Where Did The Mullahs Go? Oral Histories From Rural Uzbekistan, Marianne Kamp

History Faculty Publications

Oral histories with elderly collective farmers in Uzbekistan, who recalled the establishment of their collective farms in the 1930s, depict the closing of village mosques and the disappearance of many rural mullahs. Anti-religious policies focused on Islamic institutions and paid functionaries; however, mullahs were left in many villages, and they continued to lead Islamic practices clandestinely. Religious leaders who had never been closely tied to Islamic institutions, such as otins (women religious leaders) were not targeted for arrest and removal. Our respondents remembered times when it was difficult to engage in any practice of Islam publicly, but they emphasized that ...

History Faculty Publications

This volume is a thorough presentation of sociologist Anna Temkina’s comparative study of paradigms of women’s sexuality in post-Soviet Tajikistan, Armenia, and Russia. In three cities (Khujand, Yerevan, and Saint Petersburg), Temkina and colleagues carried out in-depth interviews to ask subjects, both female and male, about their experiences of sexuality and their views on sexuality. Her interest is in the spectrum of control, or freedom, of women’s sexuality, drawing on Giddens, Kon, and Connell to theorize the centrality of women’s sexuality to gender relations. The research in three post-Soviet states explores changes in paradigms of sexuality ...

A Statue Gets A Fresh Coat Of Paint: A Glimpse At The Catholic Church And Chicano Activists In The Rio Grande Valley In 1970, Gilberto M. Hinojosa Ph.D

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

In December, 1969, at the end of a weekend conference, a group of Mexican American activist students painted a statue of Mary brown, causing an uproar among some priests and faithful. This reaction did not, however, cause the Church to pull back on its commitment to social justice. Indeed, some bishops, priests, and laity took strong positions and acted on issues related to farmworkers and Chicano youth projects in the face of opposition within the Church and among the public. This paper utilizes oral history interviews, newspaper accounts, and documents in archives of the Oblate School of Theology

Dwight Eisenhower And Douglas Macarthur In The Philippines: There Must Be A Day Of Reckoning, Kerry Irish

Faculty Publications - Department of History, Politics, and International Studies

In 1935 Major Dwight Eisenhower accompanied General Douglas MacArthur to the Philippines, where MacArthur was tasked with creating a Philippine army capable of defending an independent Philippines. Eisenhower's odyssey in the American colony (1935-39) left him with a deep and indelible negative impression of MacArthur. Historians have disputed the cause and depth of the rift. Ike's disagreements with MacArthur were more philosophical than personal and concerned two significant issues: building an army in a developing but still impoverished country, and the leadership qualities that an American army officer should exhibit and develop in his subordinates. The dispute and ...

Religions: From Phobia To Understanding, Nasr Abu-Zayd

Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge

This lead article in the Fall 2010 issue of Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge celebrating him is one of the last published by the renowned scholar of Islam and Humanism, Professor Nasr Hamed Abu-Zayd, before his sudden passing in July 2010. In this paper, he argues that the challenge for Muslim thinkers nowadays is how to reconnect the fragmented Islamic culture of the past, which made the great Islamic civilization between the 9th and the 12th centuries, and contributed to the modern world’s values of freedom, equality and justice. It is not an impossible task to ...

Porter's Watch: The View From The Firehouse, Lynn E. Niedermeier

Lynn E. Niedermeier

Bowling Green, Kentucky fireman Euclid Porter Dodd (1870-1958) witnessed many changes in the department and the city during his long career. In two record books that are now held in WKU's Special Collections Library, Dodd noted such events as the loss of a beloved fire wagon horse, his own dismissal and rehiring, local and national news, and the death of a young man that just might be the source of a popular Western Kentucky University ghost story.

Grounding "Language" In The Senses: What The Eyes And Ears Reveal About Ming 名 (Names) In Early Chinese Texts, Jane Geaney

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Scholarship on early Chinese theories of “language” regularly treats the term ming 名 (name) as the equivalent of “word.” But there is a significant difference between a “word” and a “name.”1 Moreover, while a “word” is often understood to mean a unit of language that is identifiable in its sameness across speech and writing, there is reason to believe that a ming was mainly used to mean a unit of meaningful sound.2 Analyzing the function of ming is a prerequisite for understanding early Chinese theories of “language”—if such a term is even appropriate. Such an analysis will ...
