Before the beginning of written literature, the stories told by people known for their wisdom and intellect in their villages were passed from generation to generation by word of mouth.

However, as time went by and the tellers of Eritrean folklore passed away and the rest of society became nonchalant, the meaning and pleasurable messages started to fade away from the memory of society. The infamous slamming door at the end of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House has been controversial from its beginning, leaving audiences with uncertainties about the meaning of family, morality, and personal responsibility. Written in 1879 when the “women’s issue” was still a relatively new subject, the play was met with criticism for its radical female protagonist and her decision to abandon her marriage. In a society where a woman’s primary role was one of domesticity and subservience to her husband, the ending of A Doll’s House was disquieting to audiences. While much has been written and theorized about translation, until recent years, considerably less attention has been paid to the product and process of self-translation, and self-translation studies has only recently emerged as a new and growing field of interest in academia. In my dissertation, I analyze the extent to which literal, linguistic loss in translation leads to figurative gain in the self-translated work and non-authorial translations of three translingual Franco-Anglophone authors: Samuel Beckett, Julien Green, and Nancy Huston. The focus of this study in comparative criticism is a close analysis of Dostoevsky’s first literary publication - his 1844 translation of the first edition of Balzac’s Eugе́nie Grandet (1834) and the stylistic choices that he made as a young writer while working on Balzac’s novel. Through the prism of close reading this dissertation analyzes Dostoevsky’s literary debut in the context of his future mature aesthetic style and poetics. Comparing the original and the translation side by side, the dissertation focuses on the omissions, additions and substitutions that Dostoevsky brought into the text. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Emily Dickinson’s poetry appeared in Italy in two key forms: anthologized alongside other American authors and in select translations by prominent Italian intellectuals including poet Eugenio Montale and writer Emilio Cecchi. Dickinson was both touted as one of the great American writers, but also kept as somewhat of an underground poet who spoke to a specific literary identity in Italy. The cross-hairs of history brought together increased knowledge of Dickinson’s poetry just as Mussolini and his fascist agenda threatened the influence of literature whether homegrown or international. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีและแนวทางการแปลคำสร้างใหม่จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยในวรรณกรรมเยาวชนชุดแฮร์รี่ พอตเตอร์ ประพันธ์โดยเจ.เค. โรว์ลิ่ง และศึกษาเปรียบเทียบคำแปลคำสร้างใหม่ที่พบในฉบับแปลของสุมาลี บำรุงสุข วลีพร หวังซื่อกุล และงามพรรณ เวชชาชีวะ รวมถึงศึกษาลักษณะและแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์คำสร้างใหม่ในวรรณกรรมชุดนี้ ผู้วิจัยใช้แนวคิดเรื่องการสร้างและการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์กเป็นเกณฑ์ในการคัดสรรรวบรวมคำสร้างใหม่ จัดแบ่งประเภทคำสร้างใหม่ในต้นฉบับ และเป็นแนวทางในการวิเคราะห์คำแปล คำสร้างใหม่ในฉบับแปล ควบคู่ไปกับแนวทางการสร้างคำในภาษาไทย แนวคิดสมมูลภาพในการแปล แนวคิดบริบทในการแปล และแนวคิดเรื่องลักษณะของวรรณกรรมเยาวชนแนวแฟนตาซี ผลการวิจัยพบว่าคำสร้างใหม่ในต้นฉบับมี 5 ประเภทคือ คำเดิมที่สื่อความหมายใหม่ คำที่ร้อยเรียงขึ้นมาใหม่ คำที่แปรมาจากรากคำอื่นรวมทั้งการสนธิคำ คำปรากฏร่วมใหม่ และคำสร้างใหม่จากอักษรย่อ และพบกลวิธีการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ในฉบับแปล 6 กลวิธีคือ การทับศัพท์ การแปลตรงตัว การแปลตรงตัวประกอบทับศัพท์ การแปลตรงตัวประกอบตีความ การแปลตรงตัวและใช้อักษรย่อตามคำแปล และการตีความและ สรุปเก็บใจความ ในการเปรียบเทียบกลวิธีการแปลของนักแปลพบว่านักแปลใช้ทุกกลวิธีในการแปล คำสร้างใหม่ไปในทิศทางเดียวกันโดยพิจารณาจากลักษณะเด่นในองค์ประกอบของคำควบคู่ไปกับการพิจารณาบริบท และในการแปลคำสร้างใหม่แต่ละประเภท นักแปลใช้กลวิธีในการแปลที่หลากหลายโดยจะมีอย่างน้อยหนึ่งกลวิธีที่นักแปลใช้เหมือนกัน นอกจากนั้นเป็นการใช้กลวิธีที่เหมือนกันระหว่างสุมาลีกับวลีพร และ สุมาลีกับงามพรรณ เนื่องมาจากพบคำสร้างใหม่ในฉบับแปลของสุมาลีมากที่สุด

