Absence Is Presence With Distance, James Bayard 2017 CUNY Hunter College

Absence Is Presence With Distance, James Bayard

Theses and Dissertations

Prompting obvious considerations for freedom and nationalism, language and race, time, and decay, the work asks not only what it means to be an American today, but also, more broadly, what it means to be human—to breathe and act, to live and die.

Perspective, Karie D. Cooper 2017 University of New Orleans

Perspective, Karie D. Cooper

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

As an artist, I am interested in understanding how and why humans interact with the natural world. I examine my own individual behaviors and practices and research impacts made on nature by humans as a whole. I am drawn to nature for a multitude of reasons, including aesthetic beauty, psychological wellness, unraveling the mysteries of the universe and trying to understand the origins of life. As an artist I explore the dialectic relationship between everything we perceive outside of ourselves as the environment, and the way we think of ourselves in relation to that environment. I believe in the interconnectedness …

Ten-Der-Ness, Brittany Jasin 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

Ten-Der-Ness, Brittany Jasin

Graduate School of Art Theses

Ten-der-ness. The title of this document defines the word, because one can easily forget all the meanings of a word. To be tender is to be compassionate and kind but also can mean to be in pain. “The quality of being easy to cut or chew” is my favorite definition; because to me that says that to be tender makes you vulnerable to being swallowed by reality. It’s a common saying that without suffering we would never know compassion but, within tenderness, compassion and suffering exist simultaneously in a ten letter word. Within my thesis I am exploring tenderness through …

My City Limits, Maggie Tarr 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

My City Limits, Maggie Tarr

Graduate School of Art Theses

Many have taken part in the act of flanerie,[1] however, many have fallen victim to the flaneur; “the flaneur is the man who indulges in flanerie…”[2]. I am perpetually followed by the male gaze. I am a flaneuse, a surveyor of my surroundings at all times. “Outsider/insider is a border the flaneuse must skirmish on constantly, if only with herself.”[3]

This thesis is a first hand account of my negative experiences that are generated by the many flaneurs of sexualized culture and lustful society. It is an analysis of the paintings I have created as …

The Process That Eats Itself, Brent Houzenga 2017 University of New Orleans

The Process That Eats Itself, Brent Houzenga

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Chance and the found object set the stage for artworks that illustrate the clash between the everyman, popular culture and high art. The investigation of my process, surroundings and interests leads to an infinite amount of possibilities in a process that is beginning to eat itself.

Beginner's Mind, Martin L. Benson 2017 University of New Orleans, New Orleans

Beginner's Mind, Martin L. Benson

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

My art distills my relationship to spirituality, digital culture, and the practices and side-effects therein, into a simplified visual language. The work manifests in the form of paintings, drawings, and light sculptures. Meditation and mindfulness training are a large part of my influence and interests. I often wonder how mindfulness practice can be mirrored in my artwork, not only in my process for creating the work, but also with what the resulting imagery does for the viewer. My intention is to provide an art form that invites one to look and experience one’s own capacity to observe, without the need …

Light On, Baby. No Future, Shane Dollinger 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

Light On, Baby. No Future, Shane Dollinger

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

This project is a realistic depiction of the circularity of experience. As Images of ourselves and our experiences become increasingly inescapable, the repetitive and nonlinear nature of those experiences is amplified. This issue is explored in looking at contemporary artists/filmmakers whose handling of inundation in representation and narrative distinctly embraces multiplicity. Queering structures of representation, the work holds a mirror to the way that we experience living, encountering images, narrative structures and memories.

[Insert Body Here], Katie Yun 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

[Insert Body Here], Katie Yun

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

The personal is political. Using humor and my individual narrative, I illustrate the main three factors that drive my work and relate them to corresponding theoretical frameworks: 1) My OCD tendencies and labor as art concept 2) Assimilation and the appeal of the White Cube 3) Reclamation of identity and Abject art. Through textual and visual research, I provide scholarly backing and precedents set by other artists to situate these personal narratives as part of a larger structural system of oppression, while being transparent of my culpability and participation in these structures. I posit that my work provides a nuanced …

Artist Statement, chaoyi wu 2017 Claremont Graduate University

Artist Statement, Chaoyi Wu

CGU MFA Theses

I make my work to create an experience for the viewer, so that they can have their own experience of their world. Their bodies interact with my pieces to re-recognize themselves and their lives. In this experience their body is independent of everything else but their awareness. Their sense of movement, their vision and their tactile sensations come together into my artwork for them to have their own experience. This is what I call self-body awareness.

Everything, Everything Seemed Once-Upon-A-Time, Denisse Leung Liu 2017 Claremont Graduate University

Everything, Everything Seemed Once-Upon-A-Time, Denisse Leung Liu

CGU MFA Theses

The pleasant feeling of being relaxed is what I want the viewer to feel with my work. The art I make is the source of peacefulness and tranquility I treasure, in a way that there is tranquility and absence of noise, yet it whispers quietly to the viewer.

