Contested Commemoration: The Relationship Between Politics And The Memorialization Of The Second World War In Polish Literature, Cinema, And Museums (1945-Present), Alexandria Joyner

This study examines the relationship between politics and the memory of the Second World War in Polish literature, cinema, and museums from 1945-Present. I argue that the memory of the Second World War has changed radically over the last seventy- five years as the Polish government, in both the communist and post-communist periods, pursued a politics of memory. I build this argument first by identifying three political turning points that caused the communist government to confront and reevaluate the narrative they promoted about the war: 1945, 1956, and 1967. Conflicts Over Local Beliefs: "Feudal Superstitions" As Intangible Cultural Heritage In Contemporary China, Ziying You

This article addresses conflicts over local beliefs in both discourse and practice in contemporary China, especially in the process of protecting local beliefs as China’s national intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the twenty-first century. These local beliefs were stigmatized as “feudal superstitions” in revolution- ary China and were revived in public since the reform era started in 1978. With influence from UNESCO, the project to protect ICH has spread all over China since 2004, and many local beliefs are promoted as China’s national ICH. Mortuary archaeology is the archaeological study of death and burial. In North America, the anthropological, cross-cultural, and deep temporal perspectives are employed (cf. Martin et al. 2013a). The myriad ways that societies deal with death are the product of complex and intertwined social, economic, and environmental factors such as class, gender, ethnicity, subsistence practice, and social complexity, to name a few. Therefore, the study of mortuary rituals sheds important light on social complexity and organization. This makes it an excellent topic for an advanced course in a Department of Anthropology. Pfister of photographic negatives from the inventories of the Ruston, Louisiana photographic studios of John Green Davis (1890's-?) and John Green Davis Jr. (?-1943), of the amateur photographers William Marbury (1930's-1940's) and J.E. Woodward (mid-1940's-1971), and of Louisiana Tech University photographer Bob J. Pfister (1950's), including index prepared by Pamela Pfister, who made the prints. Woodward accumulated the collection, which was given at his death to Pfister (some are photocopies). Prints funded by Ruston Building and Loan Association, President Benjamin Denny, in honor of the centennial of Louisiana Tech University, 1894-1994
