When Ice Isn’T Slippery, Alyssa Witbeck Alexander 2020 Utah State University

When Ice Isn’T Slippery, Alyssa Witbeck Alexander

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is the start of what I envision to be a full-length memoir that addresses themes of perfectionism and sacrifice. I begin with an introductory chapter, then move into three chapters that highlight different elements of my life that are affected by these themes. I begin exploring childhood, passion for figure skating, perfectionism, Mormonism, and my first romantic relationship. The next chapter shows ways in which this commitment to perfectionism and sacrifice results in a severe eating disorder, and the ways in which that affects me, my family, and my relationship with figure skating. The final chapter chronologically covers ...

The Forest, The Trees, The Bark, The Pith: An Intensive Look At The Circulation Rates Of Primary Texts In Ten Major Literature Areas At The University Of Oregon Libraries, Jeff D. Staiger

Charleston Library Conference

This poster looks at the circulation rate for literary primary texts, which constitute a unique area of collecting in academic libraries: while they do not in most cases meet immediate research needs, it is assumed that libraries ought to acquire them, for reasons including future research needs, preservation of the cultural record, and the ability of members of the intellectual community to stay current, those these remain primarily tacit. The circulation trends of contemporary literary works in ten areas of literature (English, American, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin American, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian) over the past twenty years at the ...

Preservice English Teachers’ Evolving Conceptions Of 21st-Century Writing, Amber Jensen 2020 Brigham Young University

Preservice English Teachers’ Evolving Conceptions Of 21st-Century Writing, Amber Jensen

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

This study used stimulated-recall interviews throughout four secondary English preservice teachers’ (PSTs) semester-long student teaching internships to examine how critical teaching moments shaped their evolving conceptions of 21st-century writing. The article first describes the participants’ collective definitions of features and experiences of 21st-century writing in the ELA classroom, focusing specifically on how they understood digital and multimodal composition. It then examines two case studies that demonstrate how PSTs’ teaching experiences destabilized, challenged, and contradicted their emerging definitions. Findings suggest that English educators may engage PSTs in conceptualizing nuanced and flexible 21st-century writing pedagogies as they construct field experiences as reflective ...

Comparing Human Communication And Animal Communication, Firas Ismail 2020 St. Cloud State University

Comparing Human Communication And Animal Communication, Firas Ismail

ESL for Academic Purposes

What is language? People might say that humans are not the only living beings that use language. The types of communication that animals use is definitely useful and does meet some of the same goals as human speech, but it is not truly language. What are these differences in communication that separate humans from animals, and why are they important. This is the topic of the unit, which encourages not only practical applications of language use (Vocabulary, Reading, Writing, Grammar Usage, Speaking, and Listening), but also critical thinking on the concept of language itself. This unit tries to encourage metalinguistic ...

Dichotomy Of Fan: A Snapshot Of Interaction, Participation, And Belonging In Modern Fandom Culture, Christina Masucci

Kean Quest

Welcome to the summary of my M.A. thesis website, DichotomyofFan.com, whose full title is, as you saw on the previous page, Dichotomy of Fan: A Snapshot of Interaction, Participation, and Belonging in Modern Fandom Culture. As I believe it would be a bit much to dump everything on the site—there are 15 interviews and that’s only one section—into this summary, I’ll be including a preview of each main section of the project. Speaking of, there are a lot of ways I can (and have) introduced this project to people. Instead of the default Surprised-Pikachu-meme-How-Do-I-Even-Explain-This ...

Enacting Rhetorical Listening: A Process To Support Students’ Engagement With Challenging Course Readings, Jessica Rivera-Mueller 2020 Utah State University

Enacting Rhetorical Listening: A Process To Support Students’ Engagement With Challenging Course Readings, Jessica Rivera-Mueller

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Many educators assign course readings to purposefully enlarge students’ perspectives. In doing so, though, educators may face a range of behaviors—reluctance, resistance, avoidance, disengagement—from students who feel that such readings negatively press upon their prior knowledge, belief systems, or educational goals. This teaching challenge is often present for social justice educators. However, “rhetorical listening,” a rhetorical theory developed by Ratcliffe (2005), is a pedagogical tool that can help shift students’ understandings of and expectations for the activity of reading, thereby creating a learning environment that supports meaningful engagement with challenging course readings. In this article, the author outlines ...

T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, And Literary Tradition, Nicholas J. Odom 2020 University of Central Florida

T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, And Literary Tradition, Nicholas J. Odom

The Macksey Journal

T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound significantly influenced modernist poetry through publishing their respective poetic works as well as editing and promoting the work of fellow modernists and inspiring developments in 20th century Anglophone literary criticism like New Criticism. However, despite both poets’ prominence in Anglo-American modernist poetry, their shared interest in situating their works in literary tradition, and with special emphasis on the classical tradition, through erudite allusion distinguishes their understanding of “modernism” from that of other Anglo-American modernists like William Carlos Williams and Virginia Woolf. This article approaches Eliot’s and Pound’s participation in Anglo-American literary modernist ...
