Introduction To The Workplace Constitution From The New Deal To The New Right, Sophia Z. Lee 2014 University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School

Introduction To The Workplace Constitution From The New Deal To The New Right, Sophia Z. Lee

All Faculty Scholarship

Today, most American workers do not have constitutional rights on the job. As The Workplace Constitution shows, this outcome was far from inevitable. Instead, American workers have a long history of fighting for such rights. Beginning in the 1930s, civil rights advocates sought constitutional protections against racial discrimination by employers and unions. At the same time, a conservative right-to-work movement argued that the Constitution protected workers from having to join or support unions. Those two movements, with their shared aim of extending constitutional protections to American workers, were a potentially powerful combination. But they sought to use those protections to …

There are many books that have dealt with agrarian issues in Mexico in general terms, five of which I have used for this paper. However, we lack knowledge of the practice of these critical issues, even to this day, and how they were enacted differed from state to state.

Keeping House On The Comstock: Irish Immigrant Women In Nevada, 1850-1880, Christina M. Thompson 2014 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Keeping House On The Comstock: Irish Immigrant Women In Nevada, 1850-1880, Christina M. Thompson

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

The lives of Irish immigrant women in Nevada during the mid-nineteenth century have not been studied at great length to date. This project attempts to explore the relationship that these women had with their communities, their families, and themselves while comparing their experiences to the lives of Irish immigrant women living in the larger Irish communities located on the east coast of the United States.

Protecting The Fairer Sex: Indiana's Failure To Improve The Lives Of Working Women, Abigail Neuman 2014 Butler University

Protecting The Fairer Sex: Indiana's Failure To Improve The Lives Of Working Women, Abigail Neuman

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

"Protecting the Fairer Sex" explores the refusal of Indiana lawmakers to place the well-being of their working women above "a can of corn," an accusation that was made by one state representative early in the legislative discussions.7 It investigates how the legislators knew nothing would come of protective legislation in the state, regardless of their fake expressions of concern. My work tells the story of how Indiana women were pushed to the periphery of a state that prided itself on its seemingly progressive nature.

Empire, Labor, And Environment: Coal Mining And Anticapitalist Environmentalism In The Americas, Avi Chomsky 2013 Salem State University

Empire, Labor, And Environment: Coal Mining And Anticapitalist Environmentalism In The Americas, Avi Chomsky

Avi Chomsky

Latin American political movements linking traditional peasant values of subsistence with a leftist critique of imperialism are contributing to new forms of environmentalism there. While in the United States labor and environmental movements tend to operate within mainstream political and economic models based on privileging high levels of consumption and economic growth, Latin American voices are challenging both the global economic order and traditional concepts of economic development. From indigenous and peasant movements to leftist labor unions to political leaders, Latin Americans are calling for economic development that privileges the rights of rural peoples and their environments, and redistribution of …

Review Of The Book The Davis-Bacon Act, Ronald G. Ehrenberg 2013 Cornell University

Review Of The Book The Davis-Bacon Act, Ronald G. Ehrenberg

Ronald G. Ehrenberg

[Excerpt] Armand J. Thieblot's monograph is not the first study of the administration and impact of the Davis-Bacon Act; however, it certainly is the most comprehensive. Successive chapters of the book consider the history of the act, definitions and interpretations of key words in the legislation, its current administrative organization and enforcement, experience under it (including improper wage determinations), and its costs and inflationary impact. A set of case studies are then presented to document the existence of improper and excessive wage determinations. Finally, the book concludes with a discussion of the original rationale of the Davis-Bacon Act and its …
