Marxist And Socialist Feminism, Elisabeth Armstrong 2020 Smith College

Marxist And Socialist Feminism, Elisabeth Armstrong

Study of Women and Gender: Faculty Publications

Beginning in the 1840s, Marxism has analyzed unpaid, reproductive “women’s work” as an integral part of capitalism. Marxist feminism historicizes reproduction in relation to production to better understand women’s exploitation and oppression in capitalism. Marxist feminism also theorizes revolutionary subjectivity and possibilities for an anti-capitalist future. Particularly important to Marxist feminism are its theories of imperialism and primitive accumulation, or theft, of land, resources and women’s unpaid labor to the reproduction of lives and generations.

Sex At Any Cost: How Gender Inequality, Capitalism, And Pornography Are Driving A $99 Billion Industry, Gina Vucci

Senior Theses and Capstone Projects

There are more slaves today than at any other time in human history. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that there are more than 40 million slaves worldwide. This paper accompanies a 6-part webinar series of the same title that explores how gender inequality, capitalism, and pornography are driving a $99 billion illegal industry. The paper begins by defining what human trafficking is and includes both forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation. Six primary forms of human trafficking are explored, including domestic servitude, bonded labor, child slavery, sex trafficking, and forced marriage. Next, the paper explores who the victims of ...

I Go Gray.Com: A Photographic Celebration And Oral History Of Gray-Haired Women, Tabitha Deering 2019 Dominican University of California

I Go Gray.Com: A Photographic Celebration And Oral History Of Gray-Haired Women, Tabitha Deering

Senior Theses and Capstone Projects

This paper describes the creation of the igogray.com website which celebrates gray-haired women by featuring their oral histories and showcasing the aesthetic beauty of gray hair through fine art photography. The website is a platform to listen to what gray-haired women have to say on the subject of gray hair, and to encourage the audience to take a closer look at gray-haired women. When the author stopped dyeing her gray hair she experienced an ageist shift in society’s perceptions toward her, and she wondered if other graying women were having the same types of experiences, so this project ...

Called To Serve: Understanding The Role Of The Woman’S Mission Decision Narrative In Latter-Day Saint Culture And Belief, Rachel Ross 2019 Utah State University

Called To Serve: Understanding The Role Of The Woman’S Mission Decision Narrative In Latter-Day Saint Culture And Belief, Rachel Ross

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports

In my thesis I explore the role of mission decision narratives of women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Before 2012, women could not serve missions until age 21. Once the minimum age was changed to 19 in October of 2012, many more women were able to serve on mission as the opportunity was less likely to disrupt their education or romantic relationships. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, missions are seen as a priesthood duty for men but a matter of choice for women. This ability to choose and the narrative that follows ...

Rape Culture.Docx, Lynell Hodge 2019 University of Central Florida

Rape Culture.Docx, Lynell Hodge

Lynell Hodge, EdD

Rape culture is a highly contested topic often framed by sexual assault as a central focus. As result, when feminists and social justice activists attempt to have a more expansive conversation to include coercive relationships or street harassment it isn’t always received well. In some cases the conversation is labeled as divisive. Having a rape culture discussion can be already contentious, there is also a subgroup of women who lean anti-rape culture rhetoric. Rape culture requires an understanding of the normalization of violence due to the pervasiveness of sexism. As a result, exploring why women deny rape culture’s ...

The Segregation Of Religion: How Othering Influences Society’S Narrative Understanding About The Symbiotic Relationship Among Racism, Sexism, And The Church, Ajanet Rountree 2019 George Mason University

The Segregation Of Religion: How Othering Influences Society’S Narrative Understanding About The Symbiotic Relationship Among Racism, Sexism, And The Church, Ajanet Rountree

Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

The social dependence on the sociology of male spiritual leadership is substantial. This dependence accomplishes two ideas: neutralizes the feminine experience and obviates the anthropological implications of religion in the perpetuation of oppression and subjugation. When considering racism and sexism in religion, specifically as they relate to the Black Christian church, a dismissal of accusations and assertions occurs by yielding to the context of the social era. This paper seeks to further clarify the position of women, who pushed against the grain of the gendered and racialized spaces of their churches and communities, as they sought to establish human rights ...

Firing Queer Teachers From Catholic Schools: Ethical And Theological Considerations, Ish Ruiz 2019 Graduate Theological Union

Firing Queer Teachers From Catholic Schools: Ethical And Theological Considerations, Ish Ruiz

Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Since 2007, there have been over 90 cases of queer employees fired from Catholic institutions – many of which include dismissals of queer educators from Catholic schools. As religious institutions, Catholic schools are constitutionally protected by a ministerial exception that offers legal immunity to Catholic educational institutions that fire queer employees (which are sometimes considered “ministers” by the courts). The ministerial exception is an extension of the institution’s right to religious freedom to promote its doctrine though its schools. Although this right to discriminate is legally protected, from a moral standpoint, one may argue that the exercise of one human ...

