Translating And Literary Agenting Anna Holmwood’S Legends Of The Condor Heroes, Hong DIAO 2021 Lingnan University

Translating And Literary Agenting Anna Holmwood’S Legends Of The Condor Heroes, Hong Diao

Lingnan Theses and Dissertations

The role of literary agents in translation is intriguing yet under-researched. The mechanism of literary agenting vis-à-vis the initiation, production, and promotion of translated literature is under-explored. How literary agenting affects translation epistemologically, aesthetically, and technically remains uncharted territory. This dissertation attempts to fill the gap by investigating how Anna Holmwood, a translator-cum-literary agent, conceives and conducts the English translation of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan (“射雕英雄傳”), a wuxia (武俠) magnum opus by Jin Yong (金庸).

It first employs an NVivo-based theme analysis to unearth how the translation has been received and perceived by general readers. Next, it develops the notion of …

Issues In Translating Tarifit Tales, Hanan Bennoudi

Dirassat

Oral literature is a sold as man; it has existed in the Amazigh language for many centuries. Among the innumerable genres of oral literature, folktales( Tinfasin Tarifit) remain the most important because they have played an important role in touching the heart of our collective being and permitted to people, young and old, to shift beyond the boundaries of reality. However, Tarifit tales have remained terrain cognita to this day because they were shutdown and stuffed in the family and village context.

Pour Une Littérature Critique, Warren Motte 2021 University of Colorado, Boulder

Pour Une Littérature Critique, Warren Motte

Zea E-Books Collection

A Moment Of Sanity: Ciceronian Rhetoric In Don Quijote's Arms And Letters Speech, Trevor Mathews 2021 Brigham Young University

A Moment Of Sanity: Ciceronian Rhetoric In Don Quijote's Arms And Letters Speech, Trevor Mathews

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In chapters 37 and 38 of the Quijote, Don Quijote gives a discourse to his acquaintances at the inn on the superiority of arms to letters. After the speech, his audience at the inn are dumbfounded that someone so insane could give such a convincing speech, and many believed him to be sane for his presentation. This questioning of his insanity is due, in part, to his use of classical forensic structure and Ciceronian style in the speech. Cervantes certainly grants respect to Cicero within the Quijote and frames the arms and letters speech after Cicero’s forensic speeches. The speech’s …

Cold War Reckonings: Authoritarianism And The Genres Of Decolonization, Jini Kim Watson 2021 Fordham University

Cold War Reckonings: Authoritarianism And The Genres Of Decolonization, Jini Kim Watson

Literature

How did the Cold War shape culture and political power in decolonizing countries and give rise to authoritarian regimes in the so-called free world? Cold War Reckonings tells a new story about the Cold War and the global shift from colonialism to independent nation-states. Assembling a body of transpacific cultural works that speak to this historical conjuncture, Jini Kim Watson reveals autocracy to be not a deficient form of liberal democracy, but rather the result of Cold War entanglements with decolonization.

Focusing on East and Southeast Asia, the book scrutinizes cultural texts ranging from dissident poetry, fiction, and writers’ conference …

Eco-Narratology And Contemporary American Fiction, Kyle Henrichs 2021 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Eco-Narratology And Contemporary American Fiction, Kyle Henrichs

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I analyze contemporary American novels via ecocritical and narratological reading strategies to highlight how novelists approach environmental crises through various narrative strategies. The novels I analyze allow me to provide several instances where contemporary American novelists explore environmental crisis with narrative. I argue that the formal, structural choices contemporary American novelists make depend on the environmental problems they portray. Furthermore, I argue that each novel uses, to one degree or another, realist aesthetics—but makes a marked departure from realism to address environmental concerns. These novels show us how we got to where we are environmentally, but they …

Interactive Translation In Cyberspace : Translator-Reader Dynamics In Online Translation Of Children’S Novels, Xuemei Chen

Lingnan Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates a new mode of online literary translation characterized by translator-reader interactions. Its focus is on Internet-mediated exchanges between a non-professional translator Xiao Mao and his readers in the production, dissemination, and reception of his online translations of three novels by E. B. White from 2000 to 2001. By employing the methodological framework of actor-network theory (ANT), this thesis sets out to unearth not only the interactive dynamics among heterogeneous (human and non-human) actors but also how these engagements shape the translations at different stages.

This thesis first unravels how readers in the New Threads online community participated …

Ke DENG 2021 Lingnan University

Ke Deng

Lingnan Theses and Dissertations
