An Application Of Natural Learning Processes In The Preparation Of Edward Gregson's Trumpet Concerto, James Jenkins 2021 The University of Southern Mississippi

An Application Of Natural Learning Processes In The Preparation Of Edward Gregson's Trumpet Concerto, James Jenkins

Doctoral Projects

Concerto for Trumpet and Strings by Edward Gregson is a substantial work of the late twentieth century underperformed among trumpet players. The primary reasons for its relative neglect are its technical challenges and the demands of endurance it places on the player. A well-designed approach to the preparation of this work will benefit students and professional players wishing to prepare for a performance of the work. This project will combine the knowledge of researchers and teachers in formulating specific practice approaches for the concerto’s challenges.

The findings of neuroscientists and psychologists, gained through testing and measurement, will be consulted along …

Ann Flood, Mairéad Farrell, And The Representation Of Armed Femininity In Irish Republican Ballads, Seán Ó Cadhla 2021 Technological University Dublin

Ann Flood, Mairéad Farrell, And The Representation Of Armed Femininity In Irish Republican Ballads, Seán Ó Cadhla

Articles

This article critically considers the representation of armed femininity within the attendant song tradition of Irish physical-force Republicanism, with specific focus on the personal and cultural consequences for two prominent female Republican activists, both of whom successfully traverse the gender demarcation lines of war. While noting the didactic, often misogynistic, trajectory of works narrating ‘transgressive’ females within the broader ballad tradition, this article seeks to determine whether or not the interwoven essentialist tropes of death, martyrdom and resurrection — all deeply-embedded ideological constructs within the framework of Irish Republicanism — successfully supersede calcified patriarchal mores and in so doing, facilitate …

Inclusion Initiative Project (Final Collaborative Composition Project), Brian Ciach 2021 San Jose State University

Inclusion Initiative Project (Final Collaborative Composition Project), Brian Ciach

Assignment Prompts

Write a piece for 4-part chorale using text related to Social Justice and Racial Equity. For example, set the words of a speech by John Lewis to music or depict the noble character of MLK Jr. in music. You may alternatively write a solo piano piece, a work for piano and solo instrument, and/or other chamber ensemble (no more than 4 instruments please—which instruments are in your group?). The hard rule is that the work must be collaborative and inspired by our times from some other art form, and it must explicitly depict its source.

Embracing Worship And Performance, Robson N. Galvao 2021 Southeastern University - Lakeland

Embracing Worship And Performance, Robson N. Galvao

Selected Honors Theses

Music is a very powerful tool. It is a very important part of the world around us. Some would even say that without it, life would not be the same. When it comes to church, it is not any different. Music plays a very large part of most church services today, whether that be having someone play a church organ in a more traditional church or by having a full worship band with lights and production in a more contemporary church. With that comes the issue of performance within the church music context. One of the biggest issues within the …

Disparities In Programming African American Solo Vocal Music On College Campuses Across The United States, Ramelle Brooks 2021 University of South Carolina

Disparities In Programming African American Solo Vocal Music On College Campuses Across The United States, Ramelle Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the representation of African American composers within the solo vocal literature genre of classical music. Literature suggests the music of African American composers is seldom taught in classical musical studies. The study explored one publicly available college recital database from each U.S. geographical region (Northeast, Midwest, South, West), which included listings of songs performed at each recital. The researcher recorded the number of recitals including African American composers and provided a numerical breakdown of song genres associated with African American Americans that included African American arts songs, Spirituals, Blues, Gospel, Jazz, and operatic arias. The number of …

Music As Complementary And Alternative Medicine (Cam) Therapy: An Exploratory Literature Review, Amy Arlene Clary

Theses and Dissertations

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a broad term for treatment plans outside of conventional therapy or conventional medicine.1 The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) divides CAM therapies into three categories “Natural Products,” “Mind and Body,” and “Other Complementary Health Approaches.” The NCCIH places music in the category “Mind and Body.” This exploratory literature review provides a comprehensive review of the various ways music is being studied for its psychological, sociological, and physiological benefits.

The purpose of this study was to create a comprehensive literature review of music as a CAM therapy. The study codifies a current …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Flute Repertoire By Iranian Female Composers, Roya Farzaneh 2021 University of South Carolina

An Annotated Bibliography Of Flute Repertoire By Iranian Female Composers, Roya Farzaneh

Theses and Dissertations

Compositions by Iranian female composers have rarely been explored or documented. The purpose of this research is to create an annotated bibliography of works by Iranian female composers written for flute. This document will serve as a reference of flute literature for scholars, teachers, and performers to encourage the performance of music composed by Iranian women. Through this research, I hope to increase the exposure of these compositions and amplify interest in performing works written by underrepresented composers.

The annotated bibliography lists information about the repertoire including instrumentation, compositional year, length of piece, publishing, available recordings, commission information, a pedagogical …

The King With The Vīṇā Flag – Perspectives Of Rāvaṇa In Film, Achintya Prahlad 2021 Ashoka University

The King With The Vīṇā Flag – Perspectives Of Rāvaṇa In Film, Achintya Prahlad

Journal of Religion & Film

Rāvaṇa, the ten-headed Rākṣasa (‘demon’) king of the epic the Rāmāyaṇa, is the most fascinating of all the antagonists in films based on Hindu mythology, so powerful that even the Sun cannot rise without his orders, and celebrated as an unparalleled musician-scholar and great devotee of the god Śiva. His passion for the vīṇā, a string instrument with divine associations, is so great that this instrument adorns his royal flag as its emblem. His consciousness of his supreme powers and great knowledge soon gives way to ahaṅkāra (hubris) and lust, which leads to his eventual downfall and death at the …

Transcribing Baroque Lute To Marimba: Viability, Techniques, And Pedagogical Possibilities, Cory James High 2021 University of South Carolina

Transcribing Baroque Lute To Marimba: Viability, Techniques, And Pedagogical Possibilities, Cory James High

Theses and Dissertations

Transcriptions and adaptations of works originally composed for other instruments are commonplace within the current marimba repertoire. Marimbists have been borrowing repertoire from other instruments and transcribing or arranging them for performance on the marimba due to the relative youth of the instrument. These adaptations began as a necessity, but they are still often programmed due to their popularity, and because many academic institutions require the performance of era-specific works or works by certain composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, and no literature was composed for the marimba during those times.

Source instruments for these marimba adaptations have varied some, …

Composers And Publishers Of Parlor Songs And Spirituals From Civil War Richmond: 1861 – 1867, Michael Gray

Theses and Dissertations

This document is an historical compendium of how Richmond, Virginia contributed to a significant shift in early American music during and after the American Civil War. Firstly, we will explore the music industry practices of the 1850’s and 1860’s in Richmond, and how they were a reflection of the rest of the American South at that time. Secondly, we will explore the height of parlor song repertoire in the South, its technical simplicity, and use as a tool for music education, artistic expression, but perhaps most notably as a means of informal propaganda for the Confederate cause. Finally, we will …
