True Love Waits: A Barthesian Reading Of Desire And Delay In Flaubert And James, Yasmin Patel 2023 Claremont Colleges

True Love Waits: A Barthesian Reading Of Desire And Delay In Flaubert And James, Yasmin Patel

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis explores the theme of amorous waiting in the literature of Gustave Flaubert and Henry James. Roland Barthes' definition of waiting, as articulated in A Lover's Discourse, is used as a tool to examine the waiting conditions of characters in Madame Bovary, The Beast in the Jungle, and The Ambassadors. By using the Barthesian framework, this thesis identifies and analyzes different forms of gender-based waiting and their distinctive consequences. However, it also notes that the primary texts further complicate the relationship between romantic waiting, gender, and autonomy. Ultimately, this analysis shows us that amorous waiting goes beyond a simple …

Desalination And Development: Locating The Missing Masses In Dakar’S Water Network, Marina Riad 2023 Scripps College

Desalination And Development: Locating The Missing Masses In Dakar’S Water Network, Marina Riad

Scripps Senior Theses

The introduction of desalination technology to the water network in Dakar, Senegal marks a monumental change in how state and commercial interests aim to solve systemic problems using novel technologies. Desalination aims to transform the ocean surrounding Dakar into potable water, a vital resource in the growing metropolis. However, this desalination project must integrate itself within a network of social, historical, political, commercial, and ecological influences shaping the role of desalination in urban Dakar. With millions of dollars and an entire ocean mobilized towards solving Dakar’s water problems, it may come as a surprise that this project will only provide …

Teaching French As A Foreign Language In Multilingual And Anglophone Contexts: The Experiences Of Teachers In Nigeria And Ghana, Michael Akinpelu, Stella Afi Makafui Yegblemenawo 2023 University of Regina, Canada

Teaching French As A Foreign Language In Multilingual And Anglophone Contexts: The Experiences Of Teachers In Nigeria And Ghana, Michael Akinpelu, Stella Afi Makafui Yegblemenawo

Educational Considerations

Nigeria and Ghana are two Anglophone countries in West Africa that have adopted the teaching of the French language in their education systems because of their proximity to francophone countries and the necessity for regional integration. Whereas the language has gained some official status in the national curriculum (National Policy on Education) in Nigeria and made a required subject at some levels of education, French continues to enjoy a privileged status in Ghana but without an official status yet. Using a comparative approach, this paper explores the language policy in favour of the French language and its teaching at the …

Acquisition Of The Liaison In French As A Foreign Language: Difficulty And Remedy, Saad Haddad

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

“Liaison is a phenomenon that aroused and continues to arouse a large number of researchers' interest because of its complexity and diversity. The studies on this subject often concern when and how different native and non-native speakers perform or do not perform the liaison in French. The difficulty posed by the phenomenon of liaison is even more evident among non-native speakers for whom such correspondence does not exist in the mother tongue”. (Mårtensson, 2013 : p 3). This study aims to map the difficulties of liaison encountered by Arabic-speaking learners in French as a Foreign language class. The results of …

Problems In Uttering French Nasal Vowels For Jordanian Learners Of French As A Foreign Language, Farouq Abu Duhair, Nail Munasel, Samer Al-Hamouri

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

"Un bon vin blanc" (A fine white wine), is a French sentence in which every French nasal vowel that will be discussed in this article: [œ̃ ], [ɔ̃], [ɛ̃], [ɑ̃] is represented. Nasal vowels are « produced by lowering the velum and allowing the air to pass outward through the nose » (Halle, Morris, et Clements 1983). This phenomenon is called nasalization. If students of French as a foreign language are not able to produce such nasal sounds, they will not be able to properly pronounce these French vowels. Students face several sorts of difficulties whilst trying to utter French …

Understanding The Impact Of Social Media During The Tunisian Revolution For The Lgbtqia+ Tunisian Community, Jared L. Bisbikis 2022 University of San Francisco

Understanding The Impact Of Social Media During The Tunisian Revolution For The Lgbtqia+ Tunisian Community, Jared L. Bisbikis

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Tunisian Revolution of 2011 was significantly influenced by the widespread use of social media platforms which aided in the advancement and eventual overthrow of the regime of President Ben Ali. With the newfound power of social media, the once invisible LGBTQIA+ community within Tunisia began to utilize social media to advance Tunisia's social and political culture regarding LGBTQIA+ advocacy. LGBTQIA+ Tunisian and Middle Eastern history reveals that French colonization was the most significant factor in creating anti-LGBTQIA+ laws and culture within the region. In Tunisia, this resulted in the Penal Code of 1913: Article 230, which criminalizes sodomy between …

Malencontres Coloniaux Et Bâtardises Postcoloniales. Pour Une Poétique Du Fait Colonial Et De L'Hybridité Chez Tierno Monénembo, Antoine Marie Zacharie Habumukiza

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Dirassat

Andre Gide or Bifid Writing

This study on the relationship between space and writing in Gide aims to show that this category of experience, quite often considered in its apparent stasis as sterile and less relevant, and having suffered unfairly, in the innumerable works that have been done on the work and life of Gide, of a certain marginalization, fulfills and fully accomplishes its role of revealing the great themes deeply and firmly anchored in the psyche of the writer.

Analysis of "BEN" in the Story of Arabic -Speaking Migrants Working in France

We propose here to examine in the discourse of a group of Arabic-speaking migrants (working in the North of France for about twenty years), the functioning of one of the markers that the speaker has the possibility of inserting in an utterance where, often for reasons of difficulty of formulation but also for different reasons, the spoken chain has been interrupted. Almost all of these phenomena are part of a group of elements called “conversation structuring markers” by Roulet et al. (1985), “discourse support” by F. Deloffore …
