Hackers And The Dark Net: A Look Into Hacking And The Deep Web, Danielle Lefrancois, Christina Reilly, Russell Munn, Andy Strasel, Jess Garcia, Lindsey Chiles

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

The dark web is notorious for the illicit activities it facilitates, including human trafficking, narcotics and weapons sales, and illegally obtained information transfers. In order to combat this constant, invisible threat to security, governments and experts have called for tougher legislation and increased surveillance. But on the opposite end of all this crime and villainy lie persecuted groups who use the dark web and the anonymity it affords to protect themselves from retaliation. This article uses Atavist’s digital storytelling medium to explore how hackers “hack” the web, ethical questions surrounding the dark web, and policy solutions to cyber security.

Nesting Peeps, Sarah Kaplan 2018 Washington University in St. Louis

Nesting Peeps, Sarah Kaplan

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

Nesting Peeps is book depicting a peep character residing in nests of recycled mass digital media. The book images contrast a loving bird, or peep, to a mess of mass media, opinions, arguments, and disrespectful redirect. The peeps and nests relationships focus on presenting the impact of mass digital media on how we engage with one another. Extreme amplifications of particular human social behaviors in a digital space reveal the power of visual imaging in America, and globally, to create divisions as well as broaden our perspectives. This essay further examines the contradictory content of the book Nesting Peeps, and ...

Craft Production And Sociocultural Context: A Case Study Of Nasa Werregue Coiled Basketry In Colombia, Cindy Cordoba Arroyo

LSU Master's Theses

According to the Alliance of Artisan Enterprise from the Aspen Institute, the existence of the artisan enterprise is valuable for native communities since it creates jobs and preserves ancient techniques (Aspen Institute, 2012). The design and development of the Werregue (Astrocaryum Standleyanum) coiled basket is a source of income for indigenous communities in Colombia. This research uses a case study method which employed semi-structured interviews with fifteen skilled Nasa Werregue coiled basketmakers, to analyze the sociocultural characteristics, design, production, and market in Werregue coiled basketry in the Pacific region of Colombia within two research settings, Cali and the village of ...

Safe Haven, Korey Burns 2018 Stephen F. Austin State University

Safe Haven, Korey Burns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Safe Haven is a body of work that reflects my interest in different cultures that have similarities to my personal background. Recreating familiar symbols, colors, textures, and finishes, I create wearable sculptures that communicate memories based upon historic imagery from areas that have impacted my life. By being able to clasp a necklace or pin a brooch on, the viewer physically engages with the work. This interaction resembles my own experiences within the areas I traveled and artists that I have met. With the combination of different metalworking techniques and personal experiences, I am able to developed work that adorns ...

A Shift In Silence, Bailey Idom 2018 Stephen F. Austin State University

A Shift In Silence, Bailey Idom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A Shift in Silence is a body of work that emerged because of a key shift in my life. Using the formal components of line, shape, and value, I create a space representing an intimate moment in time. Physically, the medium can be any material, but I process all of this as an expression of line. Each piece shares the commonality of lines and lineage, while the layering embodies the record of my relationships from the past that directly affect the present. The abstraction and unpredictability within my own relationships require openness and vulnerability. This honest dialogue sustains and informs ...

Lost In Translation, Joanna Bugajska 2018 University of Colorado, Boulder

Lost In Translation, Joanna Bugajska

Art Practices MFA Theses

This thesis contains a detailed visual record of my virtual reality (VR) work entitled “Lost in Translation.” I use 180-degree panoramas to capture the essence of the work. “Lost in Translation” is an attempt to understand better and ultimately accept events from my early teenage years, that after much introspection and therapy, I believe to have negatively impacted much of my adult life. This is a seated VR experience that reflects on themes of identity and place through interaction with objects and various media from the artist’s childhood memories of immigrating from Poland to the United States.
