The Process Of Musical Acquisition For Traditional String Musicians In The Homeschool Environment, Keith R. Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study examined how three accomplished traditional string musicians learned music in their homeschool environments. Data were derived from formal interviews of the three musicians. The research framework for this qualitative study is based upon the socio-educational model of second language learning motivation developed by R. C. Gardner (1959, 1985, 2004, 2010) and applied to the study of instrumental music learning motivation by P. D. MacIntyre (2012). Structured interview questions, triangulated by additional informal dialogues, field observations, externally documented sources, and collaboration with an expert review panel were the data collection activities utilized in the research. Five overarching themes …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The marching band is an important and iconic part of the game day atmosphere at athletic events and community functions at colleges and universities throughout the United States. At many institutions, the band is a great source of pride and considerable resources are committed in an effort to have the best band possible. A key component to having the best band possible is having effective recruiting practices.
There is a large body of research on recruiting general student populations and many other sub categories of students, including music majors. However, research regarding recruitment of students that participate in marching band …

A Choral Conducting Portfolio, Sydney J. Sewell
Honors College Theses
This project is a cumulative portfolio of my work as a conductor during the past two years of undergraduate study. It is designed to prepare me for both graduate school auditions and the graduate level work-load. I have evaluated myself as a conductor, filmed videos of myself conducting rehearsals and performances, attended conducting master classes and completed a comprehensive analysis of choral works that I have studied or conducted. I have also included evaluations by mentors or professors administered throughout the course of the project. The project demonstrates by its very nature my growth as a conductor over the course …
Music Vs. Noise, 2015 Rhode Island College
Music Vs. Noise, Max St. George
Open Books -- Open Minds: All Submissions
As my old physics book so aptly put it, “The line that separates music and noise is thin and subjective. To some contemporary composers it is nonexistent.”1 When we hear a car drive by, we would probably not say, “Oh, that sounds beautiful!”, or even think that it is music at all, but some people might find it very musical indeed. The way dissonant/atonal music affects people changes with the individual and with the amount of exposure that individual has had to the music. It takes an acquired taste.
The Relationship Between The Christian Music Industry And Church Worship Music, 2015 Liberty University
The Relationship Between The Christian Music Industry And Church Worship Music, Julianne E. Ashbaugh
Senior Honors Theses
Music has been used for millennia to worship God. Today the words worship and music are almost interchangeable in American Evangelical churches. Christian music has become a growing genre with its own radio stations, billboard charts and awards, and recording artists who exclusively sing Christian songs. Church music has also changed drastically in the past century. The musical portion of a church service used to consist of hymns led by a choir and music director who is accompanied by a piano or organ. Now many churches have a worship leader who plans and leads the musical portion of the church …

Reading Music: Representing Female Performance In Nineteenth-Century British Piano Method Books And Novels, 2015 University of Dayton
Reading Music: Representing Female Performance In Nineteenth-Century British Piano Method Books And Novels, Laura Vorachek
Laura Vorachek
The editorial content of piano method books published in the nineteenth century contributed to the gendering of the domestic piano by targeting a middle-class female audience. At the same time, these tutorials circumscribed the ability and ambition of female pianists, cautioning women against technical display or performing challenging pieces in company, thereby reinforcing the stereotype of the graceful, demure woman who played a little. However, this effort was complicated by both the tutorials themselves and contemporary fiction. The middle-class women reading these tutorials also read novels—a fact the method books occasionally acknowledge—which often presented a very different picture of women’s …
Work Made For Hire – Analyzing The Multifactor Balancing Test, 2015 University of Akron School of Law
Work Made For Hire – Analyzing The Multifactor Balancing Test, Ryan G. Vacca
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Authorship, and hence, initial ownership of copyrighted works is oftentimes controlled by the 1976 Copyright Act’s work made for hire doctrine. This doctrine states that works created by employees within the scope of their employment result in the employer owning the copyright. One key determination in this analysis is whether the hired party is an employee or independent contractor. In 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court, in CCNV v. Reid, answered the question of how employees are distinguished from independent contractors by setting forth a list of factors courts should consider. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court did not give further guidance on …
