women’S Issues In The Struggle For National Liberation In South Africa (1910-1985), Carly F. Bower

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the struggles of South African women from the beginning of the Union of South Africa and the period of Segregation to the period of national defiance during Apartheid, throughout all of its ebbs and flows. By contextualizing women’s struggle for political and gender liberation within the political struggle of black men in South Africa, this study broadens the picture of female involvement within the anti-Segregation and anti-Apartheid struggles. In formal organizations such as trade unions and the Federation of South African Women, by the force of grassroots movements and boycotts, and through the persistence of informal ...

Open: A Narrative Criticism, Suzanne Christine Matzenauer

How did Andre Agassi overcome his battle with depression and struggles with the media and the pressure he put on himself? Andre eventually found ways to conquer his demons and eventually love himself and the support group around him. In this paper, I am going to explain the struggles Andre dealt with from childhood to the bad choices he made when he hit rock bottom. Then I am going to explain how he overcame these obstacles to become one of the greatest athletes to conquer his demons and eventually was able to educate thousands of young children and teach them ...

Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm 2010 Washington University in St. Louis

Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation traces the history of the Jewish community in Königsberg, East Prussia, from its founding in 1700 to the aftermath of the Prussian Emancipation Edict of 1812, as well as the early stages of Jewish embourgeoisement and political integration. My project combines aspects of a traditional communal history with newer trends in Jewish history, including an integrated discussion of economic and cultural life. I argue that the commercial successes of the Jewish mercantile elite in Königsberg, in particular of the Friedländer family, set the stage for the publication of ha-Measef and the local flowering of the haskalah. Moreover, I ...

The Fiends That Plague Thee Thus: An Examination Of Gender And The Role It Plays In Coleridge’S Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Kathleen Tyer 2010 Eastern Michigan University

The Fiends That Plague Thee Thus: An Examination Of Gender And The Role It Plays In Coleridge’S Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Kathleen Tyer

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Samuel Taylor Coleridge was, and remains today, one of the most important literary figures in history, and his poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner continues to be one of the most widely read pieces of literature in schools across the world. When it was first published, the poem was ahead of its time and was widely misinterpreted. For the past two hundred years, even, critical examinations of the poem have tended to reveal discrepancies rather than attempt to explain them. This work examines the poem through the lens of queer theory in an attempt to explain those apparent inconsistencies ...

Franco-Irish Connections: Essays, Memoirs And Poems In Honour Of Pierre Joannon : Review, Eamon Maher 2010 Technological University Dublin

Franco-Irish Connections: Essays, Memoirs And Poems In Honour Of Pierre Joannon : Review, Eamon Maher

Articles

The name Pierre Joannon is synonymous with Irish studies and with Franco-Irish relations. I can think of few, if any, people who are more worthy recipients of this beautifully presented Festschrift than the Honorary French Irish Consul, scholar and former President of the Ireland Fund de France. You get some idea of his stature from the list of contributors to this book: two former Taoisigh, Garret FitzGerald and John Bruton, two Nobel Laureates, John Hume and Seamus Heaney, poets Brendan Kennelly and John Montague, a host of historians including Dermot Keogh, Joe Lee, Eunan O’Halpin and Kevin Whelan, distinguished ...

Beyond Europe: Launching Digital Radio In Canada And Australia, Brian O'Neill 2010 Technological University Dublin

Beyond Europe: Launching Digital Radio In Canada And Australia, Brian O'Neill

Books/Book chapters

Eureka 147 was, as we have argued throughout this volume, a European technology designed within the very particular context of European public service broadcasting (see also Rudin 2006; O'Neill 2009). At the same time, the consortitum behind DAB technology had the ambition that Eureka 147 would become the world standard for digital radio. DAB was indeed the first such technological system to achieve standardisation at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), and be recommended as a global standard for digital terrestrial sound broadcasting by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

Sounding The Future: Digital Radio And Cd-Quality Audio, Brian O'Neill 2010 Technological University Dublin

Sounding The Future: Digital Radio And Cd-Quality Audio, Brian O'Neill

Books/Book chapters

Central to the early effort to win acceptance for DAB in the early 1990s was an extensive process of promotion of the many claimed advantages of the new broadcasting technology. Digital radio broadcasting under the Eureka 147 DAB project offered many technical enhancements – more efficient use of the spectrum, improved transmission methods, and lower running costs – features that were attractive to industry professionals, broadcasting organisations, regulators and spectrum planners. But digital radio was also designed as a consumer proposition offering audiences a new and improved listening experience with ease of tuning, reliable reception, text and data services, interactive features, and ...