Wounds, Remembrance, Sutures: Performing Existence In Times Of Gore Capitalism, Christina Baker 2019 University of Dayton

Wounds, Remembrance, Sutures: Performing Existence In Times Of Gore Capitalism, Christina Baker

Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Since 2006, the initiation of Mexico’s “War on Drugs,” the nation has experienced horrific violence despite increased militarization of its streets. As cartels have deepened their networks, controlling the northern border states and beyond, (random) acts of violence have become an endemic crisis. In this Mexico, one where a new daily vernacular constantly evolves to articulate brutal acts and the state has routinely espoused a rhetoric of ignorance, performer-activists have turned to creative initiatives to combat efforts that invisibilize and derealize victims. From her work, Gore Capitalism, in which she explores the human body as commodity and casualty in ...

The White Supremacy Aesthetic: A Racial Capitalist Intervention On Instagram, Jordyn Sheldon 2019 Queen's University - Kingston, Ontario

The White Supremacy Aesthetic: A Racial Capitalist Intervention On Instagram, Jordyn Sheldon

Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Social media is a ubiquitous aspect of the modern world. The globalization of communication has transformed the ways in which we interact as human beings. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that this technology is not neutral ground. Social media are platforms upon which relationships of power are negotiated. They also exist within structures of power. Where Twitter engages users in writing short texts and Facebook allows users to post or share almost anything, Instagram, owned by Facebook, is the social media platform which focuses primarily on images, photographs and other visuals. This format has powerful implications when one considers ...

Faking The News: Antiwar Activists, The Italo-Ethiopian War, And The Practice Of Human Rights, Caroline Waldron Merithew 2019 University of Dayton

Faking The News: Antiwar Activists, The Italo-Ethiopian War, And The Practice Of Human Rights, Caroline Waldron Merithew

Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

In “Faking the News,” I bring past and present together to underscore lessons already learned by antifascist antiwar activists from the 1930s. These activists used, what they termed, "Authentic News," to combat the propaganda Benito Mussolini's regime was making up about the Italo-Ethiopian war. How might knowing about how people faked the news, and faked out fascism, in the past shape current and future human rights actions and help us go against the grain today for a better world tomorrow?

Marching For Change: Intersectional Coalition Building, Counter Voices, And Collective Action At The U.S. Women’S March On Washington And Beyond, Wendy A. Burns-Ardolino

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

This study of the U.S. Women’s March on Washington engages a feminist cultural studies lens to examine my own participant observations and multiple lived accounts published by women in open blogs, op-ed pieces, and online articles to produce a critical analysis of collective resistance and action. Photos from the march offer a gritty core sample of American cultural identities in terms of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, ethnicity and religion with marchers standing shoulder to shoulder in coalition against misogyny, heterosexism, white supremacy, xenophobia, and the very real threat to recognizing women’s rights as human rights. Drawing ...

Calling The Tune: Impact Of Domestic Worker’S Earnings On Intra-Household Gender Relations, Gul Ozyegin

Gul Ozyegin

Before the Servant Project began its activities, on the initiative of the editor of this book, the long term history of domestic service was still in its beginning stage. This volume is the first wide-ranging attempt to determine the role of domestic workers both in past and present times. Domestic service was of major importance in the multi-secular process of urbanization and socio-economic development of European societies. Today, domestic workers (mainly women) represent an important component of international labour migrations to Western countries. Instead of disappearing, as expected for a long time, paid domestic work is currently experiencing a kind ...

Journal of International Women's Studies

In spite of the significant roles European women played in the administration of colonial Nigeria, only a handful of them have been given adequate attention. Against this backdrop, the contributions of Miss Jane McCotter to the development of the Egba Healthcare delivery system, were examined. Relying and critically evaluating extant literature, newspapers, interviews and archival records, the authors demonstrate that she made her marks, not only on the quality work she put into the field of nursing and midwifery, but also, on how she commanded attention as the proprietress of a midwifery school and a proficient Structural Engineer, who supervised ...

From “Hot Mommies” To Differently Abled Mothers: Diverse Portrayals Of Mothering In An Indonesian Women’S Magazine, A. Priyatna, L.M. Rahayu, M. Subekti

Journal of International Women's Studies

Mothering and motherhood are among two key components of the construction of femininity. This study examined how mothering is embodied and performed by various women in Femina, Indonesia’s most popular women’s magazine, which targets primarily middle- or upper-middle-class women in their twenties and thirties. The sample set consisted of 17 portrayals of women as mothers in Femina during the years 2015 and 2016. We found that Femina depicts various ways in which women can function as mothers while remaining contented and balancing their different roles; in doing so, the magazine encourages a feminine and feminist celebration of mothering ...

Facebook, which revolutionized social networking, offers solid platforms for women freely to express and give life to their opinions on any subject they desire, from fashion to human rights, feminism to politics. As a result, a number of issues have arisen regarding the safety of social exposure, chief amongst them being the preservation of privacy.
