Situated in the deep south Texas borderlands, over 90% of our students are Hispanic or Latino/a/x and the majority are bilingual. That is, most students enrolled across every course at our university are heritage speakers of Spanish. As professional philosophers, we believe that teaching these students should involve engaging them as the bilingual and bicultural students they are while helping them develop philosophical biliteracy. Spanish Rhotic Production And Dialectal Variation In Mexican Heritage Speakers, Ileana Perez

Spanish has two phonemic rhotics, the tap /ɾ/ and trill /r/, but these phonemic sounds present dialectal variation. Previous work has looked at variation and dialectal rhotics amongst monolingual speakers of Spanish, finding that, depending on their dialect, monolinguals can produce aspirated, assibilated, and fricated rhotics as well as lateralized and deleted rhotics (Bradley et al., 1999). Only one study has analyzed Heritage speakers’ rhotic variation and found that, Heritage speakers are able to produce dialectal rhotics such as the Mexican assibilated rhotic (Cummings Ruiz et al., 2020). This study explores the sociolinguistic role of uptalk (also known as high rising terminals) in the local Spanish of Laredo, Texas. It particularly focuses on the interrelationship between uptalk, area of residence, and the self-identification as a fresa. Spanish Heritage Speakers (HSs) in the U.S. can be the target of indirect acts of discrimination related to their ethnolinguistic identity (Ayón & Philbin, 2017). Name-based microaggressions are subtle insults directed at marginalized groups or individuals as a reaction, often unconscious or automatic, to their given name. This can include mispronunciation, renaming practices or indexical bleaching of an ethnic name (i.e., Bucholtz, 2005; Ayón & Philbin, 2017). Although it may seem harmless to a casual observer, students exposed to name-related subtle discrimination can experience feelings of othering, hyper-awareness, and unconscious internalization of harmful racial ideologies directed towards their ethnoracial group …

The presentation draws on personal experience teaching French with Spanish as co-language of instruction with majority-Hispanic classes as well as the emergence of a Spanish-centered approach to Romance language instruction at Hispanic-serving institutions primarily in California (Martinez 2014) and more recently in Texas.
Exploring the advantages and difficulties of using Spanish as a “gateway language” (Donato 2018) alongside French in A1-level classes, the presentation will share the experiences of students enrolled in these classes who fall under various categories, including Heritage speakers and bilinguals.

This paper presents a community engagement project that promotes social justice through language, by educating university HL speakers who, in turn, become teachers and mentors for high schoolers. The results show that students develop a better understanding of language diversity, ideologies, and attitudes as well as their own language practices.

The Amazon rainforest, home to many and diverse indigenous language populations, expands over a vast territory in South America, the most extensive river system in the world. In the western area, Spanish coexists with many indigenous languages since colonial times. New varieties of Amazonian Spanish emerged in this context of long-term language contact. These varieties are understudied, although research has increased in the last decade. Recent works show that Spanish linguistic features are shared across political borders and point to a macro-region. Black Puerto Rican musician Rafael Cortijo (1928-1982) is a key feature in Puerto Rican, Caribbean, and Latin American music. He is one of the few musicians celebrated internationally for his skills as a percussionist, orchestra leader, and composer. Despite this, his music is often described as as ‘noise’, or at least that was my memory growing up in a predominantly white community in Puerto Rico. Enslavement, colonization, and the systems that uphold racial injustice were and still are a series of new, unfathomable, and challenging experiences that prompt individuals within the diaspora to seek orientation. How does a human cope with centuries of attempts at the systematic destruction of their humanity, culture, and identity? How can they reclaim that identity, especially when so much of it seems lost? Ecuador is a pluricultural and multilingual territory with four natural regions, several musical genres, and interpretations. Amazon, Galápagos, Mountain Range, and Coastal region. In the following dissertation, the author develops concepts of four traditional rhythms, their composers, and harmonic and phonetic characteristics from the mountain range region of his homeland, Ecuador.
The present document is a descriptive study of vocal Andean music and the application of the operatic style in classical vocal technique for performance practice.

This study used a survey to investigate self-study and university-enrolled Chinese learners’ habits in studying Chinese vocabulary in order to determine what study methods influence a.) learners’ confidence in learning Chinese vocabulary and b.) what aspects of Chinese vocabulary they consider easy or difficult. We were particularly interested in seeing what the data had to say about students’ attitudes towards characters and the written language, given that the field of Chinese language pedagogy is known for a stronger focus on the written language as opposed to the spoken language. This article analyzes Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes’ Retrato calado (Silent Portrait) published in 1988, considering the theoretical discussions on testimonio's epistemology—addressing the challenge of narrating trauma and the risk of stylization. It compares Fortes' memoir with Fernando Gabeira's O que é isso, companheiro? (What's This, Comrade?) from 1979, examining diverse approaches to capturing historical trauma through literature and its impact on collective memory about Brazilian Dictatorship (1964-1985).
