Some Middle Eastern Breads, Their Characteristics And Their Production, Shirin Pourafshar, Padmanaban Krishnan, Kurt A. Rosentrater

Kurt A. Rosentrater

In Middle Eastern countries, there are many traditional products which are made from wheat; bread is the most important one, and it is eaten with almost every kind of food. The goals of this study are to 1) in general, review major types of breads in the Middle East, and 2) specifically discuss Iranian breads. There are four major Iranian flat breads; all of these are fundamentally the same, and the dough in all of them consists of water, yeast, baking powder, and wheat flour, but they also have some ingredients which are specific to each product. Review Of: Auxiliary Verb Constructions, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

This monograph offers much to typologists and historical-comparative linguists alike. Although some readers may balk at including under the single rubric of auxiliary verb construction the entire range of structurally diverse types of complex predicates examined here, the results of this study thoroughly vindicate bringing them together in a single analysis.

Verbal Complex Phenomena In West Central German: Empirical Domain And Multi-Causal Account, Shannon A. Dubenion-Smith 2010 Western Washington University

Verbal Complex Phenomena In West Central German: Empirical Domain And Multi-Causal Account, Shannon A. Dubenion-Smith

Modern & Classical Languages

This paper is a synchronic investigation of verbal complex phenomena in the West Central German dialects. The types of verbal complexes attested in 187 recordings of West Central German from the Zwirner Corpus are first classified and analyzed. A GoldVarb analysis reveals that in subordinate clause two-verb complexes, the factor groups syntagm and verbal prefix type have statistically significant effects on word order, while in main clause two-verb complexes the factor groups syntagm, verbal prefix type, and a grammatical correlate to focus have statistically significant effects. Taking as a point of departure Lötscher 1978 and Sapp 2007, a multi-causal account ...

Beowulf The Rpg, David Hawes 2010 Western Oregon University

Beowulf The Rpg, David Hawes

Honors Senior Theses/Projects

As the recent 3D movie rendition of Beowulf proves, the Anglo -Saxon epic is still in the minds of storytellers even over a thousand years after the first scops recited it. Recently in human history, video games have appeared as a form of storytelling. In particular, the role-playing game genre particularly suits epic stories, and thus would be an ideal carrier for the themes and adventures which have made Beowulf stand the test of time. Thus, this thesis seeks to create a faithful adaption of Beowulf.

The Treaty Of Helgoland-Zanzibar : The Beginning Of The End For The Anglo-German Friendship?, Marshall A. Yokell IV 2010 University of Richmond

The Treaty Of Helgoland-Zanzibar : The Beginning Of The End For The Anglo-German Friendship?, Marshall A. Yokell Iv

Master's Theses

In 1890, Germany and Great Britain concluded the Treaty of Helgoland-Zanzibar, which settled many of their numerous and complex colonial issues in Africa. The territorial exchange of British-held Helgoland and German-held Zanzibar, which was part of this agreement, had a major impact in its finalization. Indeed, without the Helgoland- Zanzibar swap, such a treaty most likely would never have occurred. Many hoped that the Helgoland-Zanzibar agreement would usher in a new era in Anglo-German friendship and, perhaps, lead to a formal alliance. Hence, during the 1880s, the seemingly unrelated questing of a North Sea island and imperialist jostling in East ...

Legitimate Authority, Following Orders, And Wars Of Questionable Justice, David Lefkowitz 2010 University of Richmond

Legitimate Authority, Following Orders, And Wars Of Questionable Justice, David Lefkowitz

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In this article, the author discusses philosophy teacher David Estlund's belief that subjects of a state with a morally justified claim to political authority have a duty to obey its legal commands to wage a particular war, even if they believe that the state has made a mistake in its reasons for waging the war. The author argues that Estlund's theory also allows for individuals to assess the justice of the wars they fight. He also argues that Estlund's view also holds that individual combatants should not be held accountable for any injustice of a war that ...

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Cung Giu Nguyên is known as one of the most important francophone writers in Vietnam, especially with novels such as Le fils de la baleine, Le domaine maudit and Le boujoum. Each of these works hides behind the mythical world of writing the author’s meditations on the hectic, chaotic and absurd realities. Le domaine maudit is the result of these reflections. It deals mainly with misfortune suffered by the individual, family and society. The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct the enunciation of the narrative.

This paper analyses the duel as a central motive in Marcel Proust’s novel À la recherche du temps perdu. In the novels cycle, it appears that the occasions the men have to fight or to watch a duel help to understand why that violent practice increased during the last decade before the second World War. The practice seems to be monstrous morally and socially.

Modernity In Márquez And Feminism In Ousmane, Geetha Ramanathan 2010 West Chester University

Modernity In Márquez And Feminism In Ousmane, Geetha Ramanathan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Modernity in Márquez and Feminism in Ousmane" Geetha Ramanathan analyzes Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude and Sembène Ousmane's God's Bits of Wood. Ramanthan argues that if Márquez presents the semblance of the signs of modernity as fantasy and delusion, Ousmane's investment in the train as an instrument of the future in realist terms seems to challenge the modernist dictum that imperialism can be challenged only through modernist decenterings and through tricking and trumping. Yet, Ousmane's refusal to engage in the hallucination of the modern in his novel offers us ...

Detailed Stratigraphy And Geochemistry Of Lower Mount Rogers Formation Metavolcanic Units Exposed On Elk Garden Ridge, Va, Meghan Marie Lindsey 2010 University of South Florida

Detailed Stratigraphy And Geochemistry Of Lower Mount Rogers Formation Metavolcanic Units Exposed On Elk Garden Ridge, Va, Meghan Marie Lindsey

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The lower Mount Rogers Formation (LMRF) is described by Rankin (1993) as a sequence of intercalated metabasalts and volcanogenic sediments with minor metarhyolite. We have chosen to examine the sequence of the LMRF units exposed along Elk Garden Ridge, a high shoulder between the summits of Whitetop Mountain and Mount Rogers in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in SW Virginia. This sequence represents an uplifted block of LMRF units enclosed by exposures of Whitetop and Wilburn metarhyolites. In the field, progressive lithologic changes can be observed walking up-section along Elk Garden ridge that are indicative of changes in lava ...
