Rethinking Confucian Authority And Rejecting Confucian Authoritarianism, Stephen C. Angle 2009 Wesleyan University

Rethinking Confucian Authority And Rejecting Confucian Authoritarianism, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Early Confucianism saw "Tian" 天 or Heaven as the source of authority, as kings ruled in accord with its "mandate." The clearest communication of Tian's intentions comes through the actions of the "people" (min 民), whose well beingthus forms the bedrock of Confucian politics. The essay begins by rehearsing the strengths and the limitations of such a framework, as well as pointing to a tnesion concerning the status of "the people" that runs throughout traditional Confucianism. Next, I analyze Kang Xiaoguang's 康小光 contemporary Chinese effort to justify an authoritarian state by means of an only modestly revised version ...

The Issues Of Appraising “Meaningful” Participation And Quality Control In Threaded Discussion Board., Lee Luan Ng

Dr Ng Lee Luan

One of the most widely used interactive channels today is the electronic discussion board. This new medium is used as part of feedback-seeking channels. There are two unique characteristics, it does not require the physical presence of anyone and it does not require the simultaneous presence of anyone for feedback-seeking activities to occur. Educational practitioners have also begun to capitalize on these characteristics in their scheme of course assessment. In this study, the threaded electronic discussion board has been incorporated into part of the assessment activities for postgraduate courses. The study aims to investigate how this medium is utilized by ...

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer 2009 Temple University School of Law

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

The approximately two million gay and lesbian elders in the United States are an underserved and understudied population. At a time when gay men and lesbians enjoy an unprecedented degree of social acceptance and legal protection, many elders face the daily challenges of aging isolated from family, detached from the larger gay and lesbian community, and ignored by mainstream aging initiatives. Drawing on materials from law, history, and social theory, this book integrates practical proposals for reform with larger issues of sexuality and identity. Beginning with a summary of existing demographic data and offering a historical overview of pre-Stonewall views ...

Bookbinding & Conservation: A Sixty-Year Odyssey Of Art And Craft By Don Etherington, Peter D. Verheyen

Peter D Verheyen

For those involved with bookbinding, book conservation, or with the Guild of Book Workers, Don Etherington needs no introduction – he has served as a teacher, mentor, and friend. Now, with Bookbinding & Conservation: A Sixty-year Odyssey of Art and Craft we can read about how he came to enter this field, was influenced by his teachers and mentors, and how he helped shape the world of bookbinding and conservation.

"Bookbinding & Conservation: A Sixty-year Odyssey of Art and Craft" contains a forward by Bernard Middleton, another leader in the field, and one who needs little introduction himself. It is divided into the ...

How You Gonna’ Keep Her Down On The Farm, Lisa R. Pruitt 2009 University of California, Davis

How You Gonna’ Keep Her Down On The Farm, Lisa R. Pruitt

Lisa R Pruitt

This is a contribution to a collection of autobiographical essays, “One-L Revisited,” in which authors reflect on their experiences as first-year law students. The author of this essay recounts her experiences at the University of Arkansas School of Law (1986-87). She frames her recollections primarily in relation to her rural, working-class background and her later-acquired feminist politics.

Thibaut De Champagne And Disputed Attributions: The Case Of Mss Bern, Burgerbibliothek 389 (C) And Paris, Bnf Fr. 1591(R), Christopher Callahan

Christopher Callahan

This essay examines the manuscript context of the songs of Thibaut de Champagne that were either marginalized in or excluded from A. Wallensköld’s 1925 edition. An evaluation of the placement and ordering of Thibaut’s songs in the codices, as well as their rubrics and melodies, affords an understanding of the construction of these chansonniers, obscured through decades of reliance on print editions. A rapid scrutiny of these linguistically (C) and musically (R) marginal manuscripts both reveals how little we know about the transmission of trouvère lyric and underscores the importance of a material-philological approach for all future editions ...

The Raat Project: Alternatives To Using Animals In Research, Melissa J. Boyde, Denise Russell 2009 University of Wollongong

The Raat Project: Alternatives To Using Animals In Research, Melissa J. Boyde, Denise Russell

Melissa Boyde

One of the hidden pockets of animal cruelty in Western culture is in the scientific laboratories that use animals in experiments. Currently there are about 6 million animals used in experiments each year in Australia (Singer 2009). The vision of the Replace Animals in Australian Testing (RAAT) project is to reduce the number of animals used in scientific experiments and medical research in Australia. We are developing a network of researchers and other individuals or groups interested in advocating non-animal based research and in strengthening the Australian Government/NHMRC guidelines for animal testing. In 2008 we launched the RAAT website ...

To give a face to the violence and help people understand that the violence changes people’s lives. It is a display of Peace and/or protest on both sides of the border. More importantly, Peace of Art raises funds that will aid Cd. Juarez victims and their families ...
