El Muralismo: El Papel De Los Murales En La Lucha De Los Organismos Sociales En La Ciudad De Buenos Aires = Muralism: The Role Of Murals In Social Organizations, Loren Crosier
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
There are an ever-growing number of social movements in the city of Buenos Aires, and a number of these groups are using art in the streets in an attempt to “recuperate” urban neighborhoods. Muralism is an art form and a concept that has a long legacy of militancy and vanguardism. This paper will address the breach between art as a product and a social reality by analyzing the meaning of muralism. What is the role of the muralist and what is the social function of the mural? Or more importantly, what is the social function a social organization or movement …

Teaching Television Production In The Age Of Youtube, James N. Cohen Ma, Peter R. Gershon
Faculty Works: Digital Humanities & New Media
In this paper, we offer an examination of why traditional television producation pedagogy remains congent into the second decade of the 21st century. The shift to smaller distribution platforms and the democratization of television distribution through YouTube will cuase production teachers to shift emphases in their overall approach. Our thesis is that regardless of the delivery device, composition, the grammar of television and story structure still matter.
Teachers of the art and craft of television production routinely deal with a paradox; specifically, prepping their students for the future while adhering to their own educational and professional training that is often …

The History Of The Shaker Gathering Order, Stephen J. Paterwic
American Communal Societies Quarterly
The Shakers were ever changing their policies and daily practices. To imagine that the Shakers never changed or did so reluctantly is to rob Shakerism of its dynamism for the sake of obtaining easy characterizations. An excellent example of Shaker willingness to innovate and adapt to changing circumstances may be found in the development of the Shaker Gathering Order. A full treatment of its history provides many ways through which to examine the ever-living, vital Shaker religion.

The Mob At Enfield: Introduction, Elizabeth De Wolfe
American Communal Societies Quarterly
For five days in May 1818, a mob set fear into the hearts of the Enfield, New Hampshire, Shakers. This little-known confrontation, provoked by two women whose husbands and children lived within the Enfield Shaker village, rallied public opinion against the Shakers and their way of life. The rare manuscript reprinted on the following pages records the Shakers’ account of the five-day mob, one of two lengthy Shaker recollections of this volatile event. Although written in the present tense, the document is retrospective and written after the conclusion of the mob, likely as part of the legal proceedings that followed.

Worthy Lives, Lisa Rivera
Philosophy Faculty Publication Series
Susan Wolf's paper "Meaning and Morality" draws our attention to the fact that Williams's objection to Kantian morality is primarily a concern about a possible conflict between morality and that which gives our lives meaning. I argue that the force of Williams's objection requires a more precise understanding of meaning as dependent on our intention to make our lives themselves worthwhile. It is not meaning simpliciter that makes Williams's objective persuasive but rather meaning as arising out of our positive evaluation of the value of our lives as a whole. This type of meaning has a normative element: it involves …

Female Ph.D. Completion: How Field Of Study Moderates The Predictive Relationships Between Social And Academic Interactions With Faculty, Research Productivity And Degree Completion, Miki Yoshimura
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to seek further understanding of how field of study moderated the predictive relationships between social interactions with faculty, academic interactions with faculty, research productivity, and female Ph.D. students' degree completion. A survey was conducted to collect data on the participants' degree completion, satisfaction with social and academic interactions with faculty, research productivity as well as their field of study. The sample included 412 female former Ph.D. students in various fields at a large, public research university in the mid-Atlantic region who were enrolled between 1993 and 2004.
Logistic regression analyses were conducted to see …

Academic Engagement: The Impact Of Personal, Cultural, And School Factors On African American Student Academic Effort, Ruth Alisha Jenkins Hill
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
Using the cultural-ecological and the personal perspective theory, this study examined the relationship of sociological and psychological factors on academic effort. This research used multiple linear regression analyses and data from the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 to examine the extent to which personal, cultural, and school structural variables predict academic effort among a sample of 10th grade African American students.
African American students' personal perceptions characterizing their belief in the importance of education, their value of schooling, and their desire for higher learning were strongly correlated with academic effort. The results also indicated parental involvement and parental aspirations played …

"Heaven's Last, Worst Gift To White Men": The Quadroons Of Antebellum New Orleans, Erin Elizabeth Mccullugh
Dissertations and Theses
Visitors to Antebellum New Orleans rarely failed to comment on the highly visible population of free persons of color, particularly the women. Light, but not white, the women who collectively became known as Quadroons enjoyed a degree of affluence and liberty largely unknown outside of Southeastern Louisiana. The Quadroons of New Orleans, however, suffered from neglect and misrepresentation in nineteenth and twentieth-century accounts.
Historians of slavery and southern black women, for example, have written at length on the sexual experiences of black women and white men. Most of the research, however, centers on the institutionalized rape, victimization, and exploitation of …
