Green Transit Oriented Development And Subtropical Design, Bhishna Bajracharya, Daniel O'Hare, Jason Byrne

Bhishna Bajracharya

Extract: In this chapter we review the historical development of TOD as an idea in Queensland, and discuss its evolution from an incipient 'walkability-oriented' design trend (intended to reduce car dependence, congestion and pollution while bolstering the efficient use of infrastructure and services) to a more holistic concern with environmental quality.

Nurturing Small Firms In The Knowledge-Based Economy: Programs And Challenges, Kay Imukuka, Bhishna Bajracharya, Linda Too, Greg Hearn

Linda Too

This paper aims at providing some insights into how the knowledge-based economy trend has been embraced by Australia’s Queensland State Government, through its signature policy known as the Smart State Strategy. Through significant investments in building new research institutes, upgrading the skills of locals to attracting and retaining knowledge workers and providing support to businesses, the Smart State Strategy has helped position Queensland as an important player in the global knowledge-based economy. A key initiative of the Smart State Strategy involves providing support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are now widely recognised as playing a vital role ...

Full list of publications from School of Architecture

At the center of Slocum Hall, four stories below a large skylight, stands a big shaggy lens - a deep, fur-lined scoop framed by a broad rectangle eight feet high. Between stepped floor and slanted ceiling is a curved wall punctuated by a trapezoidal aperture through which you glimpse a purple-tinted fragment of face. Forehead and cheeks, a nose and two eyes: Marcel Breuer.

The lens, a pavilion encasing deep embrasures, marks an exhibition of material from the archive of this leading 20th century architect. It points you toward the adjacent gallery, where more than 120 drawings and photographs reproduced at ...

¿Fin Al Estacionamiento Gratuito?, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq.

Environmental Problems Of Industrialization And Sustainable Development In Nigeria - A Review, Adejoh Iyaji

Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria

The main objective of this paper is to examine the impact of the quest for industrialization on the environment in Nigeria; others include, the identification of the objectives of sustainable development as well as making recommendations that will lead to the much needed sustainable environment both for the present generation and generations yet unborn. The researcher relied principally on secondary sources of data for this paper which is theoretical in approach.

Illuminating Urban Agriculture: A New Framework For Understanding Complexity, Helena K. Farrell 2011 University of Massachusetts - Amherst

Illuminating Urban Agriculture: A New Framework For Understanding Complexity, Helena K. Farrell

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Masters Projects

Modern, conventional food systems vulnerable to declining fossil fuel resources are a 21st century plight demanding rapid transition to regenerative agricultural practices. Urban agriculture is currently responding; expanding and diversifying from recent and historic roots worldwide to help meet the needs of contemporary urban dwellers and ameliorate the aftereffects of industrial agriculture.

Urban Agriculture is comprised of many different styles, practices, and modes of production. From traditional to state-of-the-art, they result in a range of landscape typologies occurring around the globe. The tremendous variety creates the need for better articulation and more accurate distinctions between actual urban farm systems. In ...

A Virtual Supply Airflow Rate Meter In Rooftop Air Conditioning Units, Daihong Yu 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A Virtual Supply Airflow Rate Meter In Rooftop Air Conditioning Units, Daihong Yu

Architectural Engineering -- Dissertations and Student Research

Virtual sensing technology aims to estimate difficult to measure, expensive, or new quantities by using multifarious mathematical models along with non-invasive and low-cost measurements. Such embedded intelligence is a key to improving the performance of building systems in terms of functionality, safety, energy efficiency, environmental impacts, and costs. Considering the progress that has been achieved over many various fields (e.g., process controls, automobiles, avionics, autonomous robots, telemedicine) within the last two decades, numerous intelligent features have been incorporated and enabled that would otherwise not be possible or economical.

To identify the potential opportunities and research/development needs of virtual ...

Publications (E)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building Technologies Program has set the aggressive goal of producing marketable net-zero energy buildings by 2025. This goal will require collaboration between the DOE laboratories and the building industry. We developed standard or reference energy models for the most common commercial buildings to serve as starting points for energy efficiency research. These models represent fairly realistic buildings and typical construction practices. Fifteen commercial building types and one multifamily residential building were determined by consensus between DOE, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and represent approximately ...

Preserving Urban Landscapes As Public History --- A Qualitative Study Of Kensington Market, Toronto, Na Li 2011 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Preserving Urban Landscapes As Public History --- A Qualitative Study Of Kensington Market, Toronto, Na Li

Open Access Dissertations

Situated within the interpretive and critical traditions, this study aims to contribute to one of the continuing primary themes in urban preservation: how to interpret and preserve the intangible values of built environments. A comprehensive analysis of dominant theories of urban preservation forms the conceptual framework within which this dissertation takes place. It starts by locating the intellectual context of preservation in North America, and examines its basic premises and core issues. It identifies three limits to the traditional approach to preservation planning. The complexity and fragility of history, its narrative quality and its particularities, its emotional content and economic ...

La Metástasis Del Cártel De Sinaloa, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. 2011 FLACSO, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales. Sede Ecuador
