Displays Of Power In English Tudor Painting, Laura Meisner 2017 University of Lynchburg

Displays Of Power In English Tudor Painting, Laura Meisner

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

History passes down the visages of Tudor monarchs and their contemporaries through paintings that attempt to show us more than their mere likenesses. The faces of these monarchs reveal not only individual physiognomies of appearance, but also characteristics of the times. Painting in Tudor England, up to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1485-1558) reflected, and at times contributed, to shifting political and social structures in England. Patrons exercised great influence on the kind of art created and brought into England, and a study of this and how patrons utilized art as a means of propaganda reveals the way that …

Hitler's Inconsistent Jazz Policy And How It Weakened His Control, Emmy Freedman 2017 James Madison University

Hitler's Inconsistent Jazz Policy And How It Weakened His Control, Emmy Freedman

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

In my paper, I discuss Hitler’s ironclad regime and how jazz music played a role in weakening it. Jazz music, with its democratic style and history, served as the antithesis to Hitler’s favored classical compositions. Although he tried to control the music and its supporters, Hitler never fully understood the genre and therefore was never able to stop its spread across Germany. In the paper, I also discuss how jazz music played into race relations and its distinctions among the social strata. Jazz music and Hitler’s opposition to it also had an impact on technology, the 1936 Olympics and propaganda.

Remembering The Great War: Writing And Publishing The Experiences Of Wwi, Ian A. Isherwood

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

The horrors and tragedies of the First World War produced some of the finest literature of the century: including Memoirs of an Infantry Officer; Goodbye to All That; the poetry of Wilfred Owen and Edward Thomas; and the novels of Ford Madox Ford. Collectively detailing every campaign and action, together with the emotions and motives of the men on the ground, these 'war books' are the most important set of sources on the Great War that we have. Through looking at the war poems, memoirs and accounts published after the First World War, Ian Andrew Isherwood addresses the key issues …

Hıristiyanlık, Aydınlanma Ve Kolonyalizm: Rusya, Kuzey Kafkasya’Da, 1550-1800, Michael Khodarkovsky 2017 Loyola University Chicago

Hıristiyanlık, Aydınlanma Ve Kolonyalizm: Rusya, Kuzey Kafkasya’Da, 1550-1800, Michael Khodarkovsky

History: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Zurich And The Birth Of French Surrealism, Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Paris has long been regarded as the artistic and literary capital of the world. Yet little known is the historical fact that Zurich played an equally fundamental and key role in the development of modern art, the birth of the avant-garde in literature and the arts, and the advent of French Surrealism.

Privilege As Blind Spot: Carl Jung, The Red Book, And The"Collective Unconscious", Laura L. M. Fair-Schulz, William E. Herman

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Carl Gustav Jung's monumental Liber Novus or The Red Book journal, begun in 1914 and published posthumously in 2009, presents the viewer with a dazzling array of painted images. 1 The project references both his accumulated and specialized knowledge as a theorist and practitioner of psychoanalysis, as well as the personal explorations of his own "subconscious" mind . It also reveals contextually his privilege of being able to undertake such a work.

A Chasm Between Two Vanguards: Near Encounters Of Russian Emigre Marxists And Dadaism In Switzerland, Bryan K. Herman, Axel Fair-Schulz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the year 1916, Switzerland was an island of peace in a sea of belligerence. Surrounded by Germany, France, and Italy, Switzerland was one of the few European counties to maintain its neutrality during the war that transformed Europe into a graveyard. It also became an ideal sanctuary for those who opposed the brutality and strident nationalism of World War I. Ever since the defeat of the 1905 Revolution in Russia, Switzerland had acted as an ideal place of refuge for members of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (the RSDLP, a Marxist party founded in 1898). This party sought …

From Rochel To Rose And Mendel To Max: First Name Americanization Patterns Among Twentieth-Century Jewish Immigrants To The United States, Jason H. Greenberg 2017 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

From Rochel To Rose And Mendel To Max: First Name Americanization Patterns Among Twentieth-Century Jewish Immigrants To The United States, Jason H. Greenberg

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

There has been a dearth of investigation into the distribution of and the alterations among Jewish given names. Whereas Jewish surnames are a popular topic of study, first names receive far less analysis. Because Jewish immigrants to the United States frequently changed their names, this thesis can serve as a guide to genealogists and other scholars seeking to trace the paths of Jewish immigrants from Europe. Data was drawn from about 1500 naturalization records from Brooklyn in order to determine the correspondences between the given names featured on passenger lists and their Americanized counterparts. More than three-quarters of surveyed immigrants …

The Fantastic Manifesto: Monstrosity Of Memory And Epiphany Of Selfhood In The Spirit Of The Beehive (1973), Layla Blodgett Carrillo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Spanish culture of storytelling suffered under the nearly forty-year dictatorship of Francisco Franco. The government-regulated cinema welcomed propaganda and melodrama, and denied the fantastic, the legendary, and the magical. These carefully manipulated histories, which served to romanticize the ideologies of the regime, also served to eulogize the delinquent and the depraved. In the early 1970s, at the heels of the collapse of Franco’s reign, the people of Spain bore witness to a new national cinema. The Spirit of the Beehive (1973), the feature debut from Victor Erice, exists at the threshold between a storied history of Spanish dictatorship and …
