William Plomer, Transnational Modernism And The Hogarth Press, John K. Young 2010 Marshall University

William Plomer, Transnational Modernism And The Hogarth Press, John K. Young

English Faculty Research

William Plomer (1903–73), a self-described Anglo-Afro-Asian novelist, poet, editor and librettist, spent only the early years of his lengthy career as a Hogarth Press author but still ranks as one of the Woolfs’ most prolific writers, with a total of nine titles issued during his seven years with the Press. Like Katherine Mansfield, Plomer made his mark with Hogarth before signing with a more established firm, but the depth and breadth of Plomer’s career with the Woolfs is significantly greater: his five volumes of fiction presented Hogarth’s readers with groundbreaking portraits of South African, Japanese and (British ...

Screening The Modern Girl: Intermediality In The Adaptation Of Flaming Youth, Sara Ross 2010 Sacred Heart University

Screening The Modern Girl: Intermediality In The Adaptation Of Flaming Youth, Sara Ross

Communication and Media Arts Faculty Publications

In November 1923, First National Pictures released a film adaptation of a scandalous bestselling novel, Flaming Youth, in which three upper-class sisters flout the conventions of proper courtship and girlish chastity held dear by the previous generation. The novel presents the sisters as examples of the revolution in sexual behavior of the modern girl happening in the United States and around the world. Record crowds flocked to the theater to see the wild partying, nudity, and sex of the book brought to life on screen.

Of course, texts such as these were under close scrutiny for the effect that they ...

Post-9/11 culture provided an opportunity for companies to rebrand themselves and their products as American. In doing so, they supported the president’s directive to consume, gave Americans a concrete way to express their support for their country, and made a tidy profit in the process.

Changing Times, Changing Spaces: The South Dakota Stores Of J.C. Penney, David Delbert Kruger 2010 University of Wyoming

Changing Times, Changing Spaces: The South Dakota Stores Of J.C. Penney, David Delbert Kruger

University of Wyoming Libraries Faculty Publications

When the first J. C. Penney store in South Dakota held its grand opening on 1 April 1916, the celebration took place not in the bustling business district of one of the state's larger cities like Sioux Falls or Aberdeen, but on Main Street in the tiny farming community of Redfield. At the time of the grand opening, Redfield was a fraction of the size of Sioux Falls, with a population of just under three thousand. The small, personable size and agrarian environment of the Spink County seat were, however, consistent with the rural locations the company founder, James ...

The Delimitation Of Maritime Boundaries Of The Pacific Island States, Clive H. Schofield 2010 University of Wollongong

The Delimitation Of Maritime Boundaries Of The Pacific Island States, Clive H. Schofield

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers

The Pacific island States possess limited land territory but enormous maritime entitlements. Claims to maritime jurisdiction out to 200 nautical miles offshore, and in some cases the existence of continental shelf rights extending beyond the 200 mile limit, have resulted in overlapping claims and the creation of numerous “new” international maritime boundaries. The majority of these potential maritime boundaries both among the Pacific island States and between the Pacific island States and their maritime neighbours have yet to be delimited. The paper outlines relevant claims to maritime jurisdiction including recent submissions regarding outer continental shelf limits, explores how maritime boundaries ...

Crossover Audiences In The Aftermath Of Slumdog Millionaire, Sukhmani Khorana 2010 University of Adelaide

Crossover Audiences In The Aftermath Of Slumdog Millionaire, Sukhmani Khorana

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers

Deepa Mehta’s Water (2005) set a precedent in terms of the crossing of geographic and cinematic boundaries by a diasporic creative practitioner. Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire (released in 2008) seems to have takes the notion of the “crossover film” a step further by winning critical and popular acclaim throughout the world. It is for this reason that I will compare the critical and box office performance, as well as the publicity of the two films to better understand the crossover potential of diasporic films.

Unlike Water, Slumdog Millionaire was able to get past the “foreign language film” category ...
