Hallyu’S Media Hybridization: A Case Study Of A Korean Series Remake For Thai Audiences, Nutchapon Nimitphuwanai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Korean culture has currently spread to many countries and benefited both the economy and society, but it also has the potential to integrate with those cultures. Hallyu is centered to the export of cultural products in order to further the spread of its culture throughout the world. Thailand is one of the countries that has been influenced by Hallyu, and the impact on Thai television has not exemplified cultural imperialism but hybridization. Hallyu, on the other hand, is not a single direction, but a composite of mixed and local reconstructions. Korean media imports are also incorporated into the local. Certain …

Korean Migration And Hallyu: The Emergence Of Korean Celebrities In The Philippine Entertainment Industry, Rose Carmelle Lacuata

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The Philippines is home to many Korean migrants, who started migrating to the Philippines in the 1990s for economic purposes, and later for educational purposes. As the Korean community in the Philippines continued to grow, they brought with them their own culture, with businesses catering to Koreans also increasing. Meanwhile, Hallyu or the Korean wave has been spreading like wildfire all over the world since it first became popular in China in the early 2000s, and the Philippines is one of the countries where Korean culture has become popular. Eventually, the Korean community in the Philippines, in one way or …

Pensar El Límite: El Símbolo Indígena En Los Proyectos Políticos Cubanos De Principios Del Siglo Xix, Jorge L. Camacho 2022 University of South Carolina-Columbia

Pensar El Límite: El Símbolo Indígena En Los Proyectos Políticos Cubanos De Principios Del Siglo Xix, Jorge L. Camacho

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

This article investigates the way in which Cuban literature reflected on indigenous people during the early half of the nineteenth century and uses the symbol of the Amerindians to demonstrate a moral disjuncture between them and the colonizer. In this article, I call attention to the way Cuban independentists and Spanish nationalists used this figure to support their views and thus created a split in the Cuban creole imagination. I start by pointing out that these appropriations started at the end of the 18th century when historian José Martín Félix de Arrate, and poets such as Miguel González and Manuel …

A Sonogram Of The Dark Side Of The Dao: The Possibility Of Antinatalism In Daoism, Robbert ZANDBERGEN 2021 San Jose State University

A Sonogram Of The Dark Side Of The Dao: The Possibility Of Antinatalism In Daoism, Robbert Zandbergen

Comparative Philosophy

In the present work I study Daoist philosophy in conjunction with the radical new philosophy of antinatalism, spearheaded by South African philosopher David Benatar. Although I am not claiming equivalence between the two, a meaningful communication emerges between the classical Chinese sources used here and the modern doctrine of antinatalism. I argue that both visions partake in a radical critique of consciousness according to which this faculty of the human mind is far from what it is often held to be. In fact, it is perceived as a destructive and disruptive element of, and in, existence. Moreover, both offer a …

The Yi-Jing Cosmic Model As A Framework For Comparative Philosophy, Harry DONKERS 2021 San Jose State University

The Yi-Jing Cosmic Model As A Framework For Comparative Philosophy, Harry Donkers

Comparative Philosophy

Based on the symbolism of the trigrams, the Yi-Jing cosmic model offers possibilities in a coordinate system with eight octants to discuss different philosophical developments in parallel. It forms a framework for further elaboration of theory and methodology of comparative philosophy. This paper is restricted to extracting, analyzing and comparing common features from the perspectives of the Yi-Jing model. Achieving harmony is the subject of a new paper under construction. The philosophical developments in the quadrants, Naturalism, Moralism, Rationalism and Humanism, are characterized by a fundamental difference between subject and object. This difference remains intact in the octants, but specified …

Picturing A Storm Center In The Far East: Geopolitical Image And Representation Of Korea In Early American Newspaper Visuals, Jihyung Kim 2021 The University of San Francisco

Picturing A Storm Center In The Far East: Geopolitical Image And Representation Of Korea In Early American Newspaper Visuals, Jihyung Kim

Master's Projects and Capstones

This Capstone Project explores the image and representation of Korea in early modern American newspaper visuals during the period when Korea and the U.S. first began to engage in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The American newspaper visuals, which interact with headlines, captions, and texts, are represented with specific patterns and features in close links to the newspaper's geopolitical discourse production, specifically the “Far Eastern Question,” which was produced by western powers and Japan. The visuals were intended to show Korea as a dangerous and uncivilized place, “a storm center in the Far East.” Such geopolitical visuals in …