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาแนวทางการแปลข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามในนวนิยายชุด A Series of Unfortunate Events เขียนโดย Lemony Snicket แปลโดย อาริตา พงศ์ธรานนท์ โดยศึกษาจากข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามที่มี 4 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) การอธิบายความหมายแบบตรงตัว 2) การอธิบายความหมายตามสถานการณ์ 3) การอธิบายความหมายด้วยการใช้ความหมายมากกว่าหนึ่งความหมาย และ 4) การอธิบายด้วยการหลากคำหรือการใช้คำที่ง่ายกว่าหรือซับซ้อนน้อยกว่า ทฤษฎีและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องที่ใช้ประกอบการศึกษา ได้แก่ ทฤษฎีวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์ของ Christiane Nord ทฤษฎี Scene-and-frame Semantics ของ Charles J. Fillmore และแนวทางการแปลแบบตีความ (Interpretative Approach) ของ Jean Delisle โดยผู้วิจัยใช้ทฤษฎีดังกล่าวในการวิเคราะห์แนวทางการแปลข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามว่าผู้แปลใช้วิธีการใดในการเลือกแปลข้อความลักษณะดังกล่าว หลังจากที่ได้นำทฤษฎีดังกล่าวข้างต้นมาวิเคราะห์แนวทางการแปลพบว่า ผู้แปลจำเป็นต้องวิเคราะห์ภาพ (Scene) ของต้นฉบับเพื่อให้เห็นภาพและความหมายที่ชัดเจนตามที่ผู้ประพันธ์ต้องการสื่อสาร ก่อนถ่ายทอดฉบับแปลโดยใช้รูปแบบ (Frame) ที่ทำให้เห็นภาพเช่นเดียวกันกับต้นฉบับ ซึ่งในการแปลข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามทั้ง 4 รูปแบบ บางครั้งผู้แปลไม่สามารถแปลตรงตัวได้ จึงจำเป็นต้องปรับรูปแบบทางภาษาให้แตกต่างจากต้นฉบับโดยยึดความหมายเป็นหลักเพื่อให้ผู้อ่านฉบับแปลเห็นภาพเช่นเดียวกับผู้อ่านต้นฉบับ กรณีที่ผู้แปลไม่สามารถแปลแบบตรงตัวได้ ผู้แปลจึงใช้วิธีอื่นในการแก้ปัญหาการแปล เช่น การแปลโดยการอธิบายขยายความ หรือการเลือกที่จะตัดเนื้อความบางส่วนเพื่อให้ข้อความที่มีลักษณะการให้คำนิยามเป็นเหตุเป็นผลในภาษาไทย

การถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาในนวนิยายเรื่อง Days Without End ของ เซบาสเตียน แบร์รี่, ณัฐกรณ์ อังสิริเสณี

