Archaeological Investigations Of The South Blairsville Industry Archaeological District: A Functional And Landscape Analysis, Hannah E. Harvey

Theses and Dissertations (All)

The South Blairsville Industry Archaeological District near Blairsville, Pennsylvania includes the remains of an early-twentieth century plate glass factory and associated workers’ housing. Between 1903 and 1935 the factory produced plate glass for numerous applications, including storefront windows and automobile windshields. The factory and housing are linked to major themes of industrial change, the development of modern infrastructure, and the experiences of immigrant workers. An archaeological survey conducted within the district has identified extensive intact architectural remnants of the factory, as well as intact stratigraphy and house foundations within the workers’ housing. Analysis of the factory remains, soil profiles, artifacts ...

The Queen Anne Style In Houses Of Boone, Iowa: A Social And Economic Interpretation, Lori Osmus Kappmeyer 2017 Iowa State University

The Queen Anne Style In Houses Of Boone, Iowa: A Social And Economic Interpretation, Lori Osmus Kappmeyer

Lori O. Kappmeyer

One of the premises of this thesis was that the way in which the Queen Anne style was manifested in Boone, Iowa was a reflection of the social and economic characteristics of that town in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Queen Anne style was the dominant style used for American houses built between 1880 and 1900, when Boone experienced its greatest building boom. While it would be reasonable to expect that many of the houses in Boone would be in the Queen Anne style, surprisingly few houses in Boone are full expressions of that style. A popular ...

Embodying Rhythm Nation: Multimodal Hip Hop Dance As A Site For Adolescent Social-Emotional And Political Development, Lauren M. Roygardner

All Graduate Works by Year: Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This exploratory study employed qualitative methodology, specifically values analysis, to learn more about how being involved within Hip hop dance communities positively relates to adolescent development. Adolescence was defined herein as ages 13-23. The study investigated Hip hop dance communities in terms of cultural expertise (i.e. novice, intermediate and advanced/expert) to look specifically at dance narratives (i.e. peak experience narratives and “I dance because” essays) and hip hop dance performances. The primary purpose of this dissertation was to (1) explore how adolescents use multimodal Hip hop dance discourse for social-emotional development and critical consciousness, and to (2 ...

The Possibilities Of The Video Game Exhibition, Elizabeth Legere 2762328

School of Arts & Sciences Theses

This paper is an examination of video games as an artistic medium, and of their current presentation in art museums like the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as an attempt to come up with better modes of presentation for them within a museum space. Using a general understanding of video game theory and aesthetics, it might be possible to begin to look at solutions to the issues posed by current methods of presentation and interpretation, and to examine whether video games’ complicated aesthetic and artistic importance can be better highlighted by a new mode of display ...

Visual Culture Project: Confederate War Etchings: Searching For Arms By Adalbert Johann Volck, Lynn B. Hatcher 2017 Gettysburg College

Visual Culture Project: Confederate War Etchings: Searching For Arms By Adalbert Johann Volck, Lynn B. Hatcher

Student Publications

Adalbert Johann Volck’s 1861 sketch of Union soldiers, “Searching for Arms,” represents a substantial contribution to the narrative about gender relations during the American Civil War. This simple, small sketch offers the observer a window into the past. It is a collision of symbols and meaning—from gender to war to the household—all wrapped up in one image. This is a portrait sketch of a woman being invaded in her domestic, private sphere, revealing so much about gender relations during the time. The mistress herself seemed to embody a vast range of sentiments such as anger, fear, frailty ...

The Capitalist-Marxist Dichotomy Within The Hudson River School: Conceptualizing American Property Through The Career Of Worthington Whittredge (1820-1910), Astrid Tvetenstrand 2017 Sotheby's Institute of Art

The Capitalist-Marxist Dichotomy Within The Hudson River School: Conceptualizing American Property Through The Career Of Worthington Whittredge (1820-1910), Astrid Tvetenstrand

MA Theses

The Hudson River School artistic movement has been regarded as one of the foremost examples of American painting. These images of landscape have embodied the spirit of the United States and its perpetually changing relationship with nature. While these nineteenth-century paintings are consistently analyzed through the lenses of Romanticism and Idealism, there is a lacuna in the narrative which accentuates economic and political philosophies as important influencers of these works. The impact of capitalism and Marxism is identifiable through not only the country’s economic system, but also the nation’s artistic movements. These theories are well-defined by paintings highlighting ...