Hardcore Frivolity, Dixie Lyn Boswell 2017 Claremont Graduate University

Hardcore Frivolity, Dixie Lyn Boswell

CGU MFA Theses

I believe in experiencing the world and truth through all the senses. Digging beneath the surface and not stopping at the first thing that flutters through my head. My art installations work with light, abstract imagery, reflective surfaces, and motion, to manipulate spaces creating multi-sensory experiences that encourage a heightened awareness of being in one's body.

Tony Larson: 2017 Mfa Thesis Exhibition, Tony Larson 2017 Claremont Graduate University

Tony Larson: 2017 Mfa Thesis Exhibition, Tony Larson

CGU MFA Theses

I am interested in altering the modes of communication to which I am subjugated. I am open to participating fully in the world around me, especially in the arms of technology. With every new media channel directed at changing consumer behavior and every new gadget at its dedicated servitude, there are new cracks and chasms to inhabit. These spaces are where new propositions are made. I discover and expand these empty spaces by sticking to a regimented set of processes and self imposed limitations to the way I approach painting. My work proposes that the space of art is uniquely …

Temp Permit, Zhaoyang Zheng 2017 Claremont Graduate University

Temp Permit, Zhaoyang Zheng

CGU MFA Theses

My work focus on the isolation and alienation between society and individual. As an artist, I also regard myself as a tourist, tourists are people who would like to explore and find special things which are not familiar to them. Usually a tourist is isolated from others because of his unfamiliarity with culture and language. It is hard for a tourist to fit into society which is same for artists: they like to explore different and most of the time they are isolated from main stream society.

Letian Luo Thesis Statement, Letian Luo 2017 Claremont Graduate University

Letian Luo Thesis Statement, Letian Luo

CGU MFA Theses

My work started out originating from my dreams, but recently it has moved away from that source. To make the cut outs, I would scribble on the back of a small sheet of scarp paper. Then I discovered that if I cut out the scribble, it become more interesting than the dream work. So I developed the scribbles further. I enlarged them, made them more complex and gestural, and then cut them out, meticulously and with painstaking attentiveness. The process allowed me to draw with knife. I very enjoy the process of me making the cut outs. It got increasingly …

Distraction And Community: The Magic Of Playtime, Heather Alfaro 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

Distraction And Community: The Magic Of Playtime, Heather Alfaro

Graduate School of Art Theses

Experiencing awkward encounters due to an anxious disposition, I create work that fulfills my own needs to fulfill the needs of others. By manipulating environments and providing props and crafted items, I take control of the situation to function within. Using craft, gift-giving and play, I encourage the audience to participate within my work—fostering community by providing an opportunity to play. Being ever fleeting, the encounters with the work and with the other participants distracts to allow the audience to lose themselves. When the work is gone, the memory lives on to comfort, and to inspire.

Black Matter, kahlil Irving 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

Black Matter, Kahlil Irving

Graduate School of Art Theses

History as we know it, is inherited. Racism, fascism, white supremacy, and Eurocentric dominance have been presented as normal and acceptable within our society for many years. This has allowed police officers to execute Black American’s and not be acquitted for their horrendous crimes. As an activist I want to challenge the status quo. As an artist I am interested in investigating how I can present ideas embody or reflect contemporary issues and concerns. Using different colors can aggressively change how an object is perceived. Historical objects hold many important.

I explore many mediums, but an anchor material that I …

Material Poetics, Ellen G. Reid 2017 James Madison University

Material Poetics, Ellen G. Reid

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

quench: /kwen(t)SH/

a : put out, extinguish

b : to put out the light or fire

c : to cool suddenly by immersion

d : to cause to lose heat or warmth

e : to bring to an end typically by satisfying, damping, cooling, or

decreasing

f : to relieve or satisfy with liquid

This is often how projects begin, a haunting idea, word, or experience inundates my consciousness and sub-consciousness. How could the body directly relate to an experience of quenching? This provoked the idea of the extreme sport: freediving. To adequately depict the definition of quenching, any …

Remembering Virtual Worlds: Painting And Video Games, Nathaniel M. St. Amour 2017 James Madison University

Remembering Virtual Worlds: Painting And Video Games, Nathaniel M. St. Amour

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Video games create the feeling of great achievement and place the player into a role that turns them into a great hero. These experiences feel significant because they require great time and emotional investment. The monumentality of these experiences, however, are at odds with the transience of the electrical virtual worlds. The medium of oil painting helps overcome the sense of transience because of oil painting’s durable permanent way of image making and stillness. Painting’s inherent nod to history also creates a dissonance between the newness of the video game medium and the antiquity of painting, a contrast exacerbated by …