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นด้วยวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะของวัจนลีลา วิเคราะห์ปัญหา การแปล รวมถึงแก้ปัญหาโดยการหาแนวทางการแปล เพื่อถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาในนวนิยายอิงประวัติศาสตร์เรื่อง Days Without End ของเซบาสเตียน แบร์รี อันไม่เป็นไปตามขนบการประพันธ์นวนิยายบางส่วน ให้ได้บทแปลที่ทำหน้าที่ทั้งสื่อความหมาย และให้อรรถรสแก่ผู้อ่านได้ใกล้เคียงกับต้นฉบับ การถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาเริ่มจากการศึกษาแนวคิดและระเบียบวิธีที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการศึกษาวัจนลีลาประเภทต่าง ๆ ได้แก่ ทฤษฎีวัจนลีลา ของ พอล ซิมป์สัน (Paul Simpson) ทฤษฎีวัจนลีลาเชิงวจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์ ของ เอลิซาเบธ แบล็ค (Elizabeth Black) และแนวทางการแปลวัจนลีลา ของ ฌ็อง โบส-ไบเออร์ (Jean Boase-Beier) รวมถึงลักษณะการประกอบสร้างทางภาษาเพื่อสร้างความ โดดเด่นให้กับวัจนลีลา และผลงานด้านการแปลวัจนลีลาที่มีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกันอันปรากฎในวรรณกรรมเรื่องอื่น หลังจากที่ผู้วิจัยได้รวบรวมแนวคิด ระเบียบวิธี และทฤษฎีข้างต้นแล้วนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์และการแปลเพื่อถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลา พบว่าความรู้ที่ได้จากการศึกษาเหล่านั้นสามารถช่วยแก้ปัญหาการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาจากภาษาของต้นฉบับให้เป็นภาษาปลายทางได้เป็นผลสาเร็จ อย่างไรก็ตาม ยังต้องอาศัยองค์ประกอบด้านความรู้ทางประวัติศาสตร์และบริบททางสังคมที่เป็นฉากหลังของ นวนิยายอย่างละเอียดลึกซึ้ง เพื่อช่วยในการทำความเข้าใจเนื้อหาและสารของผู้ประพันธ์อันสะท้อนผ่านวัจนลีลาเหล่านั้นให้ได้ดียิ่งขึ้น

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการแปลประโยคเคล็ฟต์ที่ใช้สรรพนาม ‘it’ ประเภท Dummy subject ในตัวบทนวนิยาย จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย และเพื่อประมวลกลวิธีการแปลจากกรณีศึกษาเรื่อง The Murder of Roger Ackroyd ของอกาธา คริสตี้ และหนังสือแปลเรื่อง คดีฆาตกรรมโรเจอร์ แอ็กครอยด์ โดยพิรุณรัตน์ เนื่องจากภาษาไทยไม่มีโครงสร้างประโยคที่เทียบเท่ากันทางความหมายกับโครงสร้างประโยคเคล็ฟต์ จึงอาจเป็นปัญหาการแปลที่สำคัญได้ งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งเน้นที่ประโยคเคล็ฟต์ที่ใช้สรรพนาม ‘it’ ประเภท Dummy subject จานวน 63 ประโยค และกลวิธีการแปลสองระดับ ได้แก่ ระดับโครงสร้างประโยคและระดับคำ ผลการวิเคราะห์เชิงปริมาณสรุปได้ว่า กลวิธีการแปลระดับโครงสร้างประโยคใช้การปรับโครงสร้างประโยคใหม่จำนวน 60 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 95.24 และใช้การรักษาโครงสร้างประโยคตามต้นฉบับจำนวน 3 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 4.76 ในการปรับโครงสร้างประโยคใหม่พบว่าผู้แปลใช้การหาประธาน หรือการปรับส่วนใด ส่วนหนึ่งของประโยคเป็นประธานมากที่สุด จำนวน 44 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 73.33 รองลงมาได้แก่การเปลี่ยนประโยคเป็นวลี ส่วนกลวิธีการแปลระดับคำใช้การเติมคำเน้นมากที่สุด จำนวน 17 ครั้ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 26.98 รองลงมาได้แก่การเติมลักษณนาม ผลการวิเคราะห์เชิงคุณภาพสรุปได้ว่า การแปลประโยคเคล็ฟต์ในนวนิยายเรื่องนี้ นักแปลใช้กลวิธี การปรับบทแปลระดับโครงสร้างประโยคและระดับคำร่วมกัน โดยไม่รักษารูปแบบโครงสร้างประโยคเคล็ฟต์เสมอไป แต่ยังคงรักษาหน้าที่และเจตนาในการสื่อสารของโครงสร้างประโยคเคล็ฟต์ ซึ่งสะท้อนให้เห็นแนวทาง การแปลที่นักแปลอาศัยการตีความและทำความเข้าใจความหมายโดยนัยที่สื่อผ่านการใช้ประโยคเคล็ฟต์เป็นหลักก่อน แล้วจึงถ่ายทอดความหมายนั้นเป็นภาษาปลายทางอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ สอดคล้องกับแนวทางการแปลแบบตีความที่เดอลีลส์ (1988) นำเสนอ ทฤษฎี Skopostheorie ที่ไร้ส์และแฟร์เมียร์ (1984) นำเสนอ และทฤษฎีวัจนกรรมที่เฮอนิกช์และคุสเมาล์ (1982) นำมาใช้ในการแปล

