Delicate Target: A Multi-Dimensional Representation Of Woman Using Rip Digital Printing Software To Enlarging Half-Scale To Full-Scale, Ellen Carol Mckinney
Ellen C. McKinney
Inspiration. The author previously investigated the use of flowers in advertisements targeting women. This connection between women and flowers implies that the ideal woman is delicate and beautiful like a flower. The exploration outcome was a gown that made the wearer look like a rose (McKinney, 2006). The current design's purpose was to create a multi-faceted representation of the female target market. The visually strong black and white target side exterior was juxtaposed with a delicate floral side collaged from apparel, makeup, perfume, and jewelry advertisements. The wearer's self-representation may be controlled by how the reversible vest is ...

Matter Under Mind, John F. Lause
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The artist discusses the work for his Masters of Fine Arts exhibition, Mind under Matter, held at the Tipton Gallery in downtown Johnson City, Tennessee. Exhibition dates are from March 27th through April 5th 2017. ‘Matter under Mind’ explores the balance of control and non-control within the art-making process. This technique creates an automatic dialogue resulting in abstraction guided by the subconscious. The title ‘Matter under Mind’ is a slight play on the phrase ‘mind over matter’ emphasizing how matter/material is manipulated by the mind through the making of artwork, and within the mind’s eye or imagination.

Water Being Water, Ronald R. Geibert
IQ. DNA. MRI. FYI. In an ever-changing world, we find ourselves conversing with abbreviated acronyms and phrases. They drive today's economy, political agenda, and water cooler chitchat. They define our use of resources and the attention given to matters. Who we are, or think we are, are wrapped around their brevity. In our hurried attempt to sort through the complexities of life we use them to only answer the obvious-How? Unfortunately, an equally important question, Why? is often ignored. The solving of the how of things has generally been left to the scientists and the reasons as to the ...

“I was always artistically inclined from the time I was small, and I think I was fortunate to have parents who were very supportive of me.” This is how Professor Katherine Behar begins her life story, but she doesn’t claim that her family had no doubts whatsoever. “What I enjoy is doing a lot of different things. This was one of things that my parents were most concerned about, how I was going to find a career where I would be able to do all of the different things that I like doing.”

My goal in my work is to connect to people through stories. I use my characters and narratives to turn people inward towards their own lives; my drawings may remind them of a person, a place, an event, or an experience or emotion. I use ink and Photoshop, which are clear, easy to read, and familiar. This is one way in which my art evokes the feel of comics, cartoons, video games, and other geek-culture influences from my childhood and today. I gravitate most noticeably toward the aesthetic of Japanese manga, applying various elements of this aesthetic to nearly all ...

The Synchretic Network: Linking Music, Narrative, And Emotion In The Video Game Journey, Ivan Mouraviev
Nota Bene: Canadian Undergraduate Journal of Musicology
In the 2012 video game Journey, music is an important component of the playing experience. This study adopts an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on narratology, semiology, and film-sound theory to examine the relationship between music, narrative, and emotion in Journey. After first discussing video games’ interactivity in general, philosopher Dominic Lopes’ theory of digital art is presented as a means of articulating the interactive aspects of Journey’s soundtrack. Theories set out by scholars Jochen Kleres and Michel Chion—which deal with the narrativity of emotions and audiovisual meaning, respectively—are then integrated to produce the “synchretic network”: a theoretical framework ...
