Theorizing Typography: Printing, Page Design, And The Study Of Free Verse, Carol Ann Johnston 2010 Dickinson College

Theorizing Typography: Printing, Page Design, And The Study Of Free Verse, Carol Ann Johnston

Faculty and Staff Publications By Year

When I first took my introductory poetry workshop to the print shop at Dickinson College, I hoped to engage the bodies as well as the minds of the beginning poets. Setting lead type, choosing paper by weight and texture, mixing an ink color, deciding upon the arrangement of a poem on the page, then turning the press over to ink the type and make an impression that ratifies all those decisions, adds another aesthetic dimension to poetry. I have come more and more to believe this aesthetic dimension is crucially absent in the way many if not most poets have ...

Who Is It That Writes? Poetry And The Plural Self, Christopher Karl Konrad 2010 Edith Cowan University

Who Is It That Writes? Poetry And The Plural Self, Christopher Karl Konrad

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

‘Who is it that writes?’ is the central question of this thesis, which consists of a creative and a critical component. The creative work “Letters to Mark” is an attempt to address the questions, as similarly formulated by the poet Fernando Pessoa; who, really, am I? How many am I and, who is it that writes? It is a profoundly personal work, the origins of which reach back to my earliest days when I was first arrested by Nietzsche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra. I have always wanted to ‘answer’ Zarathustra, that is, respond stylistically and address some of Nietzsche’s ...

My Dolly, Derek Nikitas 2009 Eastern Kentucky University

My Dolly, Derek Nikitas

Derek Nikitas

It was high time for me to fetch frozen Dolly from the butcher shop, but even in an ambulance the drive was rough, it being the Apocalypse out. This girl was too young to be called Dolly, just a teenager, but I named her Dolly because I liked the Golden Oldies, grassroots sheen of it. See, Dolly was dead, and along with the rest of her scrubbed memory, she lost what ever dull moniker her parents had imposed on her. It would be a new dawn for Dolly when I came to her rescue.
