Commemoration And Protest: The Use Of Heritage Trails To Connect Women's History With Historic Sites, Marissa J. Moshier 2010 University of Pennsylvania

Commemoration And Protest: The Use Of Heritage Trails To Connect Women's History With Historic Sites, Marissa J. Moshier

Theses (Historic Preservation)

Women's heritage trails employ the theme of women’s history to link historic sites across cities or entire states. As shifts in preservation practice have begun to promote greater diversity in the interpretation of historic sites, these trails serve as educational tools and initiatives for heritage tourism that create networks of women’s history sites. The trails also serve as public commemorations of women’s roles in American history and as protests against the absence of women in the interpretation at historic sites. Through case studies in Boston, New Jersey, Maryland, and upstate New York, this thesis considers the ...

An Examination Of The Deteriorative Mechanisms And Enabling Factors At The Wanamaker Memorial Tower In Philadelphia, Katherine Verone 2010 University of Pennsylvania

An Examination Of The Deteriorative Mechanisms And Enabling Factors At The Wanamaker Memorial Tower In Philadelphia, Katherine Verone

Theses (Historic Preservation)

The Wanamaker Tower is in a precarious physical state; as will be demonstrated in this thesis; exterior problems with source moisture control have let to the start of failure of the decorative marble cladding of the interior spaces. The physical conservation problem is compounded by the absence of a constituency or advocacy for stewardship of the tower due to family disinterest and the dissolution of the parish congregation. This thesis will examine the condition of the Tower and the mechanisms of deterioration leading to those conditions. This thesis will also present a conservation plan aimed at addressing the treatment of ...

Alveolar Erosion And Its Conservation Recommendations For The Sandstone Masonry At Durham Castle, Tiffani L. Simple 2010 University of Pennsylvania

Alveolar Erosion And Its Conservation Recommendations For The Sandstone Masonry At Durham Castle, Tiffani L. Simple

Theses (Historic Preservation)

This research addresses the sandstone masonry of Durham Castle, a World Heritage site located in Durham, England. The study encompasses a focus on its current condition, deterioration mechanisms, and in particular, alveolar erosion, and the performance of previous repair techniques. The stone and weathering observed at the castle appear to be consistent across the entire site, regardless of age or location and are representative of other buildings in the area. The obvious diagnosis therefore appears to be related to the geo-chemical nature of the stone more than any other single factor. Alveolar erosion is particularly evident and poses the greatest ...

Preserving The Neighborhood Theatres Of William Harold Lee, Mark Edward Donofrio 2010 University of Pennsylvania

Preserving The Neighborhood Theatres Of William Harold Lee, Mark Edward Donofrio

Theses (Historic Preservation)

The American cinema tradition faces pressures to adapt architecturally, economically, and culturally to the postmodern age as Hollywood-oriented megaplexes, the internet, satellite/cable television, and DVD mail delivery services such as Netflix compete with the communal neighborhood theatre. Consequently, each year numerous historic theatres are either demolished or gutted to provide more commercially viable alternatives, prompting the National Trust for Historic Preservation to designate historic American movie theatres as one of the “11 Most Endangered Places” in 2001. Without concentrated efforts to preserve and to adaptively reuse these endangered movie theatres, many theatre proponents argue that cinematic experience will soon ...

New Neighbors In Old Neighborhoods: Explaining The Role Of Heritage Conservation In Sociocultural Sustainability And Gentrification, Charles William Lawrence 2010 University of Pennsylvania

New Neighbors In Old Neighborhoods: Explaining The Role Of Heritage Conservation In Sociocultural Sustainability And Gentrification, Charles William Lawrence

Theses (Historic Preservation)

Cities are struggling with their deteriorated urban neighborhoods. When reinvestment is promoted and new residents move in to these neighborhoods, some older residents are displaced by rising costs of living. This process is called gentrification. Critics have implicated heritage conservation as a cause of gentrification, stating that conservation programs select an exclusionary historicism separate from an authentic lower-class reality. However, in many cases heritage conservation tools are applied by individuals, communities, not-for-profits, and governments to anchor residents to their neighborhood in the face of gentrification. Several case studies are analyzed to determine how different neighborhoods have experienced gentrification and how ...

Feasibility Study Of Solar Driven Underground Cooling System, Michel E. Shafik 2010 University of Nebraska at Lincoln

Feasibility Study Of Solar Driven Underground Cooling System, Michel E. Shafik

Architectural Engineering -- Dissertations and Student Research

In the United States the peak electrical use occurs during the summer. In addition, the building sector consumes a major portion of the annual electrical energy consumption. One of the main energy consuming components in the building sector is the Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems. This research studies the feasibility of implementing a solar driven underground cooling system that could contribute to reducing building cooling loads. The developed system consists of an Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) coupled with a solar chimney that provides a natural cool draft to the test facility building at the Solar Energy Research Test Facility ...

Human Capital In The City: Exploring The Relationship Between Skill And Productivity In Us Metropolitan Areas, Ryan Wallace 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Human Capital In The City: Exploring The Relationship Between Skill And Productivity In Us Metropolitan Areas, Ryan Wallace

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

In economics, new growth theory suggests that knowledge creation and innovation are key drivers of growth. As a result, the ‘new economy’ is increasingly reliant upon the knowledge, skills, and abilities embodied in its workforce, also known as human capital, that facilitate the stimulation and generation of new ideas (Romer 1986, 1990 and Lucas 1988). This research contributes to the understanding of the relationship between stocks of human capital and economic output. I construct metrics to measure concentrations of basic worker skills using the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Information Network (O*NET) and employment estimates for 353 US metropolitan ...

Reworking: Transforming A Textile Mill, Jennifer M. Hayes 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Reworking: Transforming A Textile Mill, Jennifer M. Hayes

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

This project examines the adaptive reuse of a disused nineteenth century textile mill building in Gilbertville, Massachusetts. While the original form and structure of the building type was conducive to maximum production of goods, contemporary uses require different forms. Although other mills in New England have been reused for housing, museums, or professional offices, my goal was to propose a program that related to the building’s original function as a place where people worked. Because the unemployment rate is rising in Massachusetts in 2010, I propose that the mill be reused as a training center where people learn green ...