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาแนวทางการแปลตัวบทในพิพิธภัณฑ์ และแปลตัวบทต้นฉบับบางส่วนในพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อการศึกษาวัดหนังราชวรวิหาร โดยผู้วิจัยเลือกแปลป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์บรรยายวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดงของพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อการศึกษาวัดหนังราชวรวิหาร รวมทั้งหมด ๑๙๗ ป้าย คือป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์บริเวณชั้น ๑ ของนิทรรศการจัดแสดงเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับวิถีชีวิตชาวสวนของชุมชนวัดหนังในอดีต และป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์บริเวณชั้น ๒ ของนิทรรศการซึ่งจัดแสดงเรื่องยาแผนโบราณของวัดหนัง ผลการศึกษา พบว่าการแปลป้ายแสดงคำบรรยายวัตถุที่จัดแสดงในพิพิธภัณฑ์ นอกจากจะต้องพิจารณาเลือกใช้คำศัพท์ที่เหมาะสมกับกลุ่มผู้อ่านในวัฒนธรรมปลายทางแล้ว ยังต้องพิจารณาวัตถุที่นำมา จัดแสดงประกอบด้วย เนื่องจากวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดงบางชิ้นแม้จะมีชื่อเรียกเหมือนกับคำในวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง แต่ลักษณะเฉพาะของวัตถุชิ้นนั้นไม่เหมือนกับวัตถุในวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง และวัตถุที่นำมา จัดแสดงบางชิ้นไม่พบในวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง โดยผู้วิจัยพบว่าการใช้แนวทางในการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทต้นฉบับ ของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด ทฤษฎีของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์ก ทฤษฎีหลากรูปแบบ ทฤษฎีเกี่ยวกับการแปลพิพิธภัณฑ์ (Museum Translation) และความรู้เกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแปลพิพิธภัณฑ์ สามารถนำมาใช้ในการศึกษาตัวบทและวิเคราะห์ปัญหาที่พบในการแปลป้ายของพิพิธภัณฑ์เพื่อวัดหนังฯ นำไปสู่แนวทางการแปลป้ายพิพิธภัณฑ์ซึ่งผู้วิจัยจึงจำเป็นต้องมีการปรับเปลี่ยนคำศัพท์ และโครงสร้างประโยคในภาษาปลายทางที่ใช้ในการแปลใหม่ เพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดง และจะสามารถทำให้ผู้อ่านได้รับความเข้าใจที่ถูกต้องมากที่สุด

The critical origin story for early modern English stage tragicomedy has frequently centered around Italian playwright and theorist Giambattista Guarini, who offered a tragicomic model in his play Il pastor fido (The Faithful Shepherd) and in his treatises on the genre.
