Geographic Variation In Life History Tactics, Adaptive Growth Rates, And Habitatspecific Adaptations In Phylogenetically Similar Species: The Eastern Fence Lizard, Sceloporus Undulatus Undulatus, And The Florida Scrub Lizard, Sceloporus Woodi, Travis R. Robbins 2010 University of South Florida

Geographic Variation In Life History Tactics, Adaptive Growth Rates, And Habitatspecific Adaptations In Phylogenetically Similar Species: The Eastern Fence Lizard, Sceloporus Undulatus Undulatus, And The Florida Scrub Lizard, Sceloporus Woodi, Travis R. Robbins

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

To understand the evolutionary and ecological significance of geographic variation in life

history traits, we must understand whether the patterns are induced through plastic or adaptive

responses. The Eastern Fence Lizard, Sceloporus undulatus

, exhibits countergradient variation

(larger body sizes, et cetera, in northern, cooler environments; presumed adaptive) in life history

traits across its large geographic range. However, cogradient variation (the expected result from

a plastic response, although not necessarily inconsistent with adaptation) has been suggested as

a null hypothesis, especially on fine geographic scales because of relatively small environmental

changes. Here we focus on life history variation on a fine ...

Investigation Of Buildup Dose For Therapeutic Intensity Modulated Photon Beams In Radiation Therapy, Khosrow Javedan 2010 University of South Florida

Investigation Of Buildup Dose For Therapeutic Intensity Modulated Photon Beams In Radiation Therapy, Khosrow Javedan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Buildup dose of Mega Voltage (MV) photon beams can be a limiting factor in intensitymodulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatments. Excessive doses can cause patient discomfort and treatment interruptions, while underdosing may lead to local failure.

Many factors which contribute to buildup dose, including the photon beam energy spectrum, scattered or contaminant radiation and their angular distribution, are not modeled well in commercial treatment planning systems. The accurate Monte Carlo method was employed in the studies to estimate the doses.

Buildup dose of 6MV photon beams was investigated for three fundamentally different IMRT modalities: between Helical TomoTherapy and traditional opposed tangential ...

Physicians, Society, And The Science Fiction Genre In The Film Versions Of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers: Or Doctors With A Serious Pod Complex, Brett S. Stifflemire

All Theses and Dissertations

Close textual analysis of the four extant film versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers reveals that each film modifies the original story such that it reflects changing societal attitudes toward physicians and the medical profession, as well as depictions of military and government in the science fiction genre. The changing depictions of characters and events in these films respond to changes in medical history, social history, and the science fiction genre across five decades. Each film reflects the contemporary anxieties of its time and the perceived ability of physicians to relieve those anxieties. Doctors are important semantic elements of ...

Misinterpreted Experiences : The Tension Between Imagination And Divine Revelation In Early 19th Century Anglo American Gothic Fiction, Diana I. Dabek 2010 Florida International University

Misinterpreted Experiences : The Tension Between Imagination And Divine Revelation In Early 19th Century Anglo American Gothic Fiction, Diana I. Dabek

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze the ways in which 19th century Gothic fiction novelists Charles Brockden Brow and James Hogg explore the themes of religious enthusiasm and divine revelation. A close look at these texts reveals a common interest in the tension between the imagination and reality. By analyzing the philosophical and theological roots of these issues it becomes clear that Wieland and Confessions of a Justified Sinner mirror the anxieties of 19th century Anglo American culture. Questions regarding voice and authority, the importance of testimony, and religious seduction are common to both novels. I maintain that ...

Artemisia Gentileschi : The Heart Of A Woman And The Soul Of A Caesar, Deborah Anderson Silvers 2010 University of South Florida

Artemisia Gentileschi : The Heart Of A Woman And The Soul Of A Caesar, Deborah Anderson Silvers

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Artemisia Gentileschi’s Susanna and the Elder’s trilogy consisting of her 1610,

1622 and 1649 paintings is a self referential series based on the artist’s own feelings of

betrayal by the men in her life. These works are comprised of her first canvas showing

youthful fear, and a very importantly timed work in mid-career symbolizing commercial

success. In these, she relates the Apocryphal tale of Susanna and the Elders to events that

are happening to Gentileschi at each stage of her life and career, aging the figures of

Susanna and the Elders along with the appropriate time in ...

The Effect Of Free Movement On Preschool Students' Preference For And Recognition Of Classical Music, Emilee Keith Knell 2010 Brigham Young University - Provo

The Effect Of Free Movement On Preschool Students' Preference For And Recognition Of Classical Music, Emilee Keith Knell

All Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted in order to examine two questions: 1) Does free movement while listening to classical music influence a preschooler's preference for the music?; and 2) Does free movement while listening to classical music influence a preschooler's ability to answer recognition questions relative to the music? Subjects (N = 34) were 4- to 5-year-old students from two intact classrooms at the BYU Child and Family Studies Laboratory Preschool. After being involved in six lessons utilizing two different classical pieces, each identified by a prominent instrument and experienced either Actively (with free movement) or Passively (while sitting or ...
