Undergraduate Research Journal
To better understand how these women perpetrators came to be, we must first look at what drove some women to support the National Socialist Party, then understand the roles women were to play in the German state along with how these perpetrators emerged from their predetermined roles. Next, we must explain how these women were selected and why they volunteered for their positions. Finally, we consider what crimes they committed and how they were punished after the war.

Foreign Affairs: Policy, Culture, and the Making of Love and War in Vietnam investigates the interplay between war and society leading to and during the Vietnam War. This project intertwines histories of foreign relations, popular culture, and gender and sexuality as lenses for understanding international power relations during the global Cold War more broadly. By examining sexual encounters between American service members and Vietnamese civilian women, this dissertation argues that relationships ranging from prostitution to dating, marriage, and rape played a significant role in the diplomacy, logistics, and international reception of the war. When it comes to understanding genocide, gender matters. This has not always been evident, and even today there are critics and skeptics. Indeed, when feminist scholars in Holocaust studies first began examining women’s experiences and gender questions, their scholarship was ignored or met with hostility by many academics and others, including some survivors. Opponents expressed various concerns, including the idea that gender research and analysis would “trivialize” or “politicize” the Holocaust, de-emphasize the centrality of anti-Semitism and racism to Nazi persecution,1 and promote “comparative victimhood or creat[e] unequal victims.”2 Studying the gendered dimensions of genocide, however, does not …
