Many early marginal notes, some affected …

Review Of Cleaver, Laura, Illuminated History Books In The Anglo-Norman World, 1066–1272, Edith Mulhern

Scholarship at Penn Libraries

The book reviewed argues that the meaning and context of Anglo-Norman histories cannot be fully understood without attention to the visual layout of the entire page. By comparing extant copies of the same texts, the book considers what factors influence the mise-en-page, and how these manuscripts circulated and were amended through time.

Blandin De Cornoalha, A Comic Occitan Romance: A New Critical Edition And Translation, Wendy Pfeffer, Margaret Burrell 2022 University of Louisville

Blandin De Cornoalha, A Comic Occitan Romance: A New Critical Edition And Translation, Wendy Pfeffer, Margaret Burrell

TEAMS Varia

This volume presents the first widely available edition in English of the medieval romance Blandin de Cornoalha, accompanied by a translation and introduction to the work. Composed in the second half of the fourteenth century by an anonymous author, the story offers an early recording of the Sleeping Beauty folktale, incorporated into the adventures of two knights. Many elements in this romance from the south of France are comic, suggesting that Blandin is not simply a tale of knights in battle, but also a parody of medieval romance in general.

A brief explanation of the office of notary and the purpose of notarial documents (f. 1r), followed by transcriptions of deeds and acts arranged in subject order as examples for a notary drawing up a document. The numbering of books corresponding to subjects is frequently in error, and the manuscript was probably compiled for personal use by the notary Contarini (or Conticini). Subjects include loans, sale contracts, dowries, wills, confessions, and evidence. Deeds added at the end (f. 37v-40v) may be in multiple hands. A table of contents at the beginning lists all the chapters from all forty disputations, but the text breaks off in the middle of Disputation 35, Chapter 3, leaving a blank verso and another empty folio. Erased pencil page numbers, lack of a title page, and the finding tab all suggest that this manuscript may once have included Books I-II.
