Great Lakes Indian Accommodation And Resistance During The Early Reservation Years, 1850-1900, John Bowes 2009 Eastern Kentucky University

Great Lakes Indian Accommodation And Resistance During The Early Reservation Years, 1850-1900, John Bowes

John P. Bowes

In his latest book, Great Lakes Indian Accommodation and Resistance, Edmund Jefferson Danziger presents a sound and straightforward argument. Through a series of chapters that cover reservation life, allotment, education policy, and missionary activity, the message is clear: American Indian residents of the Great Lakes region in the second half of the nineteenth century were active agents in their lives, not passive victims of federal government policies or settler invasions. It is an argument that noticeably reflects the critical developments of scholarship over the past several decades. And while some might debate the usefulness of such phrasing as accommodation versus ...

Darwinian Controversies: An Historiographical Recounting, David Depew 2009 University of Iowa

Darwinian Controversies: An Historiographical Recounting, David Depew

David J Depew

This essay reviews key controversies in the history of the Darwinian research tradition: the Wilberforce-Huxley debate in 1860, early twentieth-century debates about the heritability of acquired characteristics and the consistency of Mendelian genetics with natural selection; the 1925 Scopes trial about teaching evolution; tensions about race, culture, and eugenics at the 1959 centenary celebration Darwin’s Origin of Species; adaptationism and its critics in the Sociobiology debate of 1970s and, more recently, Evolutionary Psychology; and current disputes about Intelligent Design. These controversies, I argue, are etched into public memory because they occur at the emotionally charged boundaries between public-political, technical-scientific ...

Trail Of Tears: Removal In The South, John Bowes 2009 Eastern Kentucky University

Trail Of Tears: Removal In The South, John Bowes

John P. Bowes

When the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, President Thomas Jefferson proposed that eastern Indian tribes could be moved west to this new expanse of land. Jefferson's recommendation was in direct response to the demand by white settlers for more land, especially in the southeastern portion of the United States. As a result, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which set in motion the relocation of thousands of eastern Indians to lands west of the Mississippi River. Among the primary tribes targeted for this large-scale removal was the Cherokee. Despite proving its sovereign ...

Mob Rule In New Orleans: Anarchy, Governance, And Media Representation, James Ford 2009 Occidental College

Mob Rule In New Orleans: Anarchy, Governance, And Media Representation, James Ford

James Ford

This article deconstructs the terms "anarchy" and "mob rule," which are used to restore legitimacy to failed hegemonic structures and to misrepresent collective governance working outside those structures. I use this argument to reinterpret Mob Rule in New Orleans by Ida B Wells, and ultimately, to contribute to a new theory of "crisis."

Film Music: A Very Short Introduction, Kathryn Kalinak 2009 Rhode Island College

Film Music: A Very Short Introduction, Kathryn Kalinak

Kathryn M Kalinak

Film music is as old as cinema itself. Years before synchronized sound became the norm, projected moving images were shown to musical accompaniment, whether performed by a lone piano player or a hundred-piece orchestra. Today film music has become its own industry, indispensable to the marketability of movies around the world.

Film Music: A Very Short Introduction is a compact, lucid, and thoroughly engaging overview written by one of the leading authorities on the subject. After opening with a fascinating analysis of the music from a key sequence in Quentin Tarentino's Reservoir Dogs, Kathryn Kalinak introduces readers not only ...

Humanizing Personhood, Adam Kadlac 2009 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Humanizing Personhood, Adam Kadlac

Adam Kadlac

This paper explores the debate between personists, who argue that the concept of a person if of central importance for moral thought, and personists, who argue that the concept of a human being is of greater moral significance. On the one hand, it argues that normative naturalism, the most ambitious defense of the humanist position, fails to identify moral standards with standards of human behavior and thereby fails to undermine the moral significance of personhood. At the same time, it contends that a more focused attention on the morally relevant features of human life may indeed play a crucial role ...
