Le Mythe Comme Patrie Littéraire De L’Écrivain Migrant, 2018 Tulane University
Le Mythe Comme Patrie Littéraire De L’Écrivain Migrant, Erika Mandarino
Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture
La Ciudad Como Espacio De La Marginalidad: Un Acercamiento Crítico A Un Oso Rojo, 2018 University of California, Los Angeles Extension
La Ciudad Como Espacio De La Marginalidad: Un Acercamiento Crítico A Un Oso Rojo, Mariana Pensa
South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Development Of A Literary Dispositif: Convening Diasporan, Blues, And Cosmopolitan Lines Of Inquiry To Reveal The Cultural Dialogue Among Giuseppe Ungaretti, Langston Hughes, And Antonio D’Alfonso, 2018 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College
Development Of A Literary Dispositif: Convening Diasporan, Blues, And Cosmopolitan Lines Of Inquiry To Reveal The Cultural Dialogue Among Giuseppe Ungaretti, Langston Hughes, And Antonio D’Alfonso, Anna Ciamparella
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to create a literary dialogue among the Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti, the African American author Langston Hughes, and the Quebecois writer Antonio D’Alfonso. Giuseppe Ungaretti and Langston Hughes were more or less contemporaries. Ungaretti was born in 1888 and Hughes in 1902, and both were active in modernist movements that shaped the literary history of their own countries. D’Alfonso was born in Canada about half a center after Ungaretti and Hughes. Besides significant generational differences, these three authors also underwent personal and intellectual experiences that shaped their writing in seemingly incomparable ways. While a traditional comparative approach …
Drama As Dream: Sophoclean Tragedy And The Cult Of Asclepius, 2018 University of New Mexico
Drama As Dream: Sophoclean Tragedy And The Cult Of Asclepius, Molly C. Mata
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis explores tragic drama as a corresponding ritual to the incubation ritual in the cult of Asclepius and theorizes that this ritual is psychologically cathartic and healing. I argue that in Ajax and Philoctetes, Sophocles marks this cathartic ritual through nosological language, setting, and social context. In my first chapter, I explore Sophocles’ use of the language of madness (mania) and illness (nosos) in Ajax to show the exacerbation of the audience’s psychological state. Next, I show that catharsis is achieved through the negotiation and subsequent burial of Ajax. In my second chapter, I argue that Sophocles uses both …
Negotiation And The Construction Of Intimacy In The Letters Between Fronto And Marcus Aurelius, 2018 University of New Mexico
Negotiation And The Construction Of Intimacy In The Letters Between Fronto And Marcus Aurelius, Sarah C. Keith
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This project analyzes the letters between Marcus Cornelius Fronto and his student Marcus Aurelius as works of literature, rather than merely sites for historical mining. The letters, I argue, contain carefully constructed tropes of rhetoric and feature intentional polish that serve as opportunities for discussion about the virtues of philosophy and rhetoric during the Second Sophistic. Topics of discussions between both parties range between the imagery of sleep, and intimate spaces, like bedrooms, to substantive allusions to Plato’s philosophy and his dialogue Phaedrus. By looking beyond the identification of concrete names and dates to the literary, referential, and personal world …

Joe's Laundry: Using Critical Incidents To Develop Intercultural And Foreign Language Competence In Study Abroad And Beyond, Tama L. Engelking
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
The development of intercultural competence and foreign language skills in study abroad and the foreign language (FL) classroom is often seen as an either/or proposition due to lack of time, training or the availability of materials in the target language. The Critical Incident method (CI) provides an example of an intercultural training tool that can link these competencies in ways that are developmentally appropriate for the FL and IC levels of the students. This method uses authentic intercultural mishaps to develop critical thinking skills as students reflect on the cultural values and attitudes underlying the experience. Drawing on research in …

L’Étranger À Travers L’Arabe: Meursault Contre-Enquête De Kamel Daoud Comme Relecture Postcoloniale D’Albert Camus, Carlos Gonzalez
Senior Theses and Projects
In this paper, I discuss the problem of naming and namelessness in Albert Camus’ The Stranger and in Kamel Daoud’s The Meursault Investigation as a way to explore postcolonial discourse surrounding names as a form of othering. In The Stranger, Camus chooses not to name the Arab that falls victim to Meursault, thereby setting into motion the narrative of The Meursault Investigation by Daoud, which acts as a retelling and response to Camus’ work. I argue that Camus’ decision not to name the victim, preferring instead to label him the Arab throughout the story, is a fundamentally orientalist act …
Perceptions Concurrentes De La Liberté Chez Sartre Et Camus Dans Le Théâtre Existentialiste, 2018 Trinity College, Hartford Connecticut
Perceptions Concurrentes De La Liberté Chez Sartre Et Camus Dans Le Théâtre Existentialiste, Kendall Hall
Senior Theses and Projects
This thesis compares two existential writers, Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, and their perception of freedom through the medium of theatre. By comparing two plays written around the same time period, Caligula (1944) and Huis Clos (1944), and by examining aspects of theatre including the “mise en scène,” stage direction or action, and the voice of the actors, I show how their greatest point of contention is their definition of freedom and how they set up artificial situations (“situations-limites”) to articulate human freedom. Through a variety of supporting materials including theoretical texts by the two authors and secondary sources …

In this essay, I examine two French translations of Edgar Allen Poe’s poem “The Raven”—the 1865 translation by Charles Baudelaire and the 1875 translation by Stéphane Mallarmé, which is accompanied by a series of illustrations by impressionist painter Édouard Manet. I argue that through their translations of “The Raven”, these two French poets enter into a competition not only with Poe, but also with each other. I find evidence of this competition in the translations themselves and also in the extra-textual content that supplements each translation. My argument is informed by secondary scholarship surrounding Poe, Baudelaire, and Mallarmé and by …

Poetry of Roe 8
The occasion for the writing of these poems was activism surrounding the controversial highway known as the Roe 8 extension in the areas of Cockburn and Fremantle in Western Australia. Planned in the 1950s, Roe 8 is contentious for a number of reasons, including extraordinary political deals over funding, undue process regarding environmental reporting, lack of a business case, inadequate noise and traffic modelling, erasure of Indigenous heritage sites, and clearing of the sensitive Beeliar wetlands and Coolbellup banksia woodlands which were designated a Threatened Ecological Community in 2016. During the summer of 2016/2017 contractors started …
Alternate Facts And Reality Effects In Antoine Bello’S Roman Américain, 2018 The Ohio State University
Alternate Facts And Reality Effects In Antoine Bello’S Roman Américain, Jennifer Willging
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Like several of Antoine Bello’s eight other novels to date, Roman américain contains a staggering array of minute details, which includes the names of dozens of fictional characters, businesses, associations, institutions, locations, and publications. These fictional proper nouns are intertwined throughout the novel with dozens of real ones, and this promiscuous intermixing contributes to the careful construction of a fictional world that rivals the real one in all its complexity. In this essay I examine Bello’s masterful production in Roman américain of verisimilitude, which he creates largely but not exclusively though his exploitation of the documentary fiction genre. I then …
