University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, I will detail the film making techniques that my crew and I employed while making AM800, my thesis film at the University of New Orleans. I will detail the creative and technical steps we took, from the earliest stages of idea conceptualization to the final phases of post-production and screening. During my recounting of this process, I will discuss our creative goals, the challenges that we faced while achieving these goals, and the resulting product's effectiveness as a narrative short film. The quality of the final product will be gauged through the results of test screenings …
Wonderment : Chinese Ink Paintings / Video / Projection / Installation / Soundscape, 2013 Lingnan University
Wonderment : Chinese Ink Paintings / Video / Projection / Installation / Soundscape, Anna Glynn
Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues
A major component of Wonderment is the first showing of work done as part of my multimedia MEOAW Project: My Extraordinary Onomatopoeic Animal World. Onomatopoeic words mimic the sounds they represent; the sound of the word imitates the sound the object makes. The words are creations of our human minds and in different cultures and languages the words for the same sounds differ. The Lingnan University community responded enthusiastically to my call for volunteers to participate in the MEAOW project. I have spent many happy hours collecting and recording sound and video from members of this wonderful, culturally-diverse population.

Emerging Views On Making: Fibre Graduates Reflect On Their Practice, 2013 SelectedWorks
Emerging Views On Making: Fibre Graduates Reflect On Their Practice, Kathleen Morris
Kathleen Morris
This narrative research examines the ways in which craft is conceptualized from the perspective of five recent graduates from the Material Art and Design Fibre Program at a prominent Canadian art and design university. Recognizing the cultural currents that have excised acts of making, including Western de-industrialization and abundant access to offshore labour markets, this research looks at the role of maker within a new societal context. A nascent theoretical platform for craft, shaped by artists and academics, counters a dearth of voices that has characterized the field’s history. Here, craft is posited as a methodology, characterized by embodiment, subjectivity, …

Oniroscopios: Metadispositivos Cinematográficos Y Posiciones Espectadoriales En No Te Mueras Sin Decirme Adónde Vas Y La Sonámbula, Juan Ignacio Munoz
Alambique.

Suk Mun, Sophia Law
Research Expression through Art : Visual Studies Faculty

Course Syllabus (Fa13) Coli 211 Literature & Psychology: "Power, The Subject, And Technological Rationality", Christopher Southward
Comparative Literature Faculty Scholarship
Course Description and Objectives:
In this course, we will examine mechanisms of power and the processes by which these produce categories of subjectivity. Theoretically speaking, we will begin by considering these processes at the level of society and then dwell on their human experience at the level of the psyche. Here, we will aim to discover processes by which the subject reproduces conditions of domination by power at the level of psychic experience. Power-practices assume their condition of possibility by positing, on the one hand, that the category of the subject is a priori existent and, on the other, that …

A Matter Of Regionalism: Remembering Brandon Teena And Willa Cather At The Nebraska History Museum, Carly S. Woods, Joshua P. Ewalt, Sara J. Baker
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
In 2010–2011, the Nebraska History Museum featured two temporary exhibits: “We the People: the Nebraskan Viewpoint” and “Willa Cather: A Matter of Appearances.” We argue the public memories of Brandon Teena and Willa Cather contained in the exhibits are distanced from regional politics when articulated alongside the nostalgic regionalist rhetoric of the Nebraska History Museum. Specifically, both exhibits not only discipline the memory of trans* performance within problematic material and symbolic contexts, but also place these memories within a rhetoric of regional optimism that has critical consequences for restricting counter-public formation. In performing this reading, the essay argues that critical …

Intertextuality : A Residency Project At Lingnan University 2013 = 互為文本, Chun Fai Chow, Michelle Lee, Ivy Ma
Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues
The intertextual works articulate their meanings through the process of creation but not through the artists alone. The significances and meanings of the artworks are produced by the copying and referencing of texts that already exist. Creators of these 'new' works forgo the identity as an author, the tracing of originality and the following of reading habits and traditions are to be violated. The process of reading, deciphering and judging of the artworks injects new meanings into the original texts written by the old masters; any blockages or fragmentation that happens in the process will further promote the conceptualisation and …

Using the minimalist aesthetic of pictograms, I constructed a series of silhouettes to represent some of the issues an everyday American may come across. The idea behind each silhouette was initially documented in a scrapbook. Eventually these images were transformed into vector images in Adobe Illustrator and then cut out of sheets of masonite into physical beings. These “stick men” were then sanded down and painted in a variety of colors in order to emphasize the significance behind each one. The outcome of the project was a population of “stick-men” that could stand on their own or together as a …

Because I Am Not Here, Selected Second Life-Based Art Case Studies. Subjectivity, Autoempathy And Virtual World Aesthetics, Francisco Gerardo Toledo Ramírez
Francisco Gerardo Toledo Ramírez
Second Life is a virtual world accessible through the Internet in which users create objects and spaces, and interact socially through 3D avatars. Certain artists use the platform as a medium for art creation, using the aesthetic, spatial, temporal and technological features of SL as raw material. Code and scripts applied to animate and manipulate objects, avatars and spaces are important in this sense. These artists, their avatars and artwork in SL are at the centre of my research questions: what does virtual existence mean and what is its purpose when stemming from aesthetic exchange in SL?
Through a qualitative …

The concept of “Life Reporting” is a completely new idea, at least in terms of how I have experienced it. In today’s world of blogs and social networking, it is essential for broadcast journalists to embrace their own lives in the same world of professional and ethical reporting. As I describe my experience of St. Thomas Aquinas’ Jubilee, I have no choice but to provide the context and build-up of this intense passion toward my overarching point. Working through all the communities of which I have been a part, from attending St. Luke Catholic Church all the way to the …

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Universities are a training ground for the people who will go on to revitalize and reinvent the industries that they enter. Journalism is one of many industries rapidly changing with the pace of technology growth and is susceptible to influence from young, energetic professionals as they leave school. That influence is especially needed on forays into digital publishing, especially publishing on iPads and other tablet computers.
Student publications on university campuses are a key part of preparing students for that responsibility. By exploring readership habits, effective multimedia use, and successes and failures of other digital publications, students can learn to …

Visual Rhetoric Through The Years, Leah Kind
Rhetoric Unit
This exercise gives students an introduction to some of the language and terminology of visual rhetoric in a brief teacher-guided discussion. Following the discussion, students, in small groups, will find both a vintage print advertisement and a current print ad within the same general category and examine how different forms of appeals have evolved through time, how ads now target their specific audiences, and, in general, how ads have changed, and why. Groups will present their findings to the class. Having the opportunity to see what in advertising has changed (as well as what has not changed) will allow students …

Senior Honors Projects
During the late 19th century longer rolls of celluloid photographic film, and motion picture cameras were first introduced, which allowed for the capture of rapid sequences of still images at a relatively high speeds. The first films shown to audiences on a larger screen, although rudimentary, caused people to gasp or run from the cinema, as they believed the images on screen were real. As technology increased feature films progressed from only showing a simple static event to creating full stories spanning over various sets and containing multiple characters. With the advent of sound, filmmakers were given another tool …