Mosque Architecture And Identity: A Study Of The Autochthonous Mosque In China, Yutong Ma 2021 Washington University in St. Louis

Mosque Architecture And Identity: A Study Of The Autochthonous Mosque In China, Yutong Ma

Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations

This thesis argues that an autochthonous mosque architecture exists in China, and this historical type adequately serves as a reference for contemporary mosque building in southeastern China in light of how it responded to the Chinese cultural and urban contexts. Many Hui Muslims and architects in this region refuse to consider historical mosque architecture built in traditional Chinese architectural style as their cultural references in constructing new mosques, as they believe that the traditional Chinese architectural language is insufficient to express their identity as Muslims. Instead, they prefer a collection of symbolic architectural elements to be used in mosque architecture …

The Dark Realism Of Miyazawa Kenji: Social Activism In The Science-Fiction Children's Story, The Life Of Gusukō Budori, And Its Precursor Work, Elsiemae Ann Ito

Dissertations and Theses

Miyazawa Kenji (1896-1933) is widely known in Japan as a children's story writer and poet, but he was also grounded in real life as a teacher, soil scientist, and farmer. Recognizing the harsh realities for farmers in his native Iwate, he nonetheless dreamed of an ideal world, as seen in his stories. To better understand the dark realities of life in Iwate, Japan, Miyazawa changed his occupation from teacher to farmer, focusing more on social activism that would better the lives of the people in his community. His late children's story, The Life of Gusukō Budori (Gusukō Budori no …

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

As digital technology improves each passing day, knowledge transmission and learning methods are changing too. Gone are the days of using pen and paper as the main means for teaching and learning, and it is common to teach a target language using online learning resources, especially during the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML) and whole-brain learning, using online learning resources assisted instruction can produce better learning outcomes, so it is appropriate for teachers of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages (TCSOL) to use such resources. To that end, it firstly introduces a questionnaire survey conducted among Chinese language learners in Barcelona, Spain, focusing on their viewing habits related to YouTube Chinese-learning videos. The results of the survey not only reveal the students’ preferences for certain types of video content/formats, but also indicate that they make only very limited use of YouTube resources to supplement their formal language education. …

The Case For Pinyin: A Suggestion, Stephen Krashen 2021 Cleveland State University

The Case For Pinyin: A Suggestion, Stephen Krashen

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

I present the following hypotheses: Providing students with comprehensible and interesting reading material in pinyin will result in improved acquisition of oral/aural Mandarin. This additional competence in Mandarin will make texts written in Hanzi more predictable and easier to understand, resulting in improved acquisition of Hanzi. If these predictions are confirmed, it means more rapid acquisition of Mandarin and more efficient acquisition of characters.

This English version of 吾輩は猫である (Wagahai-wa neko de aru: I Am a Cat), Chapters I and II, written by Natsume Sōseki, pseudonym of Natsume Kinnosuke (1867–1916), and translated by Kan-ichi Ando (1878-1924), was published by Hattori Shoten, Tokyo, in 1906.

The Future Of Taiwan, Gillian Hodge 2021 University of Rhode Island

The Future Of Taiwan, Gillian Hodge

Senior Honors Projects

In American media, Taiwan has been referred to as the potential flashpoint for the next world war. Much quantitative research has been done regarding political views and predictions for Taiwan’s future. Based on previous studies, this essay seeks to build more knowledge on public perceptions of the Taiwan independence conflict among individuals on either side of the Taiwan Strait through interview-based research methods. To do this, I interviewed five individuals born in mainland China and five individuals born in Taiwan to compare how they view issues surrounding the China- Taiwan relationship and Taiwan's political status. My central research question looks …

漢藏語言研究對漢語研究的啓示 : 音類、音值及演化生態, Feng WANG 2021 北京大學中文系

漢藏語言研究對漢語研究的啓示 : 音類、音值及演化生態, Feng Wang

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Based on previous studies on Sino-Tibetan languages (mostly, the Bai language) by the author, this paper tends to provide some cues for studies on Chinese. The genetic structure of Sino-Tibetan languages offers the general background. Either Sino-Tibetan comparison or Chinese studies, may need a sustainable hypothesis. Either cognates or loanwords should be clearly identified with substantial evidence. Phonological categories, especially those of protolanguages, should be derived from sound correspondences, such as, the correspondences in the Bai language to Chinese departure tone and entering tone. The reconstruction of phonetic value may update with the advance of modern phonetics. For instance, …
