The Dj And The Orchestra: Fusing Art Music And Popular Music, Joe Bozich
Summer Research
This project focused on the technique of integrating aspects of modern electronic DJ music into the traditional, acoustic-instrument dominated symphony orchestra. In particular, it looked at the work of the current composer-in-residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Mason Bates. The resulting technical and stylistic discoveries were then integrated, by myself, into an original composition using this fusion of old and new: a Concerto for Baritone Saxophone, Orchestra, and DJ. It should be noted, however, that I omitted the actual use of turntables from the DJ setup, instead focusing more on DJs use of sampling and recalling audio files in real …

The Influence And Application Of Eastern Philosophy In The Western Musical Tradition, Matt B. Zavortink
Summer Research
This paper documents my summer research on the philosophy of music. Specifically, my research focused on the connection between the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and the composer Richard Wagner, as is evident in the opera Tristan und Isolde. I composed a piece of music for the University of Puget Sound Wind Ensemble attempting to utilize both a more Eastern approach to Schopenhauer's philosophy, relative to Wagner's interpretation, and to incorporate 20th century developments in musical technique, theory and language.

The Form Of The Preludes To Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Daniel E. Prindle
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
This thesis proposes a methodology for understanding the form of a Baroque prelude, particularly the preludes to the Six Suites for Unaccompanied Violoncello written by Johann Sebastian Bach. Four musical dimensions, tonal structure, motive, texture, and the potential implications of a piece’s genre, parse the preludes in different ways. As the features of these musical dimensions undergo either an evolution or a dramatic change over the course of each prelude, they each suggest a different form. Points of change in each dimension delineate segments in the music. When aligned, these changes create significant formal junctures and suggest an overall form …

Xenakis' Combination Of Music And Mathematics, Janelle Anderson
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
My interest in using mathematics in music composition stems from the works of the contemporary composer Iannis Xenakis. As a physics and music education major I am able to combine both fields of study for this topic. Although Xenakis wrote many orchestral compositions it is his vocal music that I have concentrated on as I too am a singer. Graphic representation and new music notation are among the methods used to analyze his music. I found that his first choral work was called “Nuits,” which I proceeded to analyze. I also found myself interested in the analysis of a more …

Lawrence University Honors Projects
War Songs is a song cycle of poetry by Walt Whitman, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Iraq War veterans Andrew Borene, and Brian Turner, written in the summer of 2010. It also includes an arrangement of the popular wartime song “Over There” by George M. Cohan. In writing this cycle, I researched the Iraq War, especially the justifications for invading the country. I also researched previous musical works about war. This research informed the composition of the cycle. While I wanted to illustrate the issues of the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I also wanted the cycle to be universal …

A Metrical Analysis And Rebarring Of Paul Creston's Sonata For Alto Saxophone And Piano, Op. 19, Christopher Kyle Sweitzer
Student Research, Creative Activity, and Performance - School of Music
The Sonata For Alto Saxophone and Piano Op. 19 is one of the most popular pieces in the saxophone literature, commonly played by professional saxophonists during their training. It features exciting rhythmic devices like irregular and mixed meter, the notation of which is the main focus of this paper. Although Creston often used irregular and mixed meter in his compositions, he rarely specifically notated them, choosing instead to use accents, beams, slurs, and other phenomenal cues at the musical surface to create the effect of these metric plans. Time signatures often remained constant throughout entire movements. Creston believed this would …
