Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Greening An Older Modest-Sized Home, Delilah Zoe Leval 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Greening An Older Modest-Sized Home, Delilah Zoe Leval

Master's Theses

This professional project estimates the upfront costs and utility savings expected from greening an approximately 1,100 square foot home built in the 1950s in the San Francisco Bay Area. Two sets of upgrades (alternative and original) were compared for costs and benefits. The alternative set (which included ceiling insulation and omitted upgrading to dual-pane windows) clearly out performed the original set. The alternative set would be expected to reduce resident utility bills by 28% annually, and to prevent approximately 2,700 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The water efficiency upgrades were the best performing group of upgrades, as ...

Reconnect The Urban Surface --- By Making Landscape And Infrastructure, Ming Gao

Architecture Senior Theses

Today in the post industrial city, the connection between different places relies mostly on transportation by way of automobiles, public buses, and subway. By walking or biking, people are able to talk with nature directly. However, by modern transportation, people are confined in a close machinery space which prevents them from experiencing nature directly. They are separated from nature by consciously choosing to use modern transportation during their daily lives, and they get less and less direct access to nature. Nowadays, nature experienced space within walking distance int he city is limited to the tiny front yard garden, where landscape ...

Architecture Senior Theses

"Neighborhoods with block after block of monolithic homes, which can be seen as far as the eye can see, are constructed by large conglomerate companies whose goal is to create the largest number of homes in the smallest area in order to achieve the largest amount of profit... The question becomes, what can we learn from this intensive use of space and how can it inform a design project that attempts to intensify use of space in the existing footprint of these communities in an intensification of uses that is informed by the informal relationships that already exist."

Form And Meaning, John Jespersen

Kresten Jespersen

As did Owen Jones, Bloomer argues for a modern style of ornament to decorate a modern architechture. Based on formal laws rather than theories of classical or naturalism imitation, conventionalization can be seen as being explicitly modern. More-over, deriving from the work of ornament, these laws are dependent on intrinsic rather than extrinsic principles.

Southern Nevada Agency Partnership Cultural Site Stewardship Program – Program Expansion And Steward Retention: Quarterly Progress Report, Period Ending September 30, 2010, Margaret N. Rees

Cultural Site Stewardship Program

The Cultural Site Stewardship Program is working with the Desert Wildlife Refuge (DWR) in accordance with a request by the Archaeologist for USFWS.

Several classes were offered to stewards, including map and compass orientation, site photography and lithics instructions.

Twenty-three newly trained stewards along with 12 existing stewards were assigned to the Desert Wildlife Research area, and will be introduced to sites during early fall. The Abandoned Mines Lands project operated by the National Park Service will continue with new objectives this fall.

New Code Changes Under The 2009 Ibc, John W. Lawson 2010 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

New Code Changes Under The 2009 Ibc, John W. Lawson

Architectural Engineering

The evolution of building codes typically produce design provisions that are expected to create safer and more accurate designs. We as engineers expect building codes to advance the state of the art with each successive edition. The 2009 International Building Code (IBC) and the Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-08) have significant revisions affecting the design of tilt-up buildings, but in some cases not necessarily advancing the state of the art. For example, the latest ACI 318 edition is largely revising slender wall design back to match equations found in the old 1997 UBC. In addition, the latest ...

Searching For Innovation Through Teaching Digital Fabrication, Timothy Hemsath 2010 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Searching For Innovation Through Teaching Digital Fabrication, Timothy Hemsath

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The use of digital fabrication in the discourse and education of architectural students has become a common skill in many schools of architecture. There is a growing demand for computer-aided design (CAD) skills, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) logic, programming and fabrication knowledge in student education. The relevance of fabrication tools for architecture and design education goes beyond mere competence and can pursue innovation in what Branko Koleravic (2003) observed, “The digital age has radically reconfigured the relationship between conception and production, creating a direct digital link between what can be conceived and what can be built through “file-to-factory” processes of computer ...
